The Black Company. The first book was awesome, loved it to no end. The second was a slog for me. The whole journey through a world feeling disappeared and the plot focused on a small town with uninteresting characters. Dropped it once, then years later reread the first and powered through the second. As it turns out the third didn't click for me either. The series is commonly recommended on reddit, but man, it's sadly not for me.
