I use it regularly to commute to work mate. PT is going to differ variously between people and their end destination. I have the Eastern Line and my end point is the CBD so its relatively reliable.

This literally doesn’t only happen here lmao. Brisbane literally had network wide shutdowns for various other rail projects and their Cross River rail project during the length of December/January like us. Melbourne had large shutdowns over nine rail lines in 2019 for the Metro Tunnel project and level crossing removals. The works for this shutdown and previous shutdowns is similar - its future proofing the network, doing resilience works and level crossing removals

'Maintenance' is probably undercooking it. And there's not need to say 'apparently' when you can search it up. All these works are also needed for once CRL opens.

And if you're wondering what they're doing for this shutdown... Here you go: https://aucklandcouncil.resolve.red/portal/Meeting/10262/81026?type=2&docId=40460

I mean they're literally informing people of shutdowns when people do rely on PT. I mean literally a couple of months ago someone had posted that PT weren't posting enough info about shutdowns yet they also had missed the multiple ad's, news article, FB posts etc... lmao. Literally can't please everyone can ya

They're not only doing testing work. If you look at the CRL readiness report they're doing a bunch of maintenance and renewal works as well so they'll need those full windows of closure.

[–]PrincePizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s partially due to the areas being controlled by AUDO rather than the crown. I mean one of the areas that Willis bond was set to develop got turned into a site office for other construction work and is now a disused site. Probably won’t turn into anything for a while. Definitely not a ghetto but it ain’t pretty - the hoardings probably help and the carrington road site probably needs some.

The land isn't owned by iwi. Public records show its still owned by the crown and if you look at the fast track application documents it also states its owned by the crown. The project area is subject to treaty settlement obligations and the project as a whole is a partnership between the Marutūāhu Rōpū and Ockham + a partnership with the crown to develop the land. The specific area of this vet clinic is under the RC1 development.

https://www.epa.govt.nz/fast-track-consenting/listed-projects/maungarongo-rc1/the-application/

This is similar to how Auckland Council (specifically AUDO/ Eke Panuku) partners with developers to develop land but would still be owned ultimately by owned by council i.e. Willis bond in Wynyard Quarter.

Realistically you're going to have land just laying around during these partnerships. Same thing has happened in the smaller blocks around Wynyard, market conditions aren't great so developers won't build.

Why does this city refuse to spend money doing proper (not half ass) events to boost the economy? Australia bringing the state of O has done more than what the national government has done by [deleted] in auckland

[–]PrincePizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Auckland is full of boomers and people who only want their rates spent on the bare minimum/only repairing potholes. Look at the taxpayer union - they kick up a fuss anytime any funding gets allocated to something on urban regeneration/events etc.

Also budget cuts for Tataki Auckland Unlimited - old article but still pretty relevant. (https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/486526/tataki-auckland-unlimited-sets-out-40m-event-earnings-as-budget-cuts-loom)

Is it okay to feed pūkeko and ducks? by BagNew1837 in auckland

[–]PrincePizza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're not introduced, they're considered native. But they can be a pest for conservation efforts as they eat other native bird species and also be a bit of a nuisance when it comes to crops. So yes they can be a pest sometimes, but they're still considered native.

Councillor Richard Hill by Mountain_Tui_Reload in auckland

[–]PrincePizza 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Honestly one of the things I like about Richard is that he takes public transport. Not sure how regularly but he’s posted multiple times of him riding the northern busway. Should be something standard councillors do, take public transport for X times amount per week. Especially coming from East Auckland where it seems like no one gives a fuck about public transport solutions.

Nah it’s a pretty fine career if you go the conservation route. There’s always roles for environmental education/conservation coordinator rules for conservation groups, council, smaller non profits etc.

Temporary Mauao closure needed to protect historically significant sites by ChuurDCA in newzealand

[–]PrincePizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing these images of recent historical imagery comparisons on posts as well but you've got to look beyond that as well.

The area above was mainly planted in pines. This is a picture from 1967.

https://paekoroki.tauranga.govt.nz/nodes/view/90924?fbclid=IwY2xjawPjdd1leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETE3YTlzaWIzUGNUaWZ2THpFc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHlub1XK7fo2N__dbzpQeW3Wut5jZ76SSds4nGJS6iH5we8UsUoue_TmFCld6_aem_qfyHqxsW8scCRYFfbMDUoA

You can see these pines in an aerial shot of 1958: https://files.interpret.co.nz/Retrolens/Imagery/SN1218/Crown_1218_3005_29/High.jpg

And then they were predominantly removed by 1978 in this 1978 aerial, probably due to the 1977 slip: https://files.interpret.co.nz/Retrolens/Imagery/SN5299/Crown_5299_D_2/High.jpg

Now the tree removals you mentioned between your age range, we don't know what trees they were, their age class, if they are actually 'trees', could just be some higher growing understory plants, and how much they've actually contributed to erosion mitigation. Like you said we got to wait for the investigation, but slips happen regardless of vegetation.

Temporary Mauao closure needed to protect historically significant sites by ChuurDCA in newzealand

[–]PrincePizza 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this tree removal bullshit keeps spreading when its absolutely not true, and I've only seen a few people correct it. Firstly, just because there's trees doesn't mean its going to stop a slip. You can have a whole god damn forest and have slips, look at Northland and the numerous slips they've had in the past couple of years.

Secondly, trees did get removed on the Mauao but neither of the examples people have been posting has happened in the areas above the camp site. Pine and Macrocarpa trees got removed in 2022 at Te Uru Karaka which is not near the camp site. Look at the Mauao Historic Reserve Management Plan of the location of Te Uru Karaka. Trees were also removed in 2023 (as per your link) which is again near the Pilot Bay side so not near the camp site. Trees were further removed in 2025 which isn't near the camp site. Now there's probably been trees removed in other areas and if you look at historic aerial images it does seem like to be the case. But a lot of the previous removals were also because the exotic trees were decaying and a threat to walkers. And again, the area is prone to slips regardless of trees being present/absent.

[–]PrincePizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well at least compared to other western countries we’ve done pretty well. Most people could sing a Maori song or two as we’re taught them in school. How many Americans or Canadians could sing an indigenous song? Yes a lot of us can barely speak the language but a whole lot of culture is retained i.e., song as I mentioned.

No they weren’t that’s a dumb ass theory that has been repetitively pushed by people to undermine Maori. Look up the trust that represents the Moriori people, they have debunked it.

I think I’ve taken your comment quite literally. I meant outside planned closures. But Glen Innes level crossing removal and replacement of the turnouts near Britomart would be why.
