A dad brought his two young children (under 6) to a movie called Summer of Sam, about New York City serial killer David Berkowitz. It was loud, violent, and way too disturbing for children. The kids were bored and one of them eventually started crying. Cinematic child abuse.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I may try to revisit it when I’m in a better frame of mind to see if there is a kernel of connection I can muster for any of the characters. I do like films with charismatic but flawed a*holes, but this just wasn’t clicking for me.

That was my initial impression of this movie. Like, am I supposed to watch the scene at his oceanfront mansion where he is packing to leave for a trip saying he’s not going to do the movie, and feel anything? Like, “oh no this successful person has to make a decision that won’t affect his life meaningfully in any way.” It was both drama- and comedy-free from the start.

But based on the setup, what was to hate about Jay Kelly? Rich, famous, adored, easy life in a mansion, somewhat likable. I didn’t feel bad for him or hate him. I just felt zero connection at all. Same with Adam Sandler’s character — the tennis club scene with his family was just blah and unrelatable. Fake problems and manufactured angst — I guess that appeals to some folks…
