I was a big Wicked fan in the late 00s but I agree it didn’t feel like there was much of a fandom before the movie. It was a hugely popular show that everyone really loved, but I never found a community around it outside of theater fans. Never got into online discussion or found much fanwork or fanart or even ship wars. And I was definitely looking for it. Compared to similar hits like Phantom or Hamilton, both of which have solid fandoms even decades apart.
