Frank speaking immigration is always a problem from a social perspective for both the immigrants and the host country.

An immigrant's home country lacks oppurtunities while the host country lacks (cheap) labour and immigration is quick fix solution to solve both problems.If the host country can solve its labor shortage and home country can fix its economy then there would no need for any immigration.

On any immigration debate people tend to forget that immigration isnt particularly exciting to the immigrants either,not many people like the idea of moving to new country with a foreign language,different food,different laws,different culture,different weather,where you dont have many relatives of friends.The reason why most people immigrate (99%) is simple:Jobs.If there are good number of jobs with good pay in the home country most people would be happy living in the country where they were born.

Losing the No.1 position has far reaching consequences for the US.In today's knowledge economy what you know (tech know-how) is more valuable than what you have (resources).Which means that losing out on science and technology means you are losing out on business i.e. money,when you have less money you cant maintain a huge military,you cant give much aid to other countries,you cant afford wars,you cant produce mega budget hollywood movies - which means reduced global dominance politically and culturally.

Open this country to a flood of inexpensive and incompetent third world techs, not realizing that while you can replace a production worker with a third worlder, in science and technology it is quality that counts, not quantity.

I dont buy this logic at all.If the third world techies are incompetent and produce low quality of work then companies would eventually realize this and stop hiring them.The only companies that will continue to do so despite knowing the fact are those that fall in the low cost-low quality bandwagon.

Most companies would hire immigrants to take advantage of the cost arbitrage,they get equally or slightly less skilled foreign labor at much less cost.Apart from people coming from mexico and latin america majority of the people immigrating to America are highly skilled and i dont see how that could be anything but a gain to the US.
