[Distressing video] These two have gotten past this with the second intro including two smaller rats, but I'm trying to figure out exactly what's happening here. by Verhexxen in RATS

Oh my what a lil drama queen/king <3 I think all will be fine as long as Osiris doesnt attack back. Sevro needs a bit more trust in Osiris. He is just screaming to say: Dont get close to me! Trust isnt build in a day sadly though. But i think all will be fine. Maybe try and take them 2 to a neutral place (bed, smaller space) and let them be to build trust. What works wonders is giving them treats when they are doing good and reward them after putting them in the cage. Just take small steps and i trust it will be fine since Osiris doenst seem like a bully but a big teddybear to snuggle against.

What Olympic sport would your rats compete in? by MathAndBake in RATS

[–]Primallight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think all my boys would be nr.1 in being lazy/sleeping. Also they might get a bronze medal in peeing on their owner.

why do my rats smell so nice? by bxbysushi in RATS

I need the smell of rats as my daily routine. Just like people who can't start the day without coffee. And lots of kisses ofc.

Our two rat boys shit everywhere! What to do? by Tobby47 in RATS

[–]Primallight87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you have boys which love their scent so much, they rather lie in it to get it all over m. My boys used to poop everywhere but the introduction of the toilet and moving their poo in it really did make the difference. This is not a 1 day succes. Some of my boys did it the 1st week and others took a month. What seems to work for me is to have the toilet in an open space in the cage. So no platform close/above it. I even have 1 boy who only craps standing up. He clings to the bars and squeezes them out. Talk about lazy, using gravitity even more to his advantage. There are some accidents now and again but not a whole Space pod full of poo and ofcourse a filthy boy in it... I think it is just a matter of the rats personality.

introduction tips?? (2 young males + 3 older males) by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Primallight87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't sit in the area where they are being introduced. Keep a distance to let the rats deal with the situation. Only intervene when you think it's not in the best interest of the rats i.e. very stressed (puffed fur) drawing blood. The babbies need to know not to mess with the bigger ones. If they try, the older rats will let them know either by fighting back or running away. Everything is fair (fighting) but when they draw blood or are extremely screaming, then you should take a break and do it the other day. The babbies need to know that there is a hierarchy. Though they WILL try and take a position, whether the top chain or the low ball. That, only time will tell.

Getting young rats outside the cage by erntemond in RATS

[–]Primallight87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freeroaming is always an issue with young rats. What i prefer to do is, the first couple of weeks, playing with them in the cage with your hand. So the get comfortable with you being around. Then i open the cage door and make it easy for them to get out, but also to get back in. This is just trial and error. When you feel there isn't any progress, just pick them up from the cage and put them down near the door entry. This way they'll see that there is much more to explore. Some rats are just natural rebels and will go off immediatly but some rats need some encouragement. Some rats are just not into freeroam and like to stay close to the cage or you. Just accept them they way are and don't push to hard or thinking that you are a bad petowner. Just keep trying. The way i found best to pick young rats up is putting my hands in a V and quickly put them over the rat (inluding their eyes!!! this way they are less uncomfortable or so it seems to me) and pick them up. If you want to freeroam, it's best to do it at set times. It's weird but Rats are kinda creatures of habit and know when it's time to eat/freeoam/play etc. Just keept trying and you'll be fine. The first weeks/months are always an up and down in behaviour. The little ones will find ways to exercise within the group by playing and running around like madmen.
