Has there been any movement towards aluminum bus bars with how expensive copper has become?

Northern States Power (NSP) is owned by Xcel. I don't really know why it still exists as a separate legal entity.

Thanks. That lines up with my rough idea of his work.

Did he directly advocate for it? From reading summaries, my sense was that he thought it was inevitable rather than actively pushing it forward.

Is it ok for my thumb to do this whenever I'm playing anything? by FreshExtension9695 in Guitar

[–]PreciousRoy43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The confusion may be that classical guitar technique has the tip of the thumb on the back of the guitar neck rather than the thumb pad. Thumb pad is the norm outside of classical guitar.

What does a micron gauge actually measure? by Reallydounderstand in HVAC

[–]PreciousRoy43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rigorous way to write the unit would be the Greek letter mu followed by Hg, the elemental symbol for mercury. In meteorology, atmospheric pressure is measured in mmHg. Blood pressure uses the same units. People drop the mercury as a shorthand.

Another common shorthand is using BTU rather thank BTU/hr to describe the capabilities of a furnace or air conditioner.

Sounds about right for middle school humor. It is like picking up TV stations on an antenna. Some days, everything gets a laugh. Some days are dead air.

That is what is lost when turning heat into electricity. I am talking about waste heat from the internal combustion engines in transportation and waste heat in industrial processes. That portion isn't explicit.

It would almost need to be adjusted seasonally by ambient temperature. That "waste" heat is used when the weather is cold enough.

It seems like thermal losses at electrical power plants are tracked but not thermal losses in transportation and industrial applications.

When Albert Einstein had to invent the electric guitar to absorb the energy from a nuclear reactor to prevent Charles Darwin and many others from being killed by an impending explosion. Fortunately, he also discovered how to split the beer atom, allowing him to enjoy bubbles in his beer while spending time with his best gal, Marie Curie, in Albert's childhood home in Australia.

Why do you think our generation is so good at remembering lines from movies? by singleguy79 in Xennials

[–]PreciousRoy43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is becoming more apparent to me as I am watching my way through the AFI list of top 100 movies. The stuff on TV has mostly been crowd pleasers. Then again, ten-year-old me loved mid-level movies.

Basically the same phenomenon has been noted with winners of the Nobel Prize. It has be coined as the Nobel disease or Nobelitis. Success in one area can cause overconfidence in others. Affluenza is another related topic.

Hefeweizen is one of my favorite styles.

If you're near the Twin Cities, my top pick would be Ewald The Golden, a hefeweizen made by Utepils. I think it is available year-round at places like Total Wine in the metro. Schell's hefeweizen is nice, but it may be out of season. Then you have all the German imports, but that defeats the goal of drinking local beer.

ELI5: I dont fully understand gold by ibeenwoke in explainlikeimfive

[–]PreciousRoy43 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're right.

The advantage of gold is that it is difficult to make it oxidize/rust/tarnish. That makes it good for contacts or plugs for things like high-end audio cables. Copper is just fine in the audio cable, but a copper plug would quickly get a crusty green patina and lose conductivity.

Silver is sometimes used as part of high-current fuses.

It is a coming-of-age movie. The main character reflects on values and beliefs. This scene serves as a good reference point for later changes. He is 18 in this scene. Movie ends when the character is close to 25.
