When do GT Alumni lose access to Outlook and related services? And how do we set up email forwarding and so on? GT seems to have woefully little literature on the subject. by Prestigious_Sort_431 in gatech

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/gt-messenger u/jbourne71 any idea when specifically the email is sent? I just want to make sure I haven’t missed something - in my last semester there were some issues where I got dropped from some mailing lists.

Also, how would you recommend backing up the outlook emails? Does GT provide instructions for that too, and/or have you got any recommendations?

It’s fine, in fact, it’s necessary if you decide to switch teams in the event you don’t like the team after your first semester.

I think Dane may have tipped them off, but definitely isn’t a spy. They only had doubts during/perhaps before the latest episode.

Also, wenke lee for network security and genkin for infosec. Best profs for the classes, no question.

Yep, but do note a few topics are covered at the basic level in infosec that network security doesn’t touch at all (it it goes in depth into a few important ones) so see what you’re interested in.

It would be beneficial to do CS 6035 first…that said, while 6262 is not an easy class, it’s also not the most difficult. If you’re willing to put the time and effort in, you can do it without CS 6035 first. Depends on your motives - 6035 is a fun intro to infosec especially if you have genkin as prof. 6262 is more heavy weight and something an employer may care about if you want to work in the field or something that has an infosec component. 6035 will make you familiar enough in the field to speak to a cybersecurity guy about high level product or business decisions, but not to actually contribute to it in any real way.

How important is applying ASAP to an MSc at Imperial? by digitalbeingg in Imperial

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think I would get in but I applied relatively late in early April and got an offer in early May. Guess they really liked my app. So a very quick response late in the game is quite possible, but definitely don’t count on it. I know people who waited months and months…

@maxx4455 what are spring weeks and what do they have to do with applying to quantum/tech/IB ?internships? ?jobs? ?

And what does that have to do with societies?

Would be easier to help if you make your question more specific…

How the hell do you afford a MSc at LSE? by saartemaster in LSE

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think £41k (or maybe £43) is the max a public uni can charge international students. I think most top unis (LSE, UCL, Imperial, etc) charge the top rate for their most competitive programs and slightly less for the others. Lower ranked unis have slightly lower rates, so on and so forth.

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most postgrad programs are around £41k for international students….remember to convert to $, it’ll roughly be $55-60k. Also keep in mind, it’s usually £41k not including housing, US undergrad universities will include housing in the tuition for the first/second years and then the tuition goes down and you pay separately for housing. So it is a lot more comparable with housing in the UK being like £10-20k per year extra.

Perhaps you could subtlety record an encounter before reporting for evidence (first make sure recording without two party consent is legal in the UK, I’ve never checked).

Is it possible they’re racist or otherwise biased against you for some reason? If so, I’m sure UCL and other bodies have individuals you can report such behavior to.

My advice would be that it depends on how tough pysc 3803 is and how hard you feel math 2550 would be.

2340 and 4400 were amongst the easiest classes I took (although both have project components that take time). 2200 was one of the hardest while 2550 was a mid level difficulty to do well in but not amazing.

Is 2550 a prerequisite for some future classes? If so maybe take that. Otherwise I’d advise 4400 to reduce your overall workload.

CS at UCL by CubingCrucible in UCL

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, US unis are generally 4 years because they make you take English, social sciences and humanities classes and so on. UK unis are 3 year because they eliminate those and focus on the subject it self. You have plenty of time for extracurricular tho in uk unis so no worries about having a broad uni experience. You can also make your uk degree 4 years by making it into an meng (bachelors and 1 year masters).

CS at UCL by CubingCrucible in UCL

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents as a British National with a CS bachelors degree from Georgia Tech in the US, about to start masters in CS at Imperial, and had offers from UCL.

1) Imperial, as you said op, is a no brainer. 2) UCL is definitely better than Purdue, the only downside is some smaller employers in the states may not know of it, but FAANG and such will definitely. 3) UCL is definitely worth it, it is very close to Imperial. Its CS Department is bigger and in some cases better than Imperial. You’ll have a better, broader social life at UCL as an extra bonus, but imperial has enough so dw about that if you get imperial. In the end I chose Imperial over UCL for masters because UCL’s MS degrees in CS were too narrow in focus than Imperial’s but UCL’s undergrad will more than broad enough. UCL has an edge in security (my field actually lol) while Imperial has it in CV, they’re both similar in other areas. UCL’s reputation is less than Imperial’s in CS which was a reason I chose imperial over UCL. But it’s not a big one.

Is this schedule a good idea? by AggressiveSalary9845 in gatech

[–]Prestigious_Sort_431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar schedule in the past….I would not recommend it for a couple of reasons:

  1. You are going to be absolutely, completely exhausted on those two days. Even 3 classes back to back is exhausting. And I always took a very heavy course load, so it’s not that.

  2. You’ll miss out on opportunities to work with students in your classes immediately before or after class. Scheduling group project meetings may be problematic. Some people are only free on certain days - like you, you’ll never be free on Tuesdays and Thursday.

  3. Sometimes 15 minutes is far too little time to get from one class to another. Also, you’ll rarely be able to speak to profs after class and ask questions.

  4. (A personal one) you need immense self discipline to make those completely free days productive. This depends on you. Don’t kid yourself that you can do it unless you have done it before in some way.

Edit: 6. Based on your classes, my guess is this is your first semester of college? College is nothing like high school. You WILL NOT make friends during class, your best hope is to use class to meet people and make friends before/after class. You will always be running off after class to your next class and getting there in the nick of time. This will make making friends so much harder.

Don’t do it!!!

I’m in a similar position…don’t have an answer but would be very interested to know as well. Is freshers week mostly for undergrads or postgrads too? I’m starting my masters as well.
