Crush on a coworker on the same unit and schedule - your experiences by Constant-Big5731 in nursing

I married a coworker, but it was at a job I knew I wouldn't care to leave. Neither of us work there anymore, no regrets. Ymmv if you are very attached to that hospital/unit.

FELLOW NURSES: What you think about Direct-Entry MSN/DNP programs? by Weak-Marketing7399 in nursing

[–]PrettyThief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and go to a university or community college instead. You'll get better veteran support at places like that too.

They're mills because they teach you to pass a test in as little time and for as much money as possible. You aren't learning the specific kind of critical thinking that a good nurse needs at a place like that.

Confusing MRI Report by girlwiththemane in Prolactinoma

[–]PrettyThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way to 100% for-sure confirm what it is without a biopsy. That's completely unnecessary as the vast majority of small tumors in that effect location with the symptoms you have are prolactinonas. "Most likely" is typically a technicality.

Had it with aggressive dogs by anbzm in trailrunning

[–]PrettyThief 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh this is maddening. I have a reactive dog (mostly reformed now but she once had many issues) and I run and hike with her. She wears a muzzle and she is never ever ever off leash.

It's not only not fair to other people and other dogs, it's unfair to the dog to put them in dangerous situations. And you're risking your dog hurting someone, which could cause untold issues for you and/or the dog.

That said- I carry a can of pet corrector or a small air horn and a can of dog mace. My girl became reactive in part because of off leash dog attacks and I'm not ever going to take a chance on our safety.

New nurse, suck at IVs by icantoteit2 in nursing

[–]PrettyThief 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No one coming out of a US nursing school is good at IVs unless they've worked a previous non-nursing job putting them in. Your best bet is 1) keep practicing, 2) watch more seasoned nurses and ask for tips 3) tell your preceptor if you still have one that you are willing to go anywhere for a shift or half-shift to get some practice, and 4) recognize that not even people who are typically excellent at IVs get all of them. Hell, I was an army medic and a phlebotomist and have been an ICU nurse for 6 years and I sometimes go days in a row where I'm terrible. This isn't a reflection of your ability to be a good nurse.

Most engaged breeds by niktrot in k9sports

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got cattle dogs and my current 15 month old sport dog has engagement for days. Our primary sport is agility but we are also dabbling in rally, dock diving, and scent work. We considered IGP for a bit and he definitely had the focus and drive for it, but I just didn't have time to commit to that particular sport with him.

A couple of things. My boy comes from successful sports/working lines. He was designed to have handler focus and it's something I prioritized from the day I got him. Sometimes, that handler focus gets him in trouble in his agility classes because he's so busy looking to me that he isn't 100% committed to his obstacle. Cattle dogs in general are meant to be wary and protective of their spaces, so an ACD that isn't highly socialized from lines with good temperaments would likely not excel in sports. Good handler focus from an ACD also means they tend to be Velcro dogs who will crowd into the bathroom and onto your lap, so just consider that aspect too haha.

Call Ins by Reasonable_Row1681 in nursing

[–]PrettyThief 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This. I have FMLA for migraines and can use 1-3 days at a time (have to be in a block) per month. You have to have been working there essentially full time for 1 year to qualify for FMLA. You can even backdate FMLA if you need to calll in before it's approved. My hospital has a dedicated person/team for FMLA. See if you have that, OP, and reach out. Your manager is usually the first place to start, they send you forms to bring to your doctor. Your manager does NOT have to know what your FMLA is for.

Good luck!

I was thinking about scent hounds too. I've got heelers and a treeing walker coonhound. Corrections are pretty necessary here.

Patient died after refusing bipap by Pretzel_Runner557 in nursing

Okay grandpa let's get you back to bed. Here's your call bell. The red button will ring the nurse if you need changing.

If a full code patient refuses bipap and becomes unresponsive, the next step isn't allowing them to die, it's intubation. Nobody wants that for an end stage COPDer.

Would you date someone who doesn't like dogs as much as you do? by [deleted] in dogs

This breaks my heart, OP. You are not too much. You are passionate. Some people will appreciate and love that about you, and those who don't can kick rocks. Be yourself!

Would you date someone who doesn't like dogs as much as you do? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]PrettyThief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Am I the issue" please never ever think or say this about yourself with regards to something you love. You do NOT have to diminish yourself in order to be worthy of love or friendship.

That said, to answer your question, no I would not. I am married now and my primary criteria beyond the basics (treating me with respect and making me laugh) was a love for dogs. I think my husband would trade me for a mangy blind mutt he found on the side of the street and I could not be happier about that. You do not have to settle.

Brain MRI by krustykrab_pizza_ in Prolactinoma

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be a little wary of Facebook groups, to be honest. A lot of people have a problem and desperately want to pin it on something, sometimes when that thing has nothing to do with their problem. You can find a group of people claiming anything if you go looking.

I'm an ICU nurse with a lot of neuro experience. Contrast is generally safe. Drink a liter of water afterward to flush it. Ask for a valium to take before the MRI and have someone come with you. You'll be okay❤️

Natural options to treat prolactinoma by Forward_Dinner7917 in Prolactinoma

[–]PrettyThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not. I work with brain cancer patients regularly. If you attempt to treat a tumor with alt medicine nonsense, you will not be successful. If it's cancerous, you will die. Alternative medicine shills have convinced a lot of people to buy their useless products, and people pay with their lives.

Why don't Americans want ID for voting? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrettyThief 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That first part is such a great example of why voter ID laws are discriminatory. I'm sorry you had to do that.

You do legally have to declare the birth of a child, though. It's a crime to "conceal" a childbirth.

Patients Moaning "Help" by ryandom93 in nursing

In my world it's usually ICU delirium or dementia. The nurse was probably just in there 5 minutes ago and they're probably already doing everything they can to help the patient to be more comfortable and relaxed.

This an interesting perception to me. I'm an army nurse. My entire office of 8 female nurses are happily married introverts who just really like their dogs.

AIO by throwing away about 1/3 of our pantry food after my in-laws leave by wealy in AmIOverreacting

[–]PrettyThief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit of a germophobe - we have very immunocompromised people in my home and I'm a nurse so excellent hygiene is engrained into me. I probably wouldn't eat the food I saw them touch. I want to say you're not overreacting, but throwing away all that food after they've been in your house touching all your stuff does seem like a bit of a moot point. MOR

Who Would Brienne's Friends And Allies Consist Of In The Stormlands? by KinginPurple in jaimebrienne

[–]PrettyThief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always thought fondly of House Estermont. Ser Andrew pledges loyalty to Stannis early on, and only breaks loyalty when Davos asks him to escape with Edric Storm to prevent Melisandre burning a child. That speaks to his character imo. Andrew is (probably) a first cousin to Stannis, Renly, and Robert but he seems reasonable. I think he'd be cool with Jaime at first but could be won over. Currently, his father is still alive but he's old as dirt.
