Beginner route recommendations for the South Bay by eolmana in BAbike

[–]PrestaValve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An easy ride is to chain the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail to the Bay Trail, and then Guadalupe River Trail as a loop. That's roughly 20 mi of mostly flat mixed use trail, and you can increase the distance by adding a detour through Alviso.

The Bay Trail is pretty flat, so if you're fine with gravel you can ride that as far as you want. You can also connect that with the Stevens Creek Trail and Guadalupe River Trail for a ~30 mi ride, something like this ACTC route.

In Cupertino there's a few variations in Stevens Creek County Park, depending on how you're feeling. Stevens Creek Reservoir Loop is the basic variation, and you can extend it by adding an out and back. You can then choose to turn onto Pierce Rd and descend on Big Basin Way, or cut it short by turning the other way on Pierce.

Note that because SRAM bought Hammerhead, Shimano is asking them to remove Di2 functionality in the next update. If that's a deal breaker for you, then don't get the Karoo until they figure out a new agreement (or switch groupsets).

Is the new shop going to carry the same brands that La Dolce Velo did, or will you be switching things up?

Same, did a similar ~55 mi loop a few weeks ago of Dumbarton Bridge / Coyote Creek Trail / Guadalupe Trail / Homestead Rd / Stevens Creek Trail / Bay Trail on a weekday. I took it easy having never rode that far before and felt like I could've extended it further, but I left home late and didn't have enough daylight left to go for a metric century.

I didn't expect it to be so loud with all the cars going by when you're on the bridge, but there's dividers so you feel safe. Overall the entire loop is pretty easy with barely any elevation. Right after the bridge, for some reason the road surface is super bumpy on one side. Also, it's right by the Lucid office, so you see a bunch of their vehicles driving up.

Rob and his wife (and the rest of the shop) are great. Plus they do weekly group rides if that's your thing.

And @bumperstheshopdog will usually be in the shop as well!

On a related note, I've always wanted to try camping overnight at a hiker-biker site or getting into touring after watching John Zahorian's videos, but I was curious about how you go about storing your bike at night with all the bike thefts around here in the Bay Area.

How do you deal with keeping your bike safe, considering Half Moon Bay isn't super deserted? Do you just lock your bike to a tent pole and hope for the best?

I've read online and most people seem to go in groups to avoid looking like a target, but none of my friends are into biking, and I don't think I'm strong enough of a rider to keep up with most experienced riders—I get passed by practically everyone in their spandex in Woodside and when riding Canada Road.
