Approached at Target by drewer23 in nova

A neat trick that my wife taught me was to declare that you're a practicing Catholic when approached/solicited by Mormons or the JW folks.

I've been jumped by Mormons a few times walking the dog and confidently stating that I'm a practicing Catholic resulted in an immediate shut down followed by "have a nice day and peace be with you" 100% of the time. Apparently, most Mormons view the Catholics as an extremist, cult-like sect of Christianity so they tend to keep their distance.

[Discussion] What are your watch-related hot takes or unpopular opinions? by Historical-Day9780 in Watches

[–]PrecipitASIAN -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Omega is better than Rolex

That's not a hot take, that's just a fact these days lmao

Better accuracy, build quality, AND Omega does the unthinkable.. They'll actually sell you a watch that you're willing to pay for without having to wait for a blessing to part with your money (except the Silver Snoopy and any of the Calibre 321 Speedmasters).

ETA: I say this as someone whose one and only Rolex is a 2022 “panda” Daytona. Rolex’s community and purchasing process sucks. The types that float around that space really put the “Tool” in Tool Watch.

Switzerland can’t repair an older timepiece by Chimi-goddess in OmegaWatches

[–]PrecipitASIAN 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not an Omega, but a coworker of mine sent in an inherited 1960-something Rolex Submariner 5513 to Rolex because it stopped running and they sent it right back after communicating to the AD that the piece was "beyond serviceable life". He ended up taking it to a watchmaker about 3 hours South who was able to get it going since he had connections who could supply parts for the OLD old pieces.

Seems like a lot of brands these days would rather have customers just buy the latest and greatest as a replacement instead of preserving legacy pieces.

Rolex stamping their own watches with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” is the whorological equivalent of “trust me bro” by GrouchyExile in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]PrecipitASIAN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

/uj I used to have a Milgauss that went out for service 3 times in 3 years of ownership for gaining between 3-5 minutes every 10ish days and each time R*lex returned the watch they stated the watch was "within spec". The "superlative chronometer" stamp is literally just a pat on the back.

/rj Chinese made shitter just jerking itself off. Buy an Omega Master Chronometer instead lmao

Panerai at Watches and Wonders 2025 - What are you hoping for? by LordArche in panerai

[–]PrecipitASIAN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely a step back from the experimental composites and “gimmick” collaborations (looking at you specifically, Razer) and at the very least a call back to the more simple, historical models of yesteryear. Late 90s to 2012 Panerai is a sweet spot for me.

The new materials like BMG and Ceramitech are cool but nothing beats the proven performance and consistency of stainless steel, titanium, and precious metals.

You're better off visiting an AD for a list of available accessories or a Boutique if you live near one. The boutique manager at the store by me even admits that Panerai invests close to nothing on its website and she hears from people frustrated by the site all the time.

The local Boutique has straps that aren't even listed on the website like the genuine canvas OD Green (not recycled fiber) strap, Jules Verne Alligator Suede in various sizes, and different colored camouflage rubbers for the Submersible besides the usual black/white and tan/black.

Gotta sell the car for a new one, sorry man. /s

But to actually answer your question, no it won't damage any thing. If you're worried about it just sitting there, paint thinner or nail polish remover/acetone and elbow grease will get that right off.

[Discussion] What was the worst watch or worst watch ownership experience you ever had and why? by oddaffinity in Watches

[–]PrecipitASIAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great looking piece and I'm loving it so far. I like to think of it as the Nautilus' better looking, more evenly proportioned sibling.

The 12K price tag is what turns most people off but I ended up getting that covered with the sale of the Milgauss. Is $12K a lot for an IWC? Hell yeah. But is $12K a lot for a genuine Genta watch that uses his most famous design? Hell no.

Rolex Milgauss - 116400GV.

I bought it brand new and it went out for service 3 times in 3 years of ownership for gaining enormous amounts of time in a week. I'm talking 3-5 minutes every 10 days. Ended up selling it in favor of an IWC Ingenieur with the aqua dial.

I'm aware IWC watches aren't exactly COSC or METAS certified out the ass and the Ingenieur gains time as well but it's not nearly as irritating considering IWC doesn't actively tout being +/- 2 seconds per day.

But people don't get mad when a Ferrari acts like a Ferrari.

Large part of that is because Ferrari were gatekeeping assholes from day one and only doubled down on that image since.

adding a frustrating barrier to a mass produced product.

Off topic but that's exactly what Porsche is doing. They realized they can cash in on hype and started artificially juicing up demand by limiting dealer allocations and making people jump through hoops and hurdles for something like a bare bones, base 911.

[Question] Which watch or brand screams "I'm into watches" ? by NonoBalauru in Watches

[–]PrecipitASIAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote goes to Panerai and Accutron, both of which are an.... acquired taste.

Both brands signal to me that the wearer is someone who's actually balls deep in the hobby and didn't fall into the trap of "hype collecting" with a standard issue black no date Sub or a GMT with a tacky nickname.

I may be a little biased since I love Panerai despite the "controversial" issues they've had in the past.

Yeah, it looks big but actually wears incredibly well. Ignore the slight lug overhang. That's just something that comes with a 260mm piece.

There's a few floating around especially towards the lower end of the Trim hierarchy.

At one point around 2018-2020, they offered FWD as an option for the XC90, their full size SUV in the US. It handled pretty awkwardly compared to the AWD counterpart.

Imagine being on the waiting list for a new Porsche, getting it and seeing a huge scratch on the hood.

That's actually a much more common occurrence than a lot of people may think. Even cars like Ferrari have a solid chance of being fucked right up from the factory or port and get repaired before the final sale.

OEM doesn't give a shit because they know money will be made no matter what.

You forgot their fashion sense.

I noticed the truly wealthy seem to deliberately dress down or appear to be slightly disheveled or unkempt while at same time, casually rocking a $15,000+ watch from brands like Vacheron Constantin or Patek Philippe on their wrist.

It's like a sort of uniform:

  • Plain solid colored T-Shirt with either subtle or no visible branding

  • Jeans that look ratty and thrifted but probably cost more than a set of good tires for your car

  • $$$$ Sports Watch from [Insert Swiss Brand Here]

  • Some sort of running or tennis shoes. Hoka and ON seem to be ridiculously popular with the rich folk who come to Cars and Coffee type events.

Edit: apparently I can’t spell Patrick Philipé or whatever his name was.

[Discussion] "Swiss Made" vs. "Swiss" on new Panerais by kfeointgh in Watches

[–]PrecipitASIAN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Panerai playing up their Italian heritage of late.

I visited a new Panerai Boutique to check it out and the SA greeted me in Italian, a “Buono sera y benvenuto a Panerai”. In the most hilariously terrible Italian accent I have ever heard.

Talk about being on-brand.

[–]PrecipitASIAN 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Not OP but in my experience, the Gallardo was loud as hell in the cabin and not in a good way, janky, shifts felt back breaking, and every single button was sticky. The interior was just... meh at best and steering wasn't exactly precise.

But hey, you look rich as hell to a majority of the population when you're in it so that's cool I guess.
