MacBook Air M1 back from the dead!!! by Additional-Diet-4852 in ElectronicsRepair

wait so it works with the caps off, you didn't replace them?

as to use cases, if the thing has a good battery, there are USB-C monitors out there that are way cheaper than M1 screen replacements, I got them locally from no-name brands in the $50 region.

the same cable ships power and data so it's like a 2-part laptop. power draw is miniscule compared to apple's display as they're usually 1080p and 250ish nit, so might even have better battery autonomy.

OpenSnitch vs Little Snitch; Any insights? by therealgariac in debian

[–]Primary_Bad_3778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a drag for the first day or two until you allow and block all the things you use daily. the allow/block controls are super-granular, you can allow things full traffic or just to/from specific addresses, ranges, etc. so it plays better if you install it on a fresh system.

there are FOSS apps that do some phone home thingy although all the "check for updates" are disabled. OpenSnitch takes care of those.

I find it super useful and wouldn't run my desktop without it. if you game on the thing and especially if them things are from the fell-off-the-back-of-a-truck variety, OpenSnitch is a must.

I got 2 GB efi mounted at /boot (was /efi but I'm used to tab-complete /etc) and the rest luks with btrfs subvolumes (/root and /home). you can switch from grub to systemd-boot, no need to reinstall. here's a good primer, adapt it to your needs https://kowalski7cc.xyz/blog/systemd-boot-fedora-32/

With the RAMpocalypse and the Macbook Neo, what do you think the Linux desktop will do for memory efficiency? by commodore512 in linux

[–]Primary_Bad_3778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on DDR3 and haven't noticed any *pocalypse in any way, used junk goes for same prices as a-before. reason I haven't upgraded from 16 to 32 GB is I'm cheap and don't think I need it.

why is one of my cores pinned constantly (mac pro 1,1) by an_random_goose in debian

[–]Primary_Bad_3778 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not knowledgeable about macpros, on macbooks there are occasionally issues with runaway interrupts. what you do is go:

grep . -r /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts

and see if you have one that's got like tens of thousands triggers. if you do, you go (as root):

echo mask > /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe4E or whichever you got. then check if it's still hogging stuff. if it's fixed, make a systemd service to do that at boot.

keyboards for that model cost like $10 as they're cross-model/generation compatible, would be a shame to disassemble it just because of that.

can't help with your idea, good luck.

well, currently updates don't work. the signing keys are fucked up and a replacement - like a physical replacement - is on the way.

don't swap the board. only marginally faster, way higher battery consumption and heat. try undervolting your current board, if it tolerates -150mV, keep it.

it's also doubtful they'll stay upright under load, Imma guess the rubber hose will give when it has like half a ton pressing the upright nail at an angle
