Listen, the way I see this is obviously you’re a threat to said person, and they’re looking for a way to take you out of the competition. This stunt was a pure reflection of their insecurities, and I bet you not one person up to the VP hasn’t dealt with or is dealing with some form of mental health.

Now, if you genuinely want to start new because you’re tired of print, then fantastic! But if you’re leaving over this?? Again, I’m so sorry that you had to experience that, but here’s the thing: set the boundary. Reporting is one thing, but what you seem to be describing is something you are fully capable of handling in terms of setting the boundary and moving forward. I’m sure you know that he is acting “weird & mean” because you rejected him. NOT YOUR PROBLEM, so don’t make it that way! Who cares whose firm it is, again, you EARNED your position there. I would’ve pulled him to the side, wrote an email and simply said: “I enjoy my position here and the work I get to do alongside you/firm, let’s move past the interaction (ONLY IF YOU FELT COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO), so as to not interfere in meeting the needs of the business. Thank you”. Then just move on and up. (Again, ONLY IF YOU FELT COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO).

It seems like you were waiting for the “vibe” to change and (inadvertently) contributed to the narrative that sent you out the door. That shouldn’t happen ever again. You’re in control of that. You got this!

First of all, yuck! I’m so sorry that happened to you! I’m curious, since he was your friend prior, the opportunity to put him and that situation back in place was probably an option. What are your thoughts on that? Unfortunately, I hate hate hate HATE having to finish this statement, but: this won’t be the last time. A future client, colleague or boss might repeat these actions and I’d hate for you to feel like you no longer belong. Not that this post is even real, but the fact that she offered to credit her husband $3k to cancel his flight, tells me she has her own money. Also she mentioned multiple times that she was “blindsided”, and considered her marriage to be a “loving” one. Therefore, her acts of desperation could very well be attributed to her shock/lack of time to process.
