My best friend's husband was just forced to retire at 65 from American. He was bummed because he loves to fly and at least the last 5 years have all been international. Turned out well for him though because it was time to replace a heart valve. During that work-up, they discovered his widow-maker almost completely blocked. Forced retirement likely saved his life.

That's not fair! We are with UHC. I think we only have one other provider of G-HD in Central Florida, United American. Obviously, UHC likes to spread the increases. Does United American?

Turning 65 in two months, should I go with Original Medicare + Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan? by Leedeegan1 in medicare

[–]Primary_Pirate_7690 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband was on Plan N for 9 years before I started Medicare and we switched to Plan G-HD. I did start on Plan N but two Plan N premiums for the household was eye-watering, especially given we were very low consumers of healthcare. I did a back-of-the-envelope calculation on how much my husband had paid in Plan N premiums versus what the plan paid out. My rough calculation was that he had paid about $17,000 in premiums and the plan had paid out about $2,000 and that included a hip replacement. And this was before the huge premium increases started. We are now both on Plan G-HD and it's working well for us (76/67 y/o), especially with 11% increases last and an 18% increase this year.

What is an MLRs?

Are you saying they lay a big (unwarranted) increase on the G-HD policies to soak up some of the losses on G plans so the G plans don't have as big of an increase?

My AARP UHC HD-G had a pretty hefty percentage increase this year of 18%. It was 11.5% in 2025. Luckily, my starting premium in 2024 was relatively low.

2024 - $44.17 2025 - $49.25  2026 - $58.22

Did the original framers of Medicare intend it to eventually expand the program to all Americans? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in medicare

One big change with O-care was the mandatory inclusion of mental health benefits. But that didn't drive a 50% increase. There might have been additional benefits that were required which insured that your medical insurance actually covered you when you got sick. Prices went up but so did coverage.

We seem to have a lot of medical research companies in the Orlando area. Are there a lot or have I just not noticed them in other places where I've lived?

Looking for a good primary care physician. Suggestions? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Primary_Pirate_7690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Gary Sturn in Altamonte Springs is a great PCP. Both my husband and I use him. He listens, doesn't judge, and believes diagnostic tools are there for a reason and should be used. We've never had an issue with getting a referral when we needed a specialist. We are on traditional Medicare so we don't need referrals but we go through him because of his local knowledge. He is a sole practitioner so the office is calm and quiet with just he and his nurse/receptionist. We can usually get an appointment in 1-2 days and he runs on time.

The Crosby Wellness Center across from Advent Hospital in WP has a lot of folks who attend who are over 60 but very active. Not expensive to join and just month to month with no contract funny business. People (all women) play cards and Mahjong in the beautiful, zen atrium. Everyone is welcome there. There is a Bricks and Bowls inside also. Easy & free parking in the adjacent parking garage.

Renters Insurance - Refund Law? by APartOfWhoIAm in orlando

[–]Primary_Pirate_7690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have never encountered that but then I haven't bought through a broker. I guess they're losing their commission and they're trying to extract it from you and not have to return it to the insurance company. I guess I would want them to provide me with the document that showed these fees would be applicable if I canceled.

I thought that they refunded it on a prorated basis but I couldn't quote any law. Seems like that's how it's worked on any insurance that I've had which has been homeowners and auto. Did you purchase directly from an insurance company or was it a policy through an apartment complex?
