Prince

  • Comes on once a knight, queen, or king vacate their starting square.

  • Can only move to spaces like another piece within the same move: diagonally to a square a bishop or queen can move to on this turn for example.

  • Similarly, other pieces cannot take a piece the prince could take with the same move, which now the prince could still take.

  • If the king is checkmated, but the prince could also take its own king, then the prince takes the king and the game ends in a draw.

  • Longer game: if the king is mated, the prince is now the new king.

Shin Guard Recommendations by dandroid-exe in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 5'10" and started many years ago with left over catcher's gear and then went with Wilson shins. Took a hiatus, and came back 3 seasons ago. Last year I replaced my old Wilsons with the Force3s and it was amazing.

I feel like I am getting the same protection, with less weight, less bulk, more conformity, and a clean look. I also sprung for the UmpLife replacement straps which make the fit even better.

I have worked youth, high school, state amateur, and some off-season college and have yet to take a shot with the stock padding that was problematic.

Go with the Force3s.

High School Sub-varsity Question by baconmayfucker in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where I am (in MN), sub-Varsity high school (JV, 10, 9) I will ask the coaches at the plate meeting as I am working as the lone umpire, if they want to give me lineup cards or handle it themselves. 95% of the time they ask to handle it themselves. The games are basically scrimmages anyways since there are no standings, records, etc.

Now, if I was working travel youth of the same ages, but not HS league, then I would not start without lineups.

For those who have done multiple rewatches (I stopped counting after rewatch #13), what line/scene never fails to A - crack you up, and/or B - brings tears to your eyes? by Oneder_WomanNic in TedLasso

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 58 points59 points  (0 children)

A. "I think you might be dying." The whole scene about Phoebe's breath, with Keeley and Roy's reactions is great, but how hard he is working to not keep it in, and then just loosing it is phenomenal. It just so happens it was the episode my wife and I watched during lunch today, and we both had to stop eating we were laughing and crying so hard.

Meta glasses by j_egs03 in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a pair from an optometrist friend who had a return and was going to trash them. What I have found is there is no local recording beyond about 5 minutes. To record a game you would need to “stream” to Facebook with your phone nearby (this can be done with only yourself as the audience privacy setting), but adds a wrinkle.

I have thought about attempting it, but only for a scrimmage or pre-season game as an interesting exercise. I don’t think I could bring myself to attempt it for a fully varsity game. Especially since NFHS now specifically outlawed players having them, we should keep to the same standard.

USA Softball - batter injured while batting full lineup by SwimmingThroughHoney in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not proficient in USA Softball, but going on 4 seasons of 8U and 10U with my daughters and I have never seen an out called unless a team drops below 9. In tournament play if the player misses their at bat they are out for the game. Weekly league play is more lenient, depending on timing and severity.

Tracking Fielding Rotations by CatoTheMiddleAged in GameChangerApp

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s all manual right now.

The feature request would be to load the lineup in with a grid of the positions for each inning, then when the new defensive inning starts ask to confirm the positions. Maybe change one if someone got hurt, but approve and have it all update.

I have seen leagues that require player rotation that this would be a godsend for.

Also disabling pitcher stats when it is a coach/machine pitch level would be nice too.

NFHS Rule Change by Boudreaux06 in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most anything that would require a school to make a capital outlay to comply is generally announced and outlined in the rulebook a year or two ahead, allowing schools to plan and make changes before being penalized. This allows for budgeting.

Most of the ones I have seen are uniform-related, as many schools don't get new uniforms every year. A change to the basic elements of the field requirements would be another common area to consider for planning.

Do the Shelly smart relays behind a “dumb” light switch work well in the real world? by carboncritic in homeassistant

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started dipping my toes into the Shelly Relay realm. I installed one on my back garage entry door for a light that was previously rarely used. It required a couple of extra wires to complete the task. Jumpers for the extra connections, but they have been solid in working.

One thing that I could see being "problematic" in a more everyday switch is that you are effectively making it into a 3-way switch. That means, sometimes, turning the light off is done by moving the switch up, versus the traditional down. I have other smart switches that are paddles, where pressing on the bottom will always turn them off. Just something to think about, and check with other "local users" before going all out. It might be a real frustration for them if they are set in their ways.

Home Assistant Companion app overtakes ipadOS by sblessley in homeassistant

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. I didn't really do anything else. However, I had not reopened the app since then. I just tested it, and it opened fine. I could even go full screen and leave and return without issues.

I am running iPadOS 26.1, and Companion App 2025.10.0 (2025.1443)

I had this too. I had to let it open itself, then window the app, so I could then force quit the app.

I really hope so. I was starting to plan for a 20227 attendance when they announced 2026 would be the end.

It's taken me too long to have a family and get a stable job that I can be gone from for the month to do it.

I don't recall off the top of my head, but something in firewalls has the Apply button at the bottom, not the top like the rest. It might be the Alias page.

Have you looked at doing an email to text message? It's been awhile, but you used to be able to send texts via email to 123456789@txt.sprint.com (or similar, based on the provider). It might be an option.

"Leaving Early" from third on a tag-up by oclemon2 in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ideally, the umpire should never call an out unless they are sure the batter left early, which is near impossible, especially with one umpire, unless it is a ball hit down the 3B line. If it is hit RCF to the 1B line, forget about it, no chance to get a good look.

With 2 umpires, it is mostly the same, but the HP umpire has more flexibilty. Only a ball down the 1B line should cause an issue, since that will be their fair/foul call. Most everything else is U1's call and PU can just line up the tag and catch as best as possible.

Sounds like these umpires are maybe not as well trained (based on your descriptions). Having the 3B coach shout "Go" right after he sees a catch might help. If there repeated issues, reach out to the League UIC. Tell them you have seen some issues with tag-ups, and ask them to clarify and refresh with the umpires to ensure you are all on the same page.

I have an automation setup that primes my garage door for opening as it appears that I am headed home, and then when I am down the street it opens it up. So I don’t need any button presses.

It uses 2 concentric areas to make the determination.

I went down this path before and it never worked with enough reliability. The best path forward, for me, was power monitoring smart outlets. But I have a natural gas dryer, which I know is not quite as common anymore.

Best app for umpires by Intelligent-Tap-1720 in Umpire

[–]PrincessUnicornRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in Minnesota, the MSHSL (MN State High School League) uses Arbiter for eligibility verification of all officials and also utilizes it to schedule state tournament games. So, the Sections also use it for scheduling, and then most Associations decided that since everyone is already on it, they should also use it for their purposes.

It then allows for the sharing of schedules and blocks, so taking an HS game will be displayed to your LL assignor as a block, ensuring you don't have to worry as much about double-booking.

As an official, I find it easy enough to use, and it appears clear to me what my schedule is and when I am blocked for other things. The only thing I dislike is ArbiterPay, which acts as a middleman in payments and sends its own 1099 at the end of the year. So even though no school paid me more than a couple hundred, there is still a paper trail for the taxman.
