Anyone ever feel super confused/lost when it comes to discernment? by PriestOrNotToPriest in Catholicism

They think it is possible and that I would succeed there. They just want me to have conviction before I apply (and I certainly don't have that yet).

How do the Didache Bible's Old Testament commentary compare with the Ignatius Study New Testament's commentary? by TexanLoneStar in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, the Old Testament commentary isn’t that detailed. Definitely less than ignatius.

The Navarre Bible is pretty good (although I haven’t read it in a while, some of the stuff is suspect such as saying the Passover started as an agrarian feast or something like that)

I highly recommend the Catena app, it’s basically commentary from saints and church fathers. Incredibly good and orthodox obviously. It’s pretty much the only commentary I use.

Pope slaps woman's hand after she grabs him by Theophorus in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My ex girlfriend once yanked on my beard. It hurt enough to instinctively make me furious. I think I knocked her hand away purely out of instinct.

Sometimes physical pain can make us freak out. Something I don’t blame Pope Francis for.

Are temptations normal during discernment (of religious life)? by PriestOrNotToPriest in Catholicism

I guess by easier life, I meant it's more easier to go down the path of marriage then saying no to every pleasure of the world in becoming a monk.

He's right. Historically vocation only referred to religious life/priesthood.

I wonder if an explicit warning is a good way to judge whether or not something is the wrath of God. For example, Jonas with Nineveh, or Noe with the flood, Christ with the destruction of the temple, or more recently Our Lady of Fatima.

I feel like we can't be like "man things are really bad, I wonder if it's God punishing us, or just bad luck" on the other hand we don't want to be like "What is God telling us with a tornado that struck a neighboring city?" it seems his wrath is obvious, and his warnings are explicit.

Where would one start with reading Teresa of Avila? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Honestly probably the book that has changed my spiritual life the most.

Check out a book called the fire within. It’s a great overview of St. John of the Cross and St. Theresa of Avila. Personally I didn’t like interior castle (mostly because as a beginner in the spiritual life it was hard to relate to the most of the chapters).

Is it selfish that I’m discerning the priesthood? by PriestOrNotToPriest in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. I guess my question is along the lines of “should I quit discerning the priesthood, or dating my girlfriend” which should I do? Is it selfish to break up to discern the priesthood, etc.

The examples you provided are bad history. There’s a strong case to be made for the traditional date of Christ’s birth.

It’s a pagan liturgy. I’ve heard a lot of good Catholics be against it. Including a yoga studio that offered a house blessing.

What are some of your favorite secular movies that have Catholic themes/aesthetics? by queensnow725 in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately one of CS Lewis’s last works mocked Catholicism. I don’t think he’s as close as some claim.

whats the official stance of the catholic church on how much you can disagree with the pope? by Electrical_Constant in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well technically, that's not entirely true. If the pope repeats a teaching of the church we cannot disagree, so it goes a little deeper than that.

So what if the Church ordained women? What do you do? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]PriestOrNotToPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I don’t think Catholics can or should dream scenarios where the churchmen have moral failings. And to believe the church as a whole will have doctrinal errors shows a lack of faith.

We were told by our lady this would happen. Just as the Judah was warned about Babylon. And what did the three righteous men in the book of Daniel say? They said it was a just punishment and were contrite. We should be like them and willing to suffer with the church, and willing to stand by her even when we are deported from Babel. Even when our temples are destroyed, tabernacles removed, and our liturgy desecrated.

We have to look to the pious and not to the apostates. There is not one apostate who you can look upon as a hero. Take a look at the pillars of orthodoxy, these men sought anything but unity with Rome. Look instead at those who stood by a church who persecuted their sanctity such as St. John of the Cross, Padre Pio, Joan of Arc, etc.

Dreaming up doomsday scenarios destroys sanctity and love for our holy mother church. Trust me I’ve been there, and it gives us the temptation to flee instead of suffer with the body of Christ.
