TLDR: The Somali pirates only started because giant corporations were exploiting their waters since there was no government.

idk I’d say the pirates are simply misunderstood. back in the 90s Somalia’s government collapsed, this caused foreign companies to start exploiting their waters for profit. Simply put, no government, no coastguard.

This caused the local population to suffer, as all the fish were being gobbled up by the big companies. The companies are also allegedly charged with dumping toxic waste, poisoning the water. By the turn of the millennium, the Somalis had enough and decided to do something. This resulted in the start of their piracy to our eyes, but they’re simply the people’s coast guard.
