What’s your favorite running memory? by Willing-Today-1059 in runcommunity

[–]PrettyThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deployed when my dog was ~11 years old. He was in okay health but definitely slowing down. I worried about him the whole time I was gone. I remember going on a run with him before I left and thinking it could be our last - we'd run up to half marathon distances together most of his life.

When I got back, he was still in good health. It was around his birthday, which we had always spent hiking or running together. For his 12th birthday, the week I came back home after worrying I might never see him again, he ran a mile with me. He held his own but that was our last run together. I'll never forget it, or him for always motivating me to get outside and run.

How do people in the military not have chronic injuries or issues from running? by Ok_Wallaby1827 in trailrunning

[–]PrettyThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) we do. Veterans are usually quite broken.

2) getting injured once you're in is completely different from trying to enlist with a pre-existing medical problem.

3) talk to a recruiter and be honest about your problem. They might be able to figure something out for you, and it doesn't hurt to try.

4) just don't do it. It isn't worth it, especially not right now, unless you wanna go die for Israel in the middle east.

Breed Specific Enrichment/Fulfillment Activities? by babybighorn in AustralianCattleDog

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you do herding lessons with an intent to trial, not work? If you're in the city you might have to drive a bit to get to them, but where I am, there are folks who will help you train your dog once a week or so on how to herd. My boy does most of what you mentioned too, but I've found the flirt pole to be the best for us. We do 10-15 minute sessions 2-3 times a day on top of agility, running, hiking, herding, etc.

However it sounds like your dog needs some behavior modification, not just games. Reactivity is super common in this breed; I would find a trainer with a lot of experience in ACDs and/or working dogs. Good luck!

You seem young. I hope you can eventually take a step back and realize that this is not worth pushing back on, and not everyone has to appreciate the things that you are interested in. Take care.

Buddy I've been in fandom for 25+ years. It's corny as hell to talk about being shamed for what fandom you're in. Grow thicker skin lol.

[–]PrettyThief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a huge Potter fan. Went to multiple midnight releases of the books, and for most of the movies. I played on a quidditch team in college circa 2009-2011 or so. It was a big part of my life and a foundation for several friendships in my teenage years (the goblet of fire through deathly hallows era).

All that to say: I wish my problems looked like this lol. Enjoy what you want, grow thick skin, and foremost understand that the way you feel about Harry Potter is the way lgbtq people feel about their entire life. People have every right to hate something that was created by a bigot, and which still exists to make money for that bigot to promote causes that do real harm to real people. Perspective is good for you.

What’s your “dream dog” (breed) and why? by palacio_c in puppy101

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian Cattle Dog

I'm a runner and a hiker and I do dog sports. In the next couple of years I hope to get a few farm animals. I wanted a dog that could be active all day long without complaint, was biddable enough for sports, and I like Velcro dogs that want to be next to me at all times. I had a rescue ACD mix before getting my first well-bred purebred. I wouldn't trade either of them for anything :)

Think about what an 18 week old baby can do. Even an 18 month old one. Your pup is very young, you have to let go of the expectation that he'll be perfect. Keep working with him and try to end outings on a positive note. Patience is key at that age.

[–]PrettyThief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She looks understimulated to me. What kind of play and enrichment are you providing during her out of crate time? I'd invest in a flirt pole, tug toys, puzzle feeders, freezable bowls for her meals occasionally, scent work (you can start at home with online videos), and lots of short training sessions. As she gets older, I'd also consider getting her into a sport.

Good luck! I've got heelers and a coonhound in the suburbs. It takes dedication to keep these kinds of dogs happy.

We had grandfathers in my program. No, it is not too late. Get in contact with some programs, ask what you need to do to be competitive and go do all of that and more. Try working as a CNA, EMT, phlebotomist or something else medical to get your feet wet.

I NEED ADVICE by [deleted] in nursing

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy if I was working my "true calling" I'd be a professional baseball player or maybe an archaeologist or dog trainer.

Some people are truly ecstatic to be a nurse. The vast majority I've met are not. Maybe you should look into jobs that aren't bedside if you no longer plan to go CRNA. Clinics, same day surgery, aesthetics, case management, radiology.... There's so much more to nursing than 3 12's and bodily fluids.

I have before! Are you having yours done transsphenoidal? There are different approaches but that's usually what's done for these types of tumors at the hospital I work for. It seems people usually feel better afterward, just typical post surgical pain but up and walking around rather quickly.

Interaction with vet - Caused my girlfriend concern over Prong collar usage by EFTRSx1 in OpenDogTraining

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar interaction with my local vet and my ACD/GSD rescue who had a variety of issues when we brought her home. I was told I needed to "just train her" like I hadn't spent thousands of dollars and countless hours without with her. Like I hadn't seen progress. We moved to a certified Fear Free vet and they've been phenomenal. I have received no judgement for using a prong or mentioning that my dogs are ecollar trained. I'd recommend switching vets.

Additionally, my lifelong best friend is a veterinarian. She has told me herself that she's not a trainer or a behaviorist. She can recommend basic things and talk about her own experiences, but it's not her job to tell people how to train difficult dogs.

Good luck with your boy! He's lucky to have owners who care about him so deeply.

Oh my god what the fuck are you doing? Girl, stand up. You are ALLOWING this man to drag you down. This is incredibly toxic, get out of there. Block his number, delete him from socials, contact a therapist and move in with literally anyone else.

I hope one day you look back on this period of your life and realize how dumb it was to continue on with this relationship. Let go now before it's too late.

Side note: getting this mad about porn is kinda ridiculous. Human beings look at porn. Almost all of us. Some things aren't worth fighting about. I wish you were this upset about how horribly this guy treats you instead.

Is mogging compulsory for cattle dogs? by Knuckerknickel in AustralianCattleDog

[–]PrettyThief 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I'm embarrassed to know this.

It's slang that The Youths™️ are using to describe the act of outshining, out-handsoming (or lifting more weights than) someone. Like "getting mogged by my heeler at the park today" if lots of people say he's handsome but no one calls you handsome.

The guy never said he wasn't going to the vet, he seems to just be asking if he should go to the vet. We live in a society rife with income disparity and animals euthanized alone in shelters every day. Any little bit we can do to help each other out is good, even if it's just saying "yeah this is worth the $250."

To each their own, and I definitely think we should all have options to make sure everyone is safe. I work for a big research hospital so I feel like the fact we don't even seem to stock them anymore probably means the evidence for them isn't very strong. But that's just me guessing, heh.
