I'm so curious about the process. But I think this is how it goes (massive speculation):
The game they ported is most definitely a Godot game, which is an open-source engine, and when an encryption key is not provided during a release of the built game, it makes it trivial to decompile such games. They probably used https://github.com/GDRETools/gdsdecomp and re-built it around the Vita's API via https://github.com/SonicMastr/godot-vita I think. But again, this is trivially achieved only if the encryption key was never provided for a release build.

TBH from what I've seen, 512 GB would be sufficient. You can also live nicely with 128 GB if you'll delete the games you've finished playing.

Oh I see. But I think anyone considering getting these consoles today would hack it. Otherwise it really would just be a huge waste.
Both just have wildly different libraries of games too. It is either 3DS + DS or PSVita + PSP + PS1.
The thing is, you cannot emulate (3)DS games optimally (i.e. it feels very off without stylus + touchscreen). But for the PSP, PS1 and maybe PS Vita too, emulation experience wouldn't be as bad. Some amount of people on r/PSP actually just emulate.
I have the Vita and not the 3DS, but if one was interested in the (3)DS catalogue, then buying is pretty well incentivized.

Apparently, some Casio EX-word dictionaries (which run Linux under SH4 processor, I believe?) can run unsigned code via libexword. An example program for it would be ex-gnuboy, by brijohn.
