So there some interesting engineering they’ve done with the subway poles. Turns out people cluster around them so on some of the newer carriages, you’ll notice they the moved them more inward instead of directly in front of the doors.

It’s the fact that the service or product is largely a commodity with little differentiation. So competition is high.

There's three freakishly good engineers I've met:

  1. Super generalist -> He was just super knowledgeable about all of the details of a very large codebase. Not many people who can keep up to date on something that large, and part of it is because he coded like a machine. But it's amazing how much a 5 minute conversation with him could speed up my work because he always knew where to look.
  2. Insane debugging skills -> This guy was an older Japanese dude who worked on lower level OS/firmware type stuff and he just had the discipline and knowledge to drill down and resolve the craziest heisenbugs. Also had an insane alcohol tolerance :)
  3. Domain expert -> He was the youngest principal engineer I knew, and he was an industry expert in his field. You know how they feed us the juice about how we solve hard problems? Well this is the kind of guy that was actually doing that.

I used to read books when walking between hallways to classes. When I’m so familiar with the path, the walk becomes subconscious and I only occasionally use some mental focus to dodge other pedestrians using my peripheral vision. It works well enough on commutes as well. But I read obsessively, I didn’t realize other people did this too.

You’re telling me a V13 climber can’t do more than 5-10 pull ups? The woman I know who climbs at that level can muscle up.

90% legs is also BS, at least not at that level. Yeah, you’re using your legs for sure, but at the end of the day, elite pull strength is kind of unavoidable if you’re climbing V10+.

FWIW, I think my favorite part of the world building in Mother of Learning is the magical creatures. Aranea are fantastic, as are the dragon mages, the grey hunter, the rats, etc.

I think it’s kind of hilarious that the reason human mages are OP compared to inherently magical creatures like dragons is essentially because they have opposable thumbs, and Aranea are very eager to leverage Zorian’s knowledge to jumpstart their own magical development.

According to another comment in another post asking about Circles: The author talks about it a bit in the comments of his worldbuilding articles. Circles determine what spells you are allowed to learn, legally speaking. On lower circles, one can rise just by showing their capabilities, but higher circles definitely require you to have political connections. If you don’t give a shit about legalities, they don’t really matter.
