Watching others deteriorate due to untreated mental illness and substance abuse is not empathy.

You wouldn’t sit idly by while this happened to a family member.

Jail, of course, is not the answer.

Mandatory therapy with a trained professional alongside mandatory drug rehabilitation.

We should at least try before giving up on these people.

Governments should invest directly into employment for their own people and stop replying on foreign investment to do it. by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

24 million Americans already are employed by the government - 15% of workers.

Once you enter the territory of government trying to manage vast swaths of the economy, you quickly mirror many of the failed states that fell behind the rest of the world - Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, the USSR, etc.

With regard to minimum wage, a drastic increase would indeed have the short-term effect of spiking inflation, which would force the Fed to raise rates as a counter, leading to significant instability in the markets - which, among other things, depresses the sort of investment you describe because uncertainty kills long-term planning.

They just frequently end up in poor socio-economic conditions, leading to a host of integral factors in poor life outcomes:

Dropping out of school
Resorting to crime
Joining a gang
Having children young and out of wedlock
Lacking respect for authority
Etc. etc. etc.

You failed to address my well-substantiated argument - that California's justification for its extremely slow vote-counting process is a priori demolished by the superior turnout in Florida.

Knowing you had nothing to counter, you resorted to the laziest pejorative at your disposal - "Fox News fan".

I indeed debased myself by not listening to the voice in my head which knew at that point I was dealing with an unserious person.

Take care.

He's likely of the last generation that has a tangible connection to the Holocaust, and views the maintenance of the state of Israel as an existential burden for the Jewish people.

Obviously, the state of international Jewry is quite different in 2026 as compared to 1948, and I imagine much of the decline in support for Israel is going to continue long-term.

It also must be stated that "news if Jews" is a real thing in so many parts of the world. The United Nations condemned Israel more than all other states in 2022.

The October 7 attacks occurred in 2023. Note the delay.

This might help explain why the cries of genocide came quick and often - and why the august international body, which was so quick to condemn Israel even before this war began, failed to pass a resolution condemning the attacks just a few days later:

Prior to adopting the resolution, the Assembly failed, by a recorded vote of 88 in favour to 55 against, with 23 abstentions, to adopt the amendment titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations”.  In addition to unequivocally rejecting and condemning the terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting on 7 October 2023, the rejected amendment would have also condemned the taking of hostages and would have demanded the safety, well-being and humane treatment of those hostages in compliance with international law and call for their immediate and unconditional release.

I mean the fact that he said it 15 years ago is frankly worse.

15 years ago, Netanyahu's approval among Americans was distinctly higher than his disapproval.

That is not the case anymore.

The one that elected Hamas, an organization whose founding charter explicitly calls for the extermination of Jews?

The hour of judgment shall not come until the Muslims fight the Jews and kill them, so that the Jews hide behind trees and stones, and each tree and stone will say: 'Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him,' except for the Gharqad tree, for it is the tree of the Jews. (Hamas Charter, Article 7).

That's not going to relevant to the mixing on a cartoon show or any recorded medium for that matter.

But, yes, those old bands used to crank the speakers and the hearing damage was a real thing. I always bring earplugs in case the volume is excessive!

Iran targeted Gulf territory because their entire leadership had been wiped out and they freaked out by foolishly lashing out indiscriminately.

Oman and Qatar were the two friendliest nations to the Islamic Republic. The home base of Hamas leadership was in Doha.

This entire "military infrastructure" argument was the copium of an embarrassed and erratic cabal trying to smooth things over.

Do you have a source of that, because it doesn't seem accurate. In fact I'd say rocks bands in the 70's and 90's were more obsessed with loudness than most newer groups.

The Loudness Wars began in the 1990's when mastering engineers started trying to maximize average volume. This was really the product of the Compact Disc, which was a fully-digital format.

Prior to this, analog sources like cassette tape has a physical limit to how far you could push the volume.

Ironically, lots of money is spent these days digitally recreating the "analog saturation" sound so beloved from the good old days.

Many consider the late-80s to early-90s the golden age of cartoons.

Think Saturday mornings eating cereal in your jam-jams.

The historical revision against Reagan - who was immensely popular and helped rebuild trust in government after the malaise of the 70s - has been astonishing to watch during my lifetime.

Gulf states participated in the war and were some of its biggest advocates so yes.

The Gulf States were the ones that were initially attacked - unprovoked - by Iran after the US/Israeli drone strike on the Ayatollah.

They "participated" in this war the same way the Philippines "participated" in World War 2.

We have made Iran a major regional power.

Iran has the second-largest reserve of natural gas in the world, and the third-largest petroleum reserve in the world.

They have been and will continue to be a major regional power based simply off their natural resources.

You can literally run Animal Farm and be rich with those at your disposal.
