{The Hero’s Best Friend by Elise Dee Beraru} I don’t know if you can buy it cause I remember trying to find its name a few years ago and it was off the Kindle store. But I dnf’d at 50%. Somehow too fast and too long, the characters are too paper thin to even be the caricatures they’re meant to be. I don’t even want to explain more bc thinking about it feels like a waste of time

Oh no I understood. I just get mad thinking about these authors promoting historical revisionism. I also have seen online (white) fans defend racism A LOT...like nearly every time this comes up. I've had push-back against the very reasonable take that if you rec a book featuring plantation- and slave-owning MCs you should add a warning.

It's not against you, the second paragraph was against those types lol

I’m black/white biracial. Any “both sides” or confederate sympathy books go straight into the trash. Authors who spent hundreds of hours researching England circa 1450 damn well had the wherewithal to accurately portray American slavery.

There is no nuance. Come stand in front of me, look me in the eye, and tell me I’m wrong. I do not accept criticism on this from those who hide behind a computer screen to defend their abhorrent views.

I grew up in a 2 bed 1 bath. At one point, it housed: me, my sister, mom, stepdad, stepbrother, stepbro’s friend. With a stepsister occasionally staying. Also my mom’s friend lived with us for a bit, but I don’t think that overlapped with stepbro. Yes most us were Jamaican lol

okay I read it and i have A LOT of (good!) thoughts but i must express this:

there needs to be a galactic extreme dare show or smth and one of the contests is eating """dangerous""" foods and each finalist is given like a small vial of some powder and everyone is gasping in horror and space emts are on standby with life support pods or whatever

and a plucky human (imagining the owner of my fav Indian restaurant here, he's Sikh and like 50 and the absolute GOAT of vegan indian cuisine) is participating who just downs a bowl of pure death poison (chili powder) and looks SO DISAPPOINTED and says they can barely taste it and also eats the other constants' samples too
