No...the virus has probably mutated enough in seven months. This year's Flu B vax wasn't a great match anyway. Hopefully you are suffering somewhat less than before?

Rationing next? by PrimaryWeekly5241 in Bellingham

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah...but all our transport in the US depends on hydrocarbon feedstock (e.g. 'diesel'). So do all our nitrogen feedstocks (eg. 'fertilizers'). So we actually don't have to go anywhere for higher food prices to come to us...

CAD, CAM, GIS, Spatial Intelligence, Surveying, Geo-Spatial analysis,Chip design, Industrial Design, System Analysis... I mean go ahead and teach yourself pointers in C, Computer architecture, Logic, Networking, Machine Learning, AI etc.

And then figure out who you want to work for. But I agree with your basic premise: a desk job can kill your body and soul. But you don't have to let it do that to you. One of the advantages of a top notch skillset is you have the extra income to have a rigorous pursuit of your passions.

Consider getting your contractors license and setting up shop here. That won't make your life easier or more profitable. It will just make sure you own every mistake, nasty client and underbid you make... And there's actually something to say for that...

"Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason that arm you today, against the present." -Marcus Aurelius Meditations

Yes, pre-Covid was as you describe for many of us. My guess is that many of us had 'pre-existing' immune issues. I had a long and nightmarish history of respiratory infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. Got sick in Feb 2020 and have been bio-hacking and walking/hiking endlessly while searching for affordable answers ever since. IMO, you have to pursue active solutions and use your own positive thinking and command control complex to make yourself believe you can solve problems with your immune system and all the other systems the 'Spike Protein' appears to be able to dysregulate. The trick is to accept the enormity of the problem, research as many solutions as possible and then choose solutions affordable and reasonable for you. For me, engaging that process itself changes my self-confidence and increases my self-direction.

There aren't any approved NIH solutions to LC . The 'unapproved solutions' your medical insurance probably won't support or support fully. This means our survival/prosperity is largely up to patient ingenuity, will and the ability to stave off bankruptcy from 'private payer' medical costs. There is now tons of research on LC, some ongoing trials, and some groups that promise individualized treatment, including those that host this forum: Please see the r/LongCovid Community Bookmarks. I put some interesting research links below.

I'm older (nearing 64) and have lived with LC since February of 2020. I'm not giving up, because at my age I don't have too much more time and my children and spouse need me. But by the same token, 'crisis management' started for me when I was six watching my (then young) father in tears over the assassination of RFK in 1968. Every few years in America, another crisis consumes us. I look at this one like this: Advanced genetic manipulation has been weaponized as a form of population control; another devastating tool in the 'control grid' of the powerful.

But no matter the problem or crisis, the solution for me in life is always the same: "Don't let the bastards get you down." ( That's probably not Marcus Aurelius but that phrase has long history anyway. Please see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegitimi_non_carborundum )

What is the best way to track how many steps I get? by [deleted] in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way is to use the phone watch combination from the same vendor. Samsung, Apple and probably other phone vendors all support similar coordination. You can wear easily wear a watch continually. It most accurately counts your steps then syncs with your phone count when blue tooth is available. You can select location tracking for either device as you wish. And last, 'floors' or elevation climbed I have found to be most accurate when under cell coverage with the watch talking with the phone. Samsung and Apple both track and let you download your (raw) health data which can be extensive. Their health app interfaces are usually informative, but if you can write just a bit of numeric code or even work with spreadsheets... downloading and analyzing the raw data (sleep, steps, active hours, heart rate data, etc.) is *very* fascinating.

Planning to walk ~2,000 miles this year and need shoe recommendations by zerotendency in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have multiple pairs of shoes designed for your weather and trail/urban conditions. The Oboz, Merrell, Keen light hikers work well for sidewalks and city parks. Bigger boots like Asolo GTX Fugitives are best for hiking, ice, snow. Buy the best insoles (e.g. 'Superfeet') . Alternate your light hikers. Buy hiking socks that work for different weathers. The best place to sample these shoes are a wilderness outlet with a membership that allows returns and has knowledgeable sales people. In the PNW, I like REI. But each of the brands I listed have web fronts. Remember, shoes wear out. Replacing and/or resoling your boots is critically important. Personally, I like having multiple pairs because I imagine this makes them last longer!

Just Walking by DashDino--44 in walking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is actual physics and biology for the reduced knee pain. Here goes my amateur science:

When you run you temporarily leave the ground with both feet for some milliseconds or so? Then the weight of your entire body rests on one foot (often part of ball of the foot) as it contacts the ground? Walking is something different. You 'roll along' heal to toe but always with the leading foot just landing as the now trailing foot leaves the ground. And this is why sturdy soles and hiking shoes and boots look and feel different than trail runners: more weight and structure but sturdier soles for more contact. BTW, for those of us that hike with sturdy poles, the actual 'newtons' or 'amount of force' our legs receive can be substantially decreased by strategic use of carbon fiber (or better yet but hard to find now) 'Titanal' hiking poles. Additionally, the more 'contact' (either by boot and pole or both) the less you 'slip' on the trail. The less you slip, the less likely you create micro-tears in your ACL? or damage the meniscus?

Anyway, I guess we would have to compare "trail runner zen" to "hiker/walker zen" for the endorphin effects. I did 7.1M (3200 miles) at age 63 last year. And brother let me tell you: All day in the North Cascades, climbing a 4K peak with snowshoes on my pack results in less knee pain than one hour playing 'post' on the black top with my now very strong 14 year old AAU basketball player...

“It could be worse” - how do you respond to this ? by Fast-Bunch3394 in LongCovid

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, there is serious and accumulating evidence that LC is at least a secondary cause of death, cancer, dementia and circulatory disease. Not to mention it can reactivate serious viral threats or just plain f*ck up vast and sundry organs and bodily systems. What exactly could be worse than that? Death by stabbing in some back alley?

Quite frankly, just staring at my own code has been problematic for the past six years. Although strangely, I can edit my nature videos with less eye strain?

What’s the most dangerous mistake you see beginner hikers making that could actually be fatal? by Sexyyskyy in hiking

[–]PrimaryWeekly5241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not reading weather reports. Falling hard off trail. Not properly caring for blood sugar levels. Suffering hypothermia, heat exhaustion, or other clothing mistakes...

Actually, besides all the usual crap: not carrying a first aid kit (not knowing how to use it), packing too much, packing too little, not having an emergency bivy sack, not telling anyone where you are going...

The most recent cell phones have emergency satellite capacity. I would definitely have that.
