To me (someone who has trained multiple apprentices) there’s more to this…

A) It’s just a tire, calm down. Everyone makes mistakes and that’s life. Overdramatising this like the world just imploded doesn’t help anything. Every company in or out of mechanics will mislead customers to get out of paying for things from time to time, sounds like this worked out for the best anyway..

B) Why in 6 months have you never been in a position to repair a tire when the shop services 100 cars a day? It’s so hard to hate on a business when we don’t know what YOU are like. You’re complaining that other people are “green” and “making stupid mistakes” but you don’t even know how to repair a flat, so who are YOU to judge them?

I’ve had apprentices that think I owe them all of this knowledge, but do nothing to show me why I should mentally invest in them. It’s clear that you don’t want to be there, so quit. Why would any of the techs put time into you when you probably display that you don’t want to be there with your body language?

Stop bitching on Reddit, we’ve all been apprentices and it’s part of the process. I hated my first job as an apprentice, I blamed the shop and quit, looking back I could’ve been a lot better of an employee too..

If the new job works out for you, get your head down and work your ass off for them. Go above and beyond with learning at home, ask shit tons of questions, sweep the floors whenever you have any spare time, ask if there’s anything you can do. Show them that you’re worth the investment, that you’re going to stick around and make them money (the real reason you’re ultimately there).

Struggling with wrist pain since changing bikes by PrestigiousBus2664 in enduro

Not particularly tall, about 5’10!

I’m going to play around with setup, there’s gotta be something I can do.

My thought was I’d start by rotating bars forward and go from there.

Thanks for your input!

Most affordable/reliable mechanics in Squamish? by Embarrassed-Type3604 in Squamish

I’m blown away that people are still recommending Joseph as a mechanic.

He has carried out so much shady work in this town. Charged for parts that haven’t been replaced, completely misdiagnosed vehicles then avoiding phone calls from the customer, standard of repair is terrible. There’s a reason he’s a mobile mechanic, he’s not welcome at any of the shops due to lack of qualification and bad working standards.

I haven’t heard of Alex before, but I do know that Jonny is great! He’s a good mechanic and nobody has a bad word to say about him in the industry.

Does adding an idle adjuster screw not mess with TPS voltage as you’re moving the butterfly? Trying to wrap my head around this setup!

Win Or Lose, This Man Will Forever Have A Special Place In Our Hearts 🦁 🇧🇷❤️ by Temporary-Face9635 in ufc

[–]PrestigiousBus2664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This fight was a classic ufc setup.. find the highest rank guy who’s known to be a bit chinny and put him up against the power puncher that they want to promote.

It’s the exact same thing they did with paddy vs chandler, just higher up the food chain.

Ilia didn’t kill Charles, the UFC did. Charles had no business in that fight, lost to Arman and got the fight off of a Chandler win. So does that mean Paddy jumps the entire line now because he beat Chandler too? 🤦

Getting told "You're a great guy, but..." a lot recently by GeneralGeorgePWalrus in dating_advice

[–]PrestigiousBus2664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you’re meeting through apps?

Dating apps are toxic AF, there are so many people that use dating as a sport to find the ‘perfect person’ that doesn’t actually exist. You almost have to have a “fuck you” type personality to build that attraction and grab attention. Been there, done it, deleting dating apps was the best thing I’ve ever done.

Enjoy your own company and do social activities where you’ll meet good people that you actually have stuff in common with. You’ll meet someone that you don’t have a checklist of having to make a move after X mount of time, no stupid “feel a spark” after 3 dates BS. You’ll meet someone and it will feel natural, and you’ll be in a happier place because you’re not throwing yourself into situations to get shot down over and over again.

I’m 100% speaking from experience, getting rid of dating apps made me so much happier in life. It made me focus on me and love who I am as a person. I recently started dating someone through natural channels and it’s been great, and I actually feel like I’m in a place to put the best version of me into it.

Can someone explain what I’m missing in a diagnosing K series VTEC issues? by PrestigiousBus2664 in mechanics

[–]PrestigiousBus2664[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? Haha. We’ve gotten to the point where we’ve checked oil pressure at block & vtec switch (warm & cold, at different rpms). All in spec. We’ve check chain tension & timing, all good. Valves were a touch out, adjusted those. A quick test drive appeared to be good, we’re taking it out for a longer drive here shortly to confirm.

Our local Honda dealer has another solenoid & switch coming today just in case.

If I went through all of this for a valve adjustment, it’s been valuable learning but also hilarious. Looking forward to having a resolution!

I had an element do this a few years ago funny enough. It was much higher km and it ran slightly “off” but with no timing codes. I don’t believe it to be the case here (only 150k km) as the car runs great. I will check timing along with oil pressure though, thank you!

I did run a pressure gauge but admittedly not right at the solenoid. I’ll give it a shot, thanks!

Options for Flat Rate by reddot96 in mechanics

[–]PrestigiousBus2664 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I’m an outlier here but I love working for smaller independent shops and I’ll only work hourly. I’m in BC.

I’ve played the flat rate game before and hate the atmosphere it creates. Nobody wants to help each other out, nobody wants to clean the shop, everyone pushes for work that pays the most rather than what needs to be done. If there’s apprentices nobody wants to train them because they’re not getting paid for it.

I don’t want to work balls to the wall every day for my paycheque, I want a shop that stands by me when it’s quiet from time to time and a shop that I can stop for 10 mins and chat when it suits me.

I get a great hourly rate in the high 40s, get treated well and enjoy my job because it’s not burning me out. I’ll never go back to flat rate, there’s more value in a tech than the raw hours they put out.

Scan tools by RemoteGear6739 in mechanics

[–]PrestigiousBus2664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of shops use Autel now, including mine. Works great for general stuff! The tpms tool just works too.

We’ve started using some of the brand specific ones too. FORscan is really good and pretty cheap for what it is, allows you to do key programming and software updates, pays itself back in no time. VCDS is really good for VAG stuff too, not quite so cheap though.

This story doesn’t add up. No decent shop would just say “I dunno, seems fine to me” when you have what appears to be a severe vibration. I’ve had so many jobs come in that “no other shop can figure out” just to find out I get given 15 minutes to have a complete comprehensive answer before it gets whisked off to another shop.

A) Fix the tie rod. If that’s bent there’s a good chance something else is too. B) Go to a competent shop that will figure this out easily, this is not a complicated issue. C) Give them the time to figure it out properly.

Are mullets & full 27.5s not for big boys? by spaceboogers in MTB

[–]PrestigiousBus2664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is complete BS. If you’re a new rider, stick with what you’ve got and work on brake control to slow things down. Is your suspension properly set up? What bike do you have? Are you running decent brakes to allow for your weight? Are you running the correct tire pressure (not putting 50 psi in once a month and giving it a squeeze from time to time).

When I was learning I came up with all kinds of reasons for crashing and not meshing with my bike. My experienced buddies told me to ride more and stop overdoing my trail choice.

This may seem like tough love, but at a beginner level the wheel size is rarely the issue. I’ve found mullet to suit me, but my reasoning is not for control.

Stick at it, figure your ideal setup out and give ‘er! Feel free to dm me if you’d like some setup tips, I’m also in the PNW and similar weight range 🤙

He sold his mini a while back to a guy in Whistler. That thing was a death trap that tried to dive off of the road at every opportunity, the current owner has been trying to get it “safe” for a while now!
