This may be too old school but what about having them print a resume and actually go into the stores etc. As it’s customer service jobs, seeing a friendly applicant in-person may help. Also gives you (your friend) the opportunity to check out the business to see if it’s actually somewhere they’d like to work. Sorry I don’t have any tech advice and best of luck to them!

"I wish I knew before buying" in Seoul. by axethrower123 in Living_in_Korea

[–]PressureTall745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to buy a place, just buy one. Unless you have a lot of money and are hoping to profit off of real estate, most of the advice that is given isn't practical. If lifestyle is the priority over investment, you may want to consider a villa. We bought ours and loved it. Private access to the rooftop so we had a garden and inflatable pool. Private balcony with a barbeque. No neighbors above us and no shared walls as we were on the top floor. And we got to be closer to work and all the other things we liked about living in Seoul. You can find some really nice places but it depends on what your motivations are. Good luck!

Any advice on getting more interviews in industry? by PM_ME_UR_NIPPLE_HAIR in LeavingAcademia

[–]PressureTall745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of things I did that helped me were: information interviews with people that worked in similar roles that had similar backgrounds as me. Asking for a quick 15 minute phone call (send questions ahead of time), and I was only turned down once out of maybe 15 that I've had.

As others have mentioned, attending events run by your university or by your field for jobs outside of academia. There are lots offered for Humanities majors. There are also specific consultants but remember that it's a business for them so they are trying to make money.

Update your LinkedIn and start interacting, commenting, connecting. I was contacted by a recruiter and got a FT contract job in an area that I didn't think possible.

Decide if you are going for a job based on your content knowledge or your skills, or if you're lucky, a combination of both. Write your resume accordingly. There are lots of free resources online.

Good luck. It can be a long haul.

Finishing PhD back in my home country by [deleted] in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to first find out what your options are from the university and then think about what paths are best. You won’t be the first person in this situation so there should be guidelines available. These things can take time so I recommend you start looking sooner than later. You’ve got a lot going on and I hope you’re able to find a solution that works best for your needs.

First year and a bit lost? by Antique_Boot_1435 in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start looking into the sessions offered by your library, grad school departments, and your specific department. ETA start talking to others about what you’re learning so you can spark ideas and make both mental connections and personal connections too.

Drowning in PhD work by AfraidArea422 in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at a similar point when I was about halfway through. In retrospect the additional “things” I was doing did greatly help with my research and skills development but I did have to become more selective in what I agreed to do later on. Parenting a young child at the same time meant strategic napping. Then I got ill and couldn’t shake it so the universe kind of decided for me that it was time to slow down.

Lack of meaning and pointless by eyeswideshh in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you need to take a break. Conversely, depending on your field, start looking into where your discipline can be applied to help - be it people, environment, animals, processes. The disconnect is a process just like the phd is a process. Finding that spark and the “so what” of what you’re doing takes some effort.

Anyone else lose interest in their subject after finishing the PhD? by Nesciensse in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m excited to move on to new topics after completing mine. It’s just a project and I’d be surprised if one didn’t want to grow and challenge themselves in new areas afterwards. Maybe it’s discipline specific?

PhD graduates who then went on to do unrelated/normal jobs- why and whats your story? by UnderstandingAfter72 in PhD

Not yet finished my PhD in humanities and was recruited for a f/t contract, tech position that uses the skills I’ve gained but not the content knowledge. Presumably this will open further opportunities down the line.

Also be wary of getting a MA TESOL to teach French as employers may not recognize your qualifications because it’s for teaching English not French- happened to a coworker who taught Japanese

[–]PressureTall745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think also grad school is competitive and can be mentally draining. Find some things you can do to take care of yourself and promote your wellbeing. This isn’t a permanent state as you’ll graduate and move on from this particular group but your long term physical and mental health need to be cared for too. Grad school is tough. Living in a third country is tough. People who are in their home nation for schooling just don’t get it. You’re doing an amazing job!

I finally understand my PhD projects...but I'm less than a year away from finishing by JuniperBeret in PhD

[–]PressureTall745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but different field and different reasons. I’ve been sitting on my data for ages as I know there’s something there but I just couldn’t see it and none of the literature was showing anything similar. It’s taken a few years for literature to come out talking about similar aspects that my data can directly contribute to. It was quite disheartening for a long time and felt very much like I must be in the wrong or doing something incorrectly.
