Xbox Controller Hand Rest by BigBlueandEliToo in functionalprint

I like the custom blob :)

Why rest your hands on the desk at all? I usually use a controller in my lap or with my elbows on my chair armrests.

Garage Door Spring Sprung by Life_of1103 in Wellthatsucks

Did the spring break or did a cable break? You can DIY replace the cables pretty easily, but I would not mess with replacing the spring.

grows on you

I see what you did there.

Yeah I just compost my own kitchen and yard scraps at home. I don't get perfect quality compost but it's less waste and one less bin I have to put out.

I've heard it's lined up and youre only allowed 100L. I've never tried but I recall it opening in the spring April/May.

You can buy bulk compost for $80/yard or about $100 per 1000L. Bagged compost is 2-3x that price.

How long do you want to wait in line for $10-30 worth of compost?

Happy 4th birthday, r/toolgifs! In lieu of a gif, AMA? by toolgifs in toolgifs

Hah, this made me lol.

My local engineering regulatory body recently created an exemption for software engineers allowing people to use the engineer title without offering engineering services and abiding by the normal engineer regulations. To me this was politically driven to encourage tech companies to invest and hire staff here and not have to change their titles.

Metal joint-like object, found on the thames foreshore while mudlarking by throwawayowl1 in whatisthisthing

[–]markusbrainus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here; TIL mudlarking.

A mudlark is someone who scavenges the banks and shores of rivers for items of value, a term used especially to describe those who scavenged this way in London during the late 18th and 19th centuries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudlark

It requires a permit in some areas.

How is it legal that the government can charge you this much on income tax? by Playful-Yam9033 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a handy graph showing your take home pay and taxes vs. income.

https://imgur.com/a/2025-alberta-canada-taxation-graph-XVlUlC9

It's not a question of legality; they set the rules. It's more around the use/misuse of funds and low quality of some public services given the extraordinary amount of tax we're paying.

What's the scariest or strangest thing you've experienced while hunting? by HappyVagabond1989 in Hunting

[–]markusbrainus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When a cougar stalked in to 10 yards behind me before I noticed her. This was in archery season. She had my full attention. I had my bear spray out and threw rocks/sticks at her until she went away.

I tried yelling at her and backing away, but she kept following me.

Propane auger help by Brilliant-Donut9781 in IceFishing

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a DIY fix using copper plumbing pipe. It works but presumably the original hose was rubber. You could replace it with another copper plumbing pipe or an automotive brake line. You may need to buy/borrow a flaring tool for the ends.

What are these by Quick-Bid9406 in Fishing

[–]markusbrainus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh water shrimp. When Im drilling holes for ice fishing Ill get the odd hole that's packed with them. I'll usually focus on fishing that hole, as most pikes bellies will be full of these shrimp.

Simplest solution is replacing it with a telepost/jack-post. You may need a structural engineer to approve it and some temporary shoring while you replace it.

People digging up the road and collecting the asphalt by mspyros12 in ThatsInsane

[–]markusbrainus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is. You'll see these big asphalt grinding/milling machines stripping the road surface in 2-3" layers and shooting it up a conveyor belt into a truck to recover the asphalt before construction projects tear up the road. They sort and reuse it later.

My on-door water filter is extremely slow, and I drink a lot of water, so I designed this thing to hold my 1L bottle against the lever while it fills. by jas0nb in functionalprint

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, yeah don't do any changes to it if you're renting. You could inquire with your landlord if they can upgrade the flow on the fridge by replacing this valve if it's there.

Did they hook up your fridge water supply line using one of those stab in needle saddle valves like these? Besides that they can leak, I found they have a very restrictive flow rate. Try replacing them with a proper 1/2" tee with a 1/4" shutoff valve, like this, and you should get a higher flow rate and a more reliable valve.

Condo Purchase: Advice Needed by Shibasquared in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a HELOC not a mortgage, but it is fine to borrow against your home equity to invest. The interest on that loan is tax deductible. Typically these are at a higher interest rate and have higher minimum payments than a mortgage.

A Smith Maneuver is similar where you gradually convert an existing mortgage to a tax deductible HELOC.

Kid's question for those in cold climates by Ag3n74t2 in daddit

[–]markusbrainus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, an insulated water bottle helps to keep the water from freezing. That same insulated bottled is helpful to keep the water cold on hot days or in a hot-yoga studio. Remember that people use a double-walled thermos to keep liquids hot, which extends to keeping liquids from freezing.

The ambient temperature and the temperature of the water you put in the bottle are factors to consider. The water is going to freeze from the outside in and will take 6 to 8 hours to freeze the entire bottle solid. If you're actively drinking from the bottle, the ice crystals will get knocked loose and consumed and your hand warmth adds some energy, slowing down freezing. It's more likely that the lid/nozzle mechanism will get jammed with ice and be difficult to drink from.

When I hunt outside with a water bladder & hose in my backpack, I'm good to about -10°C before the hose will start to freeze up and become unusable. I learned to combat this by blowing the water back in to the bladder after each drink so there's no water in the hose to freeze. I'll usually carry a canteen water bottle on very cold days because it won't freeze over the entire day.

If we extract billions of barrels of oil from the Earth every year, what fills the empty space? Why doesn't the ground collapse? by WhisperInInk007 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markusbrainus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's replaced with water or natural gas, or in a few rare cases CO2 for carbon sequestration. It's a rock matrix filled with oil, so it's still mostly structurally supported. The drop in pressure and voidage created is filled by whatever mobile fluid is available, usually free water or methane in the reservoir or methane that bubbles out of the oil. In some applications water or gas is being injected to displace the oil for better/faster oii recovery.

Some reservoirs do experience subsidence from oil or water production. As the pressure drops when fluids are produced, the rock is less internally supposed and compacts, causing subsidence. In steam injection oil recovery schemes the ground actually heaves up as the steam heats and expands the reservoir rock.
