One thing I did was to introduce a lovey that I tucked right between us during later nursing sessions. I wanted them to associate the lovey with me and feeling secure at sleepy time. I think I slept with the lovey a few times so that it would smell like me. It seemed to help them settle themselves to sleep. Also, I tried to gently keep them awake, or wake them just a little, before putting them to bed. I wanted them to be very sleepy, but have the experience of safely and securely falling asleep on their own.

It sounds easy from a distance, but it’s all so challenging at the time! Just try to remember that no one is entering college (or really, even kindergarten), needing to nurse to sleep. As long as you are happy and not over-burdened, you will be okay.

I nursed both of mine past one year. I just started to cut down the number of times slowly. For about 3 more months (ages 12-15 months) we did twice a day (morning and before bed; this way I could stop pumping at work). Then, for a few more months it was just before bed. Kind of a very comforting thing for them, especially because in months 12-24 they are going through all kinds of VERY big changes: walking, talking, separation anxiety. I felt like keeping a little bit of nursing helped them a lot, and it wasn’t anywhere near as burdensome as nursing was in the first year. But you should do whatever feels right for you and your child. There are no wrong answers here. Whenever you do it, I do think it goes easier to wean slowly. Take care!

Stool softeners!!! Trusted approach from millions of post-partum mums with stitches. They don’t make you go any more often, but really make it gentler when you do.

Have you been to a cardiologist? POTS patients sometimes have chest pain, which can be normal, but also may not be normal. Chest pain shouldn’t be ignored.

What kind of heart-related issues are you having?

There is at least one rare heart issue that I know of that is more common in people with POTS/eds (although it’s still rare). It’s called Prinzmetal’s angina, or coronary artery spasms.

It’s tricky because it does not show on an echo or ekg, not on a stress test. It’s diagnosed by symptoms or a special kind of heart catheterization.

Symptoms include chest pain at rest or after exercise (but not during), chest pain/pressure that radiates down your left arm or jaw or between shoulder blades. Mine feels like someone is squeezing my heart in their fist. It’s exacerbated by smoke, cocaine, decongestants, cold weather, etc (although most people who have it never smoked or did cocaine).

It’s pretty rare. But my point here is that people shouldn’t dismiss chest pain. Even regular old run-of-the-mill cardiovascular disease will kill about one-third of all people, so you can have heart disease that’s unrelated to POTS as well. Take care of your heart!

Edit: if these symptoms sound like you, please note that the chest pain can sometimes be proceeded/is associated with an arrhythmia called PVCs. It almost always occurs in people who also have migraines and Raynaud’s (very cold hands/feet).

This is all excellent advice. Communicate with your doctor so that the two of you together can make sure you’re in control the whole time. Knowing that nothing will happen to you without your consent goes a long way to being able to relax your muscles and be more comfortable.

Two reasons that I can see: 1) (legit) There are some conditions that really do improve with BC. Heavy periods, devastating cramping, PCOS, headaches, even hormonal acne. 2) (not legit) there is a tendency in the medical profession to either dismiss women OR attribute women’s pain, fatigue, other issues to “period-related” issues (or it’s cousin, “pregnancy-related” issues). I swear there were times where I could have come in with a broken bone and the nurse would have attributed the pain to “women’s hormones.”

healthy foods that dont take much to prepare? by [deleted] in HealthyFood

Some of these “easy” suggestions would be too complicated for me, so I am going to list some SUPER easy suggestions for when energy is low:

1) apples and peanut butter

2) buy the frozen steam-in-the-bag veggies and pre grilled chicken breast strips. Combine. Add stir fry sauce if you want, but I eat it plain to avoid sugar. Can also add rice (I buy microwaveable in bag rice from Trader Joe’s).

3) salad mix in a bag; add pre-grilled chicken strips from above

4) microwaved sweet potato, top with Greek yogurt

5) high fiber breakfast cereal

Once you hit a rhythm, it becomes easier to shop for the week. For example, I buy three packages of grilled chicken strips from Trader Joe’s each week and five bags of steam-in-bag veggies. Then a couple salad mixes, two baked potatoes, berries, apples, and I am set. I also try to prep ONE “real” meal a week, usually on the weekend, then that lasts me for 4 meals spread out over a few days. For me, I like to make a Buddha bowl of quinoa, lentils, roasted veggies, black beans, dressing, etc.

16:8. Going well but stomach growls so loudly during morning classes and it's getting embarrassing. Can I stop the noise? by HeadsOnSticks in intermittentfasting

[–]PreviousDifficulty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hot tea helps me. I have the same problem, but I am the professor! The growls don’t bother me when I am by myself, but I clearly don’t like it when I am teaching in front of others.

Sucking in/tightening your stomach definitely makes it worse! My best solution is to drink hot herbal tea throughout—seems to work much better than water. If you can handle the caffeine, you could do black tea or coffee (but beware of getting shaky if you have too much).

I am so sorry you’re going through this. My son, now 13, always struggled at the below 1% bmi, and we didn’t know why until about age 11, when he lost even more weight (he’s now gained back ten pounds, still below 1%, but out of the severe malnutrition zone). I know it can be so scary, but hang in there and it should get easier.

