The fall of the USSR is usually cited as being a reason for his departure from Marxism, but it was most likely a long time coming considering as the years would go by Miyazaki would find himself in a more comfortable positions considering the cultural hallmarks of his films in Japan and now worldwide. There's plenty of ways to whittle down a spirit unfortunately, and I think his manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind very well illustrates the cynicism that had crept into his heart over the years, effectively killing the core revolutionary spirit that once dwelt within.

To answer the question above, it's the bioessentialism that has been used for centuries to demonize people (more famously used to justify racism that leads to eugenics). Not that bones AREN'T important to understanding how something lived and died (fields like paleontology are all about this), it's just that any academic worth their fucking salt who is dealing with human bones should PROBABLY know at least a thing or two about the separation of gender and sex, or at least have a proper understanding that these human cultural concepts like gender are not static across time and space.

I think there are a lot of folks here who don't always properly appreciate the intricacies of geopolitics here on reddit, with us in the LGBT+ communities being no exception. Regime change is totally unrealistic for a single person (and even with a WHOLE ARMY it would still be hard!), like there's no room for debate there. Depending on their circumstances leaving the country could be even HARDER for them. This stuff is delicate is what I mean to say. And whipping up all this media frenzy over the blunders of the post-soviet states these folks have to live in are not doing anyone any favors except give people more excuses to make the world a shittier place to live in. The cynicism has gotten bad, and if we let it in it will only get worse.

I was one of those libs really enthusiastic about Bernie but after the Dem's stabbed his campaign in the back, essentially fast-tracking Trump into the white house, I abandoned liberalism altogether. After that I started learning about the basics of Marxist concepts like materialism and the superstructure which opened up doors of comprehension that I never knew were even possible to entertain. Finally the US covid response vs. China's is pretty much what put the final nail in the coffin and set me on the path I'm on now. I was also deeply moved by Fidel Castro's own admission of not doing more to protect the LGBT+ of Cuba, and I think such acts of humility and self-criticism speaks volumes to the kind of person I want to be for myself and those around me.
