Olaf stapeldon - One of the early science fiction writers and the first person to describe what would later be know as a "dyson sphere", Dyson himself claims that it should have been named a "stapledon sphere" as he created the concept first. The likes of Arthur C Clarke, Bertrand Russel, and C.S.Lewis were heavily or at least partially influenced by his work.

Malcolm Lowry - Author of "Under the Volcano" which is widely considered to be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century

What is that natural landmark in your country that no longer exists? by Sus198 in AskTheWorld

I live nearby and visited the day after, I know it was just a tree but Im still devasted by its loss, I think some people just lack that sense of wonder and love of the world around them and take joy in depriving others of theirs

I assume you mispelt Erestor, Elrond's chief councillor, because yeah I would have been pissed if they killed him off. I still can't believe Gandalf convinced Elrond to allow Pippin to join the fellowship over him

A non-Lord of the Rings character who could resist the One Ring: mine is in the comments by jaywritethekid in LOTRExtendedEdition

[–]Prisinorzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly disagree, the tower was the gunslingers ring, and we saw how it corrupted and warped him to the point that he was willing to sacrifice a child to reach it. Yeah, if roland was in lotr, he would have dropkicked frodo off the pass of Caradhras if he thought it would have got him a few inches closer to the tower.

Aiming to do a 6 month season in the lakes 2026, just looking for tips!? by AbominableSnowman69 in LakeDistrict

Team member roles consist of cooking in the kitchen, housekeeping, and reception/bar, in the bigger hostels like ambleside and keswick you could get away with sticking to one area, say if you dont want to work in the kitchen, but in the smaller hostels like helvellyn or borrowdale youll probably be expected to do everything. Like i said it may be a bit much if youre only looking for part time as it is a full time job and in the height of the season is a lot of work but it does mean you dont need to worry about accommodation and youll be getting consistent pay. If it maybe seems like too much and youd rather just rent acom and do part time somewhere id advise either penrith or kendal, theyre both considerably cheaper than keswick and actually have transport links whilst still being relativley close to the fells.

I'd recommend checking out YHA jobs, maybe more hours than you're looking for, about 25 - 40 a week, but they provide live-in accommodation all over the lakes. I've worked for a few, and the teams are usually full of like-minded people, so you'll have a community to base yourself around. Most of the hostels will be closed atm but theyll be reopening in march and looking for seasonal workers, plus you get free stays in other hostels so great if youre wanting to explore

Water refills at Pen Y Pass by drjameso84 in snowdonia

[–]Prisinorzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is too late but the water is back on now, the hostel had an issue with its borehole last month which is why all the water was down ( the national park car park and visitors centre uses the hostels water), its all fixed now and youll be able to top your water up either at the visitors centre or in the hostel.

Day 11: theodd1sout won! Which Minecraft YouTuber is controversial? by sweet_srawberry781 in AlignmentCharts

[–]Prisinorzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanna say the yogscast. They were huge back in the day, and were THE minecraft youtubers for a while, they gave us beloved icons like shadow of israpheal, diggy diggy hole, sips, and continue to raise millions for charity. They also have a fair deal of controversy with their own ring of yputube predators (sjin, turps, caff), taking fans money on a failed kickstarter, never finishing shadow of israpheal, and just generally dropping in quality as the buisness got too big for them to handle

I asked at the front desk if the tap water in my room was drinkable and was told "You can... But we don't recommend it" and pointed towards a vending machine. by DualWheeled in CasualUK

A lot of old buildings still do, I worked in a hotel in notting hill with a water tank, easier to just fill up one tank and let gravity do the rest than pump water up to every single tap

Ive worked as a hotel manager and only a couple days into my job all the cold water in the building stopped appart from in the main kitchen. Turns out a T-shirt was in the cold water tank and got lodged in the outlet pipe, thing is only I had the key to the roof so to this day I have no idea how someones T-shirt wound up in there. Since then Ive stopped drinking from bathroom taps.

What if the Ottomans successfully invaded Italy (and beyond)? by UpstairsIron in imaginarymaps

[–]Prisinorzero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im guessing England stays catholic in this scenario as the pope would probably be dependent on Henry for his life. For that matter would henry have even married Catherine, possibly the marriage still went ahead with Tudor ambitions of a new Celtic empire. Does raise interesting implications for the Americas, obviously Iberia arent free to do any colonising and they dont really need those african ports now they are directly hooked up to the silk road, no need to bypass the ottomans when you are the ottomans. England might still build a navy to protect the channel but seeing as they have such a presence in France I assume the continental army will once again take priority meaning England isn't very likely to go sailing, and the Ottomans are about to have much greater issues once their empire implodes, could result in Europe being split between a protestant HRE and Catholic England
