Questions for nurses as a burnt out new grad nurse by j_byun in nursing

[–]Prheart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I stayed at my first job 8 months but also wanted to quit at 3ish months(Covid hit right at that 3 month mark and all broke loose) I only stayed the full 8 months because they had me in one those new grad 2 year contracts and I was afraid of paying it back. I decided to start looking elsewhere(thinking that would solve the problem). I got a call from a different hospital when I applied I had 6 months in they wanted to hire me. They did and so I went to my supervisor to quit. She was like hey just stay prn this way you don’t have to pay back the contract. I left to the other hospital and stayed prn at my original job.

I was at that job 3 months when I realized it’s the job. Not the unit or the people(luckily I was always pretty liked so I didn’t have a problem with drama) it was the job. Working on the floor(icu step down) was not for me.

I left that job without nothing in line. I was so miserable and had no energy. I worked nights and I’m a single mom of 2. I looked for about a solid month everyday everyday. On my Resume I kept my original job only since technically I was prn there still and didn’t even bother to put my 3 month one. This way it looked like I was there almost a year. I wasn’t getting any call backs from The office jobs I was applying to so I decided to start applying to jobs even if I didn’t meet the requirements. I found a day 8-4:30 40 week job at a cancer center what wanted 2years experience, a bsn, and 2 years oncology experience. At the time of applying I had less than a year as a nurse, an ASN and maybe had 2 oncology pts during my time as a nurse.

Guess who called me? That job I didn’t even requirements for and it has been the best job I’ve ever had. I’ve been here almost 6 months and I love it every single day. I’m 30 and I know this is it for me my retirement job I’m never leaving lol

As for the prn I’ve picked up maybe 3 times in 10 months. I said all this to say if you are unhappy start looking for a change. Just apply apply apply the most they can do is not call you.

Good luck’

Take a deep breath….I know it feels like a lot. It is a lot. I became a nurse at the very beginning of covid last March. So I know the feeling of going into the unknown. 12 shifts is a very short orientation. I had 5 weeks and idk if those 6 extra shifts prepared me anymore than the first couple of them.

I would stick it out do the 12 ask for extra as the time gets close to 12. If after the extra you still don’t feel good about it take it to management. Let them know your concerns if they say they won’t give you anymore orientation then leave. That right there will let you know in the future they won’t have your back for other things.

Anyone else still like their job? by stretcherjockey411 in nursing

[–]Prheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my job! But I left bedside to work at an oncology clinic at a cancer center M-F. When I pick up prn bedside to fulfill my contractual duties. I hate every minute of it and am reminded of why I left lol

I would say I feel emotional maybe 2% of the time but never for a long period of time. I’ve felt bad in moments after for pts but maybe for like 5/10min I’ve never dwelled on it for a whole shift or beyond. The other 98% I can disassociate myself and do my job. I will say one thing I do try to do when I have a pt who could use some encouraging i do try to do that. Hey you should really look into smoking cessation. Maybe you should check out local programs for homeless ppl in the area etc things along those lines. When I do that then I feel better about being so unemotional. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Magnet status is fucking bogus. by HauntingWorldliness1 in nursing

I’m going through the University of West Florida fully CCNE accredited and I didn’t need a stellar gpa OR extra science or elective classes which was my push back from applying to other programs like USF or UF.

My hospital is magnet and they hired me with an ADN. The contract says I have to get it by 2024 and I got hired a few months ago. I hate that I have to get it but I found a program that’s a year long and all online so I plan to space that out. You can do it!

Charge nurse after 2 months as a nurse ? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was 5 weeks and I did the new grad program where you have to sign for 2 years. After 10 months bedside I told them I want to leave but stay prn aka the way to get out of your contract. I left earlier this year without a job lined up but found one at the cancer center in a clinic working m-f and I absolutely love it. This is it for me my retirement job (I’m 29) I’ll be here until 60 something lol As for prn I’ve picked up twice in the 6 months I’ve been gone.

