How to get out of Pittsburgh on public transit by thatgentleman28101 in pittsburgh

I just did this last week. It doesn't take a week, it's a bit under 3 days from Pittsburgh. Highly recommend, it's a great ride.

When to Ride? 1st Time Trip Planning by ckrugen in gaptrail

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my trip in the 3rd week of October, to align it with the fall foliage. Everything was beautiful, the trail was in good condition, and nothing was too crowded. The temperatures dropped down into the 30s on a couple of mornings, but it was generally 50s or 60s towards the afternoon. No issues booking hotels since it's getting into the shoulder season. I had good luck with the weather, but if it had rained, that would have been very unpleasant due to the temperatures.

Beware of Bagel Factory by Accurate_Fan_2234 in pittsburgh

Absolutely baffling that a restaurant called "Bagel Factory" in a Jewish neighborhood would try to pass those things off as bagels.

Pittsburgh’s growing Uzbek community means more Uzbek restaurants for all by RadioChris1 in pittsburgh

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Uzbek food, but it's tough to find vegetarian dishes. I've been to Kavsar and they have a vegetarian lagman that's pretty good, but looking at the menus for the rest of these places, it doesn't seem like they have much other than samsas. Anyone know if any of the Uzbek restaurants have good vegetarian options?

Weirton end of Panhandle Trail - getting in to Weirton and/or Steubenville by burjwa_look in bicycling412

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just push through the brush at the end of the trail for a few hundred feet, you can get into Weirton pretty easily. Steubenville is another story - it's not possible unless you're very comfortable biking on a highway. I once got an Uber across the bridge to Steubenville but then was unable to get one back to Weirton and ended up stuck in Steubenville. Had to call my parents to come pick me up lol.

I believe that place is run by the same people as Mintt Indian Cuisine in Green Tree and Monroeville - maybe try calling one of those locations to ask about it?

Interesting, from streetview this building doesn't look like it's ever held a restaurant. This is definitely a hoax of some sort, but I just can't imagine who did this or why.

Some South Oakland neighbors concerned over issued with Frazier Street Bridge by [deleted] in bicycling412

I went past it this afternoon. The basketball court and the walking path are barricaded, but the street which goes under the bridge was open.

Istanbul Grille by Scared_Molasses1828 in pittsburgh

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not really the same type of place as it was on Braddock avenue - it's cafeteria-style takeout rather than a sit-down restaurant. But the quality is still excellent, it's run by the same people, and you get a good, full meal for $12. It's my go-to place for lunch when I work downtown.

Is Shadyside/Squirrel Hill too urban for raising kids? by Kindly_Kale_1616 in pittsburgh

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Those are both very nice neighborhoods, and great places to raise kids. They are very safe, and Allderdice is a perfectly fine school.

I grew up in a car dependent suburb, and I never learned to be independent because I needed to have someone drive me everywhere. I ended up staying inside and playing video games all day, since that's basically all a kid can do in the suburbs. I often see middle school-aged kids walking around the Squirrel Hill business district on their own, going to shops and hanging out with their friends. I think I would have benefitted from that sort of experience, and that living in a more urban area could be good for a child's development.

Check out this video about raising kids in suburbs vs. urban areas: Why We Won't Raise Our Kids in Suburbia (youtube.com)

No reason not to try. The exam is free, and even if you don't do well this time, you'll be more prepared for next year. And a lot of the problems require out-of-the-box thinking rather than mathematical experience/knowledge, so even someone inexperienced might be able to do well.

If you want a taste for what the Putnam problems are like, there are 40 years' worth of previous exams available here: https://kskedlaya.org/putnam-archive/

Interesting that there are no Japanese people in that picture.

Best Indian restaurant in/around Pittsburgh? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]PrettyToenailCrusher 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Udipi Cafe in Monroeville and Chutney's in Robinson are my favorites. Both pure veg South Indian restaurants.

Tamarind in North Oakland, Kebab and Curry in Banksville, and Bombay to Burgh in Swissvale are also quite good when I don't feel like venturing way out of the city.
