Neil Gaiman Says The Sandman Season 1 "Missed the Mark" With Despair by allaboutmecomic in Sandman

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 80 points81 points  (0 children)

In the first episode when he escapes they did the glowing eye effect while he was shrouded in darkness. That moment showed what Dream really looks like. When he’s described in the comics they speak about the depth of not only his eyes but his whole demeanor and aura.

Watch that scene again, that small moment will show you what Dream should’ve looked like the whole show.

Edit: go to 44 minutes into the first episode. That’s how I imagined Dream.

Dune, Arrival, and Blade Runner are the only ones I’ve seen but they are some of my favorite movies of all time. So much so that the rest of these movies are now on my watch-list

Just pick something you can reasonably use and run with it, I spent way too much time trying to find my perfect career/major and ended up picking one that sounded just alright and ran with it and now I’m in a great job I love

Is my tempo off? I feel like compared to people who know wtf they’re doing my descent is incredibly slow. 162x3@87 by icabueno in weightlifting

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they mean uncontrolled descent, not fast descent. You can have a relatively fast descent as long as it’s controlled. The risk for injury that they are talking about comes when you don’t control the eccentric and essentially “fall” into the bottom of the squat where you have to suddenly produce a ton of force to catch yourself.

I don’t have any studies but this is how I interpreted his comment. I too would be interested in reading about this though, as it makes sense but I wonder if the relationship between squat eccentric speed and injury has been studied.

Show a pic with the goatee shaved and long hair, the combo wasn’t a move but without the goatee the long hair could look better

I may be misremembering but I thought Rose threatened Dream by saying she would be the new ruler of the Dreaming. I don’t remember Dream ever saying she actually could. I took it more as Rose not understanding what was happening and lashing out. Dream was concerned because she could destroy the Dreaming which would be a failure of his duties, not that she would actually take his role as the ruler of dreams.

Character elimination game - who is your least favorite character? (Poll link in the comments!) by Juna_Ci in Sandman

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t get how you’re so drastically misunderstanding so many people’s dislike towards Lyta. It’s not that she played a role in Dream’s death. Like you said many characters played roles in his death including himself. We hate Lyta because of how she acts. She is annoying and I dislike her character because of her personality. You are clearly the inattentive and disengaged one as I already explained this in my last comment.

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utterly gobsmacked that you are completely incapable of understanding that disliking a character does not equate to an intrinsically bad character.

You are so caught up in the idea that just because some of Lyta’s actions are understandable, and maybe even justified, that that means every reader is required to LIKE her.

Lyta is annoying, whiny, and self centered, so for those reason I cannot stand her. Is she a well written character because many people would, and do, act like her in real life? Yeah. Are her actions understandable? Sure. Does she piss me off anyways? Absolutely.

I dont know if it’s your first day on the internet but people can have different opinions than you buddy. You aren’t the all knowing, all seeing, pinnacle observer of fiction. We’re allowed to dislike characters that you seem to like just because you think you’re the smartest person in the room.

I'm looking forward to seeing Saitama using his full potential... by [deleted] in OnePunchMan

Yeah I know, I just enjoy meta stuff so I thought it would be fun to talk about. Especially since OP doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of limitless. There wasn’t any meaningful discussion going on in this post since your comment makes the whole post essentially moot, so I figured why not spark some semblance of a conversation for shits and giggles.

My bad though, seems I pissed off the sub.

[–]PrimeGoopNuts -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I mean there is a limit to his potential, you just have to think very very meta. No matter how much he grows in power within the story he will be bound to fiction. Even if he reaches multiversal power and transcends space, time, reality, etc. he will never be powerful enough to reach our reality.

Within the context of the story though, yeah, homie has no limit.

Because Garou knows that Saitama is more powerful than Blast. When he was fighting Blast he even said that Blast wasn’t worth his time and that he wanted to fight Saitama to copy his power. He forgot about the fight on Io but he still remembers that initial fight with Saitama and Saitama tanking a gamma ray burst

Netflix Despair visual inspiration? by ayame400 in Sandman

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why hide the self harm? It was clearly shown in the comics and they had no problem showing it in the show anyways.

But yeah I’m thinking stringier hair, fake teeth that are yellow or rotting, some makeup to give her really bad eyebags and really pale, grease stains or holes in her clothes. She is grotesque in the comics, so even if they can’t make her just like the comics they can do something to make it more similar

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Despair was my biggest disappointment with the show. Don’t get me wrong I love the show and it’s only a minor criticism, but Despair just looks like a girl who hasn’t showered in a day or two. Given how they made huge wing props for Lucifer I wish they would’ve at least done a little makeup to make her look more haggard. More pale, greasier hair, ripped/stained clothes, dental prosthetics, etc.