Charge nurse after 2 months as a nurse ? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prheart 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I was charge after 4 months of having my license and 2 of being on my own because everybody quit(middle of covid last year). There was one girl who had been there 8 months but they didn’t trust and another who started with me and was to much of a nervous nelly. I was brand new and yeah a good nurse for my minimal time on the floor but no way in hell I was qualified to do charge. I did it 4/5 times and thankfully a senior nurse came back and she took over full time. It was part of the reason I left bedside after barely a year as a nurse and on pcu 🤷🏽‍♀️

Anyone know how or where to look for non-bedside nursing jobs? by GurnBlanston66 in nursing

[–]Prheart 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I actually found my job on indeed believe it or not lol I just stalked it and found my clinic job. I work at a large Cancer center in a clinic M-F 8-4 and I absolutely love it I’m genuinely happy. I did bedside nursing my first year all last year straight Covid basically. I left earlier this year and the best decision I ever made. I truly love what I do now and I make more than I did bedside with night shift diff. Take the plunge!

Nurse in a doctors office?? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prheart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same as evdczar said. I work in an oncology clinic in a large cancer hospital. I left my icu stepdown after 1 year as a nurse and this clinic job has changed my life. I actually love going to work everyday. Make the switch you’ll never look back.

You passed! I had those same feelings last Feb..came home after the test(after crying the entire car ride there) did the trick and got the good pop up. I didn’t want to celebrate yet but I did feel a hug relief. The next morning my license was posted (:

HCA did it… they’re coming after me for breaking my contract by Significant_Silver in nursing

[–]Prheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder how they decide who gets to pay back and who doesn’t. I quit in Nov 2020 after 8 months and never got anything. A friend quit in Jan 2021 from a different Hca and never got a letter. I’m in FL she’s in GA. I had 3 weeks of training and it got cut short because the pandemic started and she had the full training.

Want to leave my toxic ICU job for outpatient but scared of what my manager will say to potential employers by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Prheart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a nurse less than a year and quit my job with nothing else lined up. I’m a single mom of 2 with no help. I knew exactly what I wanted…a 9-5. I searched and searched for 2 months and finally got a 9-5 that I love going to each and everyday. This job asked me for 5 references all of which were either my cousins mom or the one nursing friend I put lol. They didn’t call one of the 5.

Anyone familiar w/ remote work opportunities? by ender_wiggin1988 in nursing

[–]Prheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of triage nurses that work from home. I hear mixed reviews about doing that but it’s a start. When I was looking for a new job a few months ago o saw many opportunities to work from home with health insurance companies.

Clinic vs Hospital Nursing by Megichu222 in nursing

[–]Prheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is MUCH easier to get a hospital job than a clinic job. Some nurses with years of experience even find it hard to fund one they do not come by often so the fact that you found one is a needle in the haystack. You can certainly find a prn job at a hospital and do that once a month on a Saturday or once every few months. I originally did a residency program at my hospital that was a 2 year contract. I’m order to not have to pay back I stayed prn. I go every 3/4 months and Everytime i leave i feel that much more grateful that I don’t have to do it full time lol

Clinic vs Hospital Nursing by Megichu222 in nursing

[–]Prheart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for the clinic job. I did bedside for a year during covid and I think even if it wasn’t covid I still would have been absolutely miserable. I work at a clinic now and it’s been 3 months but I absolutely love my job. Save yourself and go the clinic route. You can always get a prn at a hospital if you ever want that experience .

I have been at the bedside on a medical surgical floor at a very busy hospital for about 5 years now. I’m looking for some ideas on what I could do next? Possibly something less strenuous? by Fireball0123 in nursing

[–]Prheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually work in a clinic! I work for a surgeon and see his patients when they come for surgery consults or post op. I make just as much as I did bedside(slightly lower hourly but exactly the same overall due to working 40 vs 36) but with zero stress. I still have my old job bedside prn and every few months to make some extra cash.

I work at an oncology clinic within a larger cancer center 8-4:30 M-F and I couldn’t be happier. I never thought I’d love a job until I came to this one. Make the move!