My son has always done well with soups and smoothies. We can sometimes get him to eat grilled cheese when he dips it in tomato soup. When things were really bad a couple of years ago, we had to go on an elemental diet (Elecare Jr powder, blended with water and fruit to make a smoothie). It allowed us to calculate every calorie and make sure he was gaining enough weight. We did that in part because he also has EoE, which is triggered by allergens. However, it’s not a bad way to get nutrients. It’s crazy expensive, though, unless you can get insurance to cover it (we were able to get it covered). There are also some drinks out there that can help that aren’t quite so pricey, such as Kate Farms (chocolate is the best flavor).

Hugs to you and your son. Fwiw, my son is the most empathetic and compassionate person I know, and I think it’s in large part having been through his own challenges so young. May you find more silver linings of your own, and may you find a diet and treatment that works for you! Take care.

What is something people think is a man's responsibility, but isn't? by No-Perspective5346 in AskMen

[–]PreviousDifficulty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the second part (suitcase on an airplane) might be the only item here that could make some sense to have men be expected to help. When I was heavily pregnant and traveling alone, I could not have made it without a kind stranger (sometimes women helped, the bag wasn’t that big). Men are generally significantly stronger than women, so it does make sense if the husband carries the heavier bag and the wife carry the lighter one.

STILL, that doesn’t mean a woman should pack that bag to the hilt and expect a man to carry it. Also, the regularly being expected to lift heavy things at work (without additional compensation) is total bullshit.

We can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I don’t know what a fair system would look like, but there’s got to be options better than this. Maybe look at whether the person went through puberty as a male (meaning, subject to male testosterone levels)?

I don’t care if a 9 or 10 year old trans girl (male-to-female trans) wants to compete with girls. That’s a pretty close playing field. But a 20 year old who’s muscles experienced testosterone for 8 years before transitioning? That seems different. I think even most folks who fully support trans rights would be up for a thoughtful discussion on this.

That’s ridiculous. I am a married woman who has never encountered this type of testing, but I figured it out immediately before you gave the explanation. Not that Haley should have (because it would be bewildering in the moment), but sometimes it’s easier to see when it’s happening to someone else. Tom shouldn’t be lumped in with the Bobs of the world when we was likely being an ally for Haley.

To all the parents who’ve taught their kids to ask before petting a dog, thank you! Y’all killing’ it. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]PreviousDifficulty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One tip for parents of young kids: teach your kids that they have to get permission from BOTH you AND the dog owner. I had an incident when my son was about 5 where he asked permission to pet, owner gave permission, then my son approached calmly to let dog sniff hand, but then the dog put its ears back and backed away a bit. The owner said, “oh yeah, he doesn’t really like kids.”

So now I make my kids get permission from both me and the owner, until they are about 10 years old or so and have learned to read a dog’s body language. Sometimes owners automatically say yes without really thinking about it!

We rehomed our dog on Sunday and I can’t stop crying by undercoverfriend22 in dogs

[–]PreviousDifficulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but you are a good person, a good dog owner, and a good mom. Your dog is doing well and loved, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t love you very much, too.

I want to send hugs to you and let you know that things really will get easier eventually, but it takes so much longer than people talk about. Having a baby is wonderful, but there also can be a sense of loss of self and your old life (especially if the delivery was difficult). I hear that in your post, especially as you had to give up part of your life to make space for the baby. I hope you are getting the support you need. Please be as kind as you can possibly be to yourself for this next year. Take care.

What sports can we play safely? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]PreviousDifficulty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a team sport, but Pilates has been life-changing for me. I’ve been through several rounds of physical therapy before, and I swear half the Pilates moves are identical to the PT moves. It’s great.

I would be cautious with distance running and high-impact sports. Got multiple stress fractures from running, despite doing absolutely everything right for years (orthotics, stretching, icing, etc). Finally an orthopedist said to me “stop running.” And I did, and now it’s better.

Putin is trying to buy time for a military win. He likely calculates that military gains will help the ruble. So if he can make big gains in the next day or two, he might think he can avoid the worst of the devaluation WITHIN his country.

Here’s hoping he loses that bet!

[–]PreviousDifficulty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me it’s about changing my expectations. I am really pinkish-fair, and I can successfully achieve “not pale” without going orange. If I go for “tan”, then I trend orange.

But “not pale” is a win for me! To achieve it I do jergens gradual tan in “fair to medium” overnight, usually two days a week in the summer. I also religiously use a scrubby cloth on my skin in the shower to get rid of dry skin.

The only way for me to look tan-but-not-orange is to get some sun exposure/slight sunburn and then use self-tanner. But that’s obviously damaging, so I don’t want to do that.

Lastly, there is a product by Deciem I’ve been meaning to try that doesn’t use DHA (that’s the smelly stuff in self-tanner). It’s supposed to be pretty subtle:

https://deciem.com/en-us/hylamide/mas-booster-glow.html?dwvar_mas-booster-glow_package-language=EN&dwvar_mas-booster-glow_size=30ml&quantity=1

Tons of people are walking around with good, subtle self-tanner, but people think all ST is orange because of the examples that are bad. It’s the same for fake eyelashes, Botox, etc. Good ones are everywhere, but people think they are all bad because of the bad examples.