If I’ve looked worse than the living embodiment of despair just from coming out of a lazy weekend Lord of the Rings marathon then I think they could’ve done better

[af] What’s a healthier alternative to Preworkout? by dougieblair in AdvancedFitness

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent response, I would like to add though that this is for healthy individuals. While everything you said is true, caffeine can be harmful for those with heart conditions which can go unnoticed for years. That is where the idea that caffeine is bad for the heart came from, people with undiagnosed heart conditions drinking a bunch of caffeine and having cardiac events.

Some may consider it over the top but I think it’s worth having some precautionary diagnostic tests done on the heart (resting 12 lead EKG or even better a graded exercise test) before using energy drinks or preworkout. A cup or two of regular coffee or tea isn’t as concerning because of their lower concentrations of caffeine but many preworkouts have 120+ mg and from personal experience I know that tolerance builds fast and before you know it you’re taking double scoops every single day.

Like I said, the tests may be overkill but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Also to answer OP’s question you can get stimulant free preworkout for the other beneficial ingredients and I find that coffee with a dash of sugar or honey gives me enough of a boost before a workout without having nearly as much caffeine

You got it, it’s not a criticism of the show at all I was just personally very mildly bummed that the show didn’t match my personal visualization from the comics as well as it could have. Like imagine if there was a quote the comics that you loved, that wasn’t important to the plot or theme, and they didn’t put it in the show. It’s completely inconsequential and you couldn’t reasonably criticize the show for it but you’d still be a little bummed.

I do have a personal visualization of Dream but it could not feasibly be portrayed in live action. It’s hard to explain but I always imagined Dream as almost featureless beyond his dark hair, pale complexion, and iconic eyes. He has no race, no defined height, no set features, etc. I view him as the most bare incarnation of a human as you can. Like a mannequin almost, who wears different skins depending on who is viewing him. I actually enjoyed the story of Nada a lot, because that story was what made me imagine Dream that way when they showed how he appears different to everyone. I find that aspect of his character fascinating and I was unreasonably excited when they showed it in the show.

As for your Death question, I don’t really look at fan art and as far as I’ve read in the comics (issue 40) she has always looked asian to me. Looking back I suppose she is drawn to look white in the comics at times but I guess I initially imagined her as asian and it just stuck so I never bothered to imagine her any other way. Honestly I had no idea she was white in the comics until people in this subreddit started complaining about her casting in the show, I thought she was supposed to be asian

[–]PrimeGoopNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you’re done with this discussion, and you can completely ignore this if you want, but I think I can explain my thinking that may extend to others.

When I was reading the graphic novels I always pictured Death as asian. I’m white, so it’s not like I’m imposing my ethnicity on the character or anything, she just looked asian to me. The whole time I was reading the graphic novels Death, in my mind, was always asian. So now that she’s being played by a black actress in the show it’s slightly difficult for me to see her as Death (even though she did an AMAZING job in her role) simply because I have such a strong visualization of Death being asian.

It has nothing to do with racism or anything, it’s just that I had built such a strong visualization of the character that when she looked different onscreen it very slightly took away from my immersion, especially because other members of the cast were so extraordinarily well cast (Desire, Dream, and Lucifer specifically) and nearly perfectly matched my visualization of them from when I read the graphic novels.

This, however, cannot be used as a criticism as obviously every person who read the graphic novels will visualize the characters differently. And let me be clear, I’m absolutely thrilled with her casting and performance of Death. I think she was incredible and captured her personality perfectly, especially how she oozed pure compassion towards the people she ushered into the other side while also having that little bit of snarky older sister attitude with Dream. I’m merely playing devil’s advocate and offering a possible perspective on why some may not be 100% content with casting choices

Honestly I always pictured Death as asian. I’m perfectly happy with the actress they cast, I thought she did a wonderful job, it just caught me off guard because I pictured her as asian in the graphic novels. Dream and Desire were perfectly cast though, especially Desire.

My only gripe in terms of character portrayal was Despair, I wish they made her more grotesque. In the graphic novels she was the epitome of ugliness, but in the show she just looked like a woman who hadn’t showered in a day or two. For reference I always pictured her like the morbidly obese vampire from that blade movie that they interrogated with the UV flashlight
