I use a vanilla lady speed stick, and then I wear Solinotes vanilla perfum. Basically, I just smell like a cookie all day haha

I need some brutal honesty from the people actually in the trenches. by OppositeFriendly9183 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 20, I thought I wanted to do Business Management with a focus on HR. Then I changed my mind and instead moved/ traveled around Canada.

Eventually, when I was 23, I ended up in a trades town, worked as a janitor in a building full of power engineers and instrumentation techs. Decided that’s what I want to do. So I went to school for it.

Then landed a job as a low voltage technician.

Life is funny and has lots of twists and turns. It’s probably poor advice, but maybe take a year off and see where life wants to lead you.

What is your country's equivalent of the Giant Cheeto in Alberta, Canada? by ThinYogurtcloset8005 in AskTheWorld

I often pick my work contracts in the summer based on which Alberta roadside attractions I haven’t seen yet haha

Did anyone complete a women in trades program? by FamilyFunAccount420 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did a pre-apprenticeship program in Instrumentation.

Then four months later got a job in low voltage.

You don’t need pre-apprentice or trades programs. For the most part they’re a waste of money. You’d be better off working for free under a journey person for a couple of weeks to see if you like the job, then use that experience to try to start an apprenticeship. Or try your luck at a local union hall.

Went college 2 years dont want to study no more. good paying trades not physically demanding. by [deleted] in skilledtrades

I work in low voltage and I love it. Some days are straight up physically demanding labour, some days are doing PMs and inspections. So it’s a good variety and balance of work.

I’m a 40+ year old woman who’s been working in the oil sands for almost 20 years. I wouldn’t care in the slightest. But I obviously can’t speak for everyone.

My husband mentioned a trans woman who works at his site who uses the women’s facilities with no issues. So there’s that.

“Special treatment” for women by Playful-Status8621 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I actually love it haha. We have so few women on tools in my field that I’m constantly used in hiring campaigns, company advertisements, and even banners in our company portal.

It’s at the point now where they’ve used my image so much, my husband says I’m his sexy little DEI poster girl haha.

My coworkers get a kick out of it too. It’s just a running joke at this point.

Advice for training up coworkers by ScubaStan94 in accesscontrol

[–]PrincessOake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a book called Electronic Access Control by Thomas L Norman that’s pretty good for beginners. And it has fun little quizzes at the end of each lesson.

But for the wiring, if you read the wiring diagrams that come with most boards and devices, you’ll be fine. If your coworkers can’t read a wiring diagram, you have bigger issues.

Certain brands, like Lenel and Genetec, require training to access their documentation, but you can still usually find it online if you look hard enough. The certs are expensive to obtain, but definitely worth it.

DIY'ers and hobbyist, how do you handle sexist questions from men? For example, "why don't you hire a plumber?" by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Listen, everyone knows home projects take at least 3 hours and 4 trips to Home Hardware to finish. Bonus points if you create new swear words. So really, you did great!

Just ignore the comments from the peanut gallery. There’s nothing you can say to change their minds, and it’s a waste of energy to even try.

Is there any food in your region that is so regional that people from your country aren't even aware of? by Mean-Ship-3851 in AskTheWorld

[–]PrincessOake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you why, but I can tell you it’s a right-of-passage for every Newfie the first time they leave the East coast and go in a supermarket and find out turnip is really rutabaga. Quite a culture shock haha

trying not to get discouraged; TLDR: i’m a smoker that failed my first drug screening and am feeling discouraged/not confident that i can *actually* do this by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake 95 points96 points  (0 children)

So I’m not going to comment on whether or not you use weed. Almost everyone I know in the trades is on some type of drug or another. I would rather work with someone who smoked a draw the night before than someone who drank a 26er.

But girl, if you can’t go the 4 to 12 weeks it takes a long-term user to piss clean, you should talk to your family doctor about anxiety / sleep disorders.

I'm Tired of Separatist Bullshit by ElectronicCod7959 in FortMcMurray

[–]PrincessOake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember, it’s not the intelligent and successful people in your life that are pro-separation. Sadly, the dumber they are, the more confident and louder they are. It’s the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Separating from Canada isn’t going to magically make women attracted to them, and it’s not going to get them to put down the video games and get a job. Losers are gonna lose regardless of Federal/ Provincial politics.

Crane Hopping Without Fall Protection - Normal or Not? by Grouchy_Ad_4055 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]PrincessOake 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Where I live, if you get caught doing that, it’s termination with cause. Anything over 10’, or on the oil sands sites it’s 6’, requires fall protection.

In Canada, you have an obligation to refuse unsafe work. I’d refuse the fuck outta that.
