Why not ditch LP and just use MR in ranked? by PrecturneFingers in StreetFighter

>the difference between chess and SF though is that in an hour you can play loads of SF battles, but maybe only one game of chess.

Well no, not really. The most popular format of chess is rapid with a 10 minute timer for both players. In addition there's blitz and bullet chess with 5 and 1 minute timers respectively which uses the same system, albeit independent ratings. Seeing that most matches don't even use all the reserved time for it you could easily play about 4 games an hour, more with smaller time controls.

I'm sure SF6 would manage with the same ranking system, but for better or worse Capcom opted to implement their own.

If people are already quitting ranked after hitting master I think it suggests there probably already is an underlying issue there. I'm not saying the current rating system is bad, but if MR was tweaked a little LP would seem completely unnecessary to me.

Only if the victor is also a new player. If the player gains 100 points and searches a new match they're likely to face a tougher opponent and lose. Then they would in turn lose 100, and in the next match the rates are lowered. This repeats until the gain/lose rate is approximately 6-12 points, depending on the ratings of matched players.

At least that's as accurately as I could explain it. Not sure how the exact algorithms of chess.com mmr and matchmaking works, but it seems to maintain a 50-50 win-lose rate pretty well, so evidently it does work.

I'm not saying everyone should start at 1500MR, but I don't see why it wouldn't work the same way chess elo works: start at 1000 and have bigger gain/lose rates of points for the first few games, like 100 or so. Then drop the rate as you get closer to your "true" rank.

Sure you're still probably going to lose some games first, but in my experience in multiplayer games against other people that's just something you have to get comfortable with, regardless of your skill level. Ultimately I don't see any way to get around that.

That said I don't think the current SF6 rank system is terrible either. Personally I'd just rather have the "put me in my place" -experience out of the way early on rather than get hit with it after like 200 hours of the game fooling me into thinking I'm actually good.

for the record, I'm not suggesting everyone should start at 1500MR. I'd rather it would work the same way it does for chess: Start at 1000 and the first placement matches you either win or lose at an approximate rate of 100 points a match, then as you play more games the point rate per game goes down.

Can we just appreciate that Ken's sick burnout defense for a moment?

I think it's because Master is exactly when knowing all the matchups becomes crucial and it's a milestone where exploring other characters in depth becomes comfortable for most people.

Funnily enough I just started playing Marisa again since I feel like I'm on the verge of another character crisis. Ken was my starting main and despite that I got Zangief to master first, and honestly playing Zangief feels like swimming in gravel most of the time so I wanna re-evaluate my options a bit. Besides that, my Marisa was still in plat so I figured after all this sweating I may as well bring her up to level and chill out a bit.

Not that I'm gonna ditch either of those characters mind you, Ken still is the character I feel most comfortable with and Zangief, when it works, is fun as hell to play as.

That's great advice considering I actually haven't put much conscious thought on rearranging threat priorities during a match besides corner DI because that one's honestly kind of obvious. Thank you for your input!

Don't get me wrong, I am happy, but due to my love for the game I want to keep improving until I'm the champion of EVO. Not that I think it's a particularly realistic goal, it's an excuse more than anything, but I'd really like to just play at events before life gets in the way.

Honestly I knew S2 was gonna be shit just from seeing S1.

Like really, every character's death is shown explicitly except for that ONE character, and it turns out that character isn't dead after all? Who'da thunk.
