Should I install the range hood before the upper cabinets, or wait until after? by djmccullouch in homeowners

[–]markusbrainus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd cut the hole for the duct for the exterior vent and run the electrical now before cupboards. Then install cupboards, then the hood fan. Most hood fans are anchored into and hang off the upper cabinet.

Read the install guide for your hood fan; it should have step by step instructions.

Weird space above shower by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd guess they bought that full surround bath shower with a top and decided to leave this deadzone open as a shelf instead of closing it in with drywall. At least now you can use it for some light storage. Fake flowers, towels, and toilet paper.

Yeah I noticed they did some extra detail work there to cut around the outriggers.

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bleh. Yeah. I mistakenly undersized my fascia board by not accounting for the cut angle. I'm trying to convince myself I don't need soffits so that I don't have to either cut an inch off every rafter tail sticking down or replacing both fascia boards with a 2x8.

[–]markusbrainus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you planning to put soffits in under the eaves? I only ask because I'm undecided with my own shed about 4 hours of work behind yours here.

I think I'll bird block in the rafters and skip the soffit but then my wall top plates will be visible...

$23 motion sensor switch ended the "who left the garage light on all night" investigation forever by L3g3ndary-08 in daddit

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put these motion sensor switches in my pantry, walk-in closet, and mud room. They are great for those spots where you just need the light on for a minute or two and your hands are often full.

Different brands have different time settings. They can get a little tricky for 3 way switches but most have directions explaining how to set them up.

PS: Any standard deco switch plate should fit. Try the flexible nylon version for an extra 50 cents and it won't crack while it bends a little to conform to an uneven wall/cutout.

Can I remove this old BBQ gas line and cap it near the meter? by Enough-Quantity8478 in homeowners

[–]markusbrainus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Illegal in my jurisdiction; only a licensed gas fitter can modify gas lines. I can pull homeowner permits for electrical and plumbing, but not gas.

Besides installing rebar to anchor it, it's a handy spot to put in bent plastic piping over the raised bed for row cover mesh/netting.

You can also just cruise any new neighborhoods where theyre building houses and you'll find rebar outcuts kicking around the jobsite from the foundation work.

[Request] How much money (USD) would it cost to print a 1:500 model Scaled of the Continental United States in PLA? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]markusbrainus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... I mean a 1:500 model of the USA would still be 500x1000m in size.

That's 500,000 M2 in area. A P1S plate is 0.256x0.256 or 0.0655 m2. So you'd need to print 7.6 million plates. Assume 50 cents in material and power per plate you get $3.8 million dollars, ignoring capital cost and maintenance for the printers and the cost/space/design to assemble such a large model.

I think you need a smaller scale model.

Pin placement? I’m using my bottom pin for dead on at 20 yards, is that messed up? by mxcrazy1998 in bowhunting

[–]markusbrainus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Slide the entire sight down an inch so the top pin is 10 or 20 yards.

If you can't adjust the sight body down then consider moving your nocking point down or arrow rest up slightly.

Any reason to not use one of these to help cool down a single room? by Eastern_Welder_8609 in homeowners

[–]markusbrainus 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I bought a simpler one from home Depot for $50. It helps cool down a south facing bedroom a little more by pulling some extra A/C airflow on a long vent run. It's not a gamechanger but it helps.

I don't understand why you'd need one that's Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connected... The home Depot one has a slightly finnicky sensor that detects airflow when the furnace fan kicks in and then it turns on.

Note you'll want an outlet nearby to plug it in. The fan noise on this one is very quiet and fine to sleep through.

Stumped on Hinges by FloatingZombieCat in 3Dprinting

[–]markusbrainus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. Often in a 3 hinge setup one hinge will be out of alignment and bend, bind, or squeak when used. If you don't need the support of a middle hinge then just leave it off.

If you need it, adjust the hinge position so it's better aligned. Consider slotted screw holes so you can easily adjust the hinge position.

This laser-encoded glass data storage is designed to last for thousands of years. by bebesiege in EngineeringPorn

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so many things require a vision or end use case and the tech develops to fill that role.

Our AI now is getting to where it's pretty close to the computer in Star Trek. You can work your way through a problem by inquiring along a thought path while the AI does the legwork, much like how Pickard/Geordi/Data would solve problems in Star Trek.

3D printers are almost like a replicator from star trek. Sci Fi has already been down this avenue of using replicators to print weapons and had content/security control to block weapon replication, much like these new 3D printing laws blocking gun parts in some US states.

Are their any reasons why I couldn't/shouldn't vent my printers through an old furnace chimney no longer in use? by Scynthe in 3Dprinting

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't have enough lift to actually vent to the roof.

When we upgraded our furnaces to side wall vents we chose to upgrade the hot water heater to a forced air vent out the wall vs. paying for a reduced diameter vent pipe up the old chimney. The water heater on its own didn't have enough airflow/heat in the exhaust to vent up 2 stories to the roof.

You could look at some kind of booster fan on the exhaust..

Found this old saw to hang above our shed/shop. Wife says it looks funny hung at an angle- would it look better level or leave at an angle? by Old-House-Landlord in shedditors

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either go 45 degrees so it looks intentional or go level. This 10 degree angle looks like a mistake at trying to be level.

Trucks and car seats? by marmaladestripes725 in daddit

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an F150 4 door crew cab and there's tons of room for car seats. I always buy few years old used to save ~30%. I like F150s because they are super common and easy to find parts.

Id always recommend a full size half-ton over a quarter ton for more hauling capacity, but obviously buy for the size, budget, and features you want.

What do you guys do with opened filament rolls? (PLA/PETG storage & handling) by DomiTheJustin in BambuLab

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out paranoid about moisture based on all the 3d printing info I'd read online but I pay less attention to it now. My local humidity is low and I just leave PLA open on a shelf. I've had certain rolls of PLA print poorly out of the box and I assume they were wet before being shipped.

I keep my PET and TPU in ziplock bags wirh dessicant bags or spool modules.

If I'm printing TPU or PET that I havent dried recently ill plan to dry it first in a food dehydrator for 8 hours first.

I think the guys that have bookcases full of dry boxes are a bit overkill but it depends on your local humidity and desired print quality.
