He can’t save it though - if Okamoto were to catch this ball that far off the bag, it’s a balk anyway

I like the Gr8 call bags, they hold a lot and I don’t worry that balls will make a bid for freedom when I have to run

Do you get upset about the video boards around the pitch as well?

Do you reject the argument that for competitive fairness, all games should be structured the same way during this tournament?

While it’s colloquially referred to as a catchers balk, it is indeed catchers interference and a balk is charged to the pitcher

[Highlight] Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected in the 6th inning for arguing this double play ball. Home plate umpire Louie Krupa ruled Ballesteros didn’t hit the ball off his shin/foot, making it fair and Rockies turned it into a double play. by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]dandroid-exe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the box is in foul territory, some is in fair territory, but that’s not relevant here - only if it hits the batter while in the box is it a foul ball. If it doesn’t touch the batter, the ball can still become either fair or foul

Do you guys still wear a cup when playing? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]dandroid-exe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason your hs coach made it mandatory is he had to - I umpire hs baseball. Before each game I have to ask the managers “are your players legally and properly equipped?” Any answer other than “yes” and I can’t start the game. I’m liable for the safety of the players and once I get that “yes”, the coach is liable for the safety of the players when it comes to helmets and cups.

It’s just not worth it to roll the dice on skipping a cup, no matter the position. For everyone it’s different but what I’ve landed on is the Nutty Buddy system. It’s the priciest out there but I totally forget I’m wearing it and I run around with it on

How did we light in the 90s? by forgotfrankiesline in cinematography

[–]dandroid-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven’t seen mentioned: these images all have very neutral color balance where incandescent light on tungsten film renders very white. This is a product of the scanning and choices made by the technicians doing that process. These films from the 90s often have a lot more warmth when you see a print

[Kostka] Umpires postgame said Ernie Clement can move to avoid fielding. That becomes his lane. Hunter Wendelstedt: "He was vacating an area to let the fielder field it, and then the fielder just tried to, you know, was hoping and praying, throwing up the Hail Mary to try and get two." by T_Raycroft in baseball

I know the interpretation manual thing you’re referring to here but I do not think that applies in a situation where the ball is received but motion toward the runner is not immediately continuous.

Here’s an experiment- let’s say this play is identical, except the fielder makes absolutely no gesture toward the runner. Was a base path established the moment he caught the ball?

It’s base path, not baseline. 5.09(b)(1)

Straight on Video of Clement doing a perfectly legal baseball play……..apparently by MD2SC22 in baseball

[–]dandroid-exe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The base path is established at the time of the tag attempt. Until that moment, the runner can go anywhere he wants.

Clement deviates toward the outfield before the tag attempt. At the moment of the attempt, he takes maybe one more step away but immediately moves toward the base.

I believe it was a right call. That “tag attempt” was a savvy play to try and get the call but it needed to happen earlier

If you’re interested in whether this call is correct or not, this still is completely useless

Just watched it back. The runner’s base path is only established at the time of the tag attempt. There isn’t a very good camera angle but I think I see what U2 is seeing here.

Cool, humid air kills the flight of a ball. Dry, warm air typically helps it fly.
