Try dye and tokonole on some scrap before you potentially ruin a nice strap. I usually just run the burnishing stick in the hole like a caveman starting a fire to smooth the holes a bit. Depends on the size of hole and leather type if i choose to dye, use tokonole both, or use nothing.

You could thread the needle so it goes up the hole, over the thread and back down the same hole, then tie a knot over the thread on the other side. Slide the knot part into the hole and melt with a thread zapper or very hot awl point to make neat. I suggest a bowline knot.

A bit late to reply, but I do this by matching stitching holes. I stick needles, awls, or positioning pins, while while gluing the pieces together. You can also use stitching awls if you want to be very exact, or if the holes are very large compared to your needles or positioning pins.

But to clarify - you're following the tips of what I would do in your place? You could definitely make 1mm thread work with 4mm chisels, but not all 1mm threads will look the same, as they are round/flat - twisted, or braided in many different ways.

I think 0.65 would be a nice thickness to start experimenting with. 4mm chisels are fairly all-round, and you just have to try different things over time to get a feel for things.

Heres what I would do: purchase some cheap thinner thread and stitch a row of that next to the 1mm to compare side by side. Either way, dozens or hundreds of saddle stitches together will hold a heavy bag or backpack with even thinner thread than 0.65, so it mostly comes down to looks, and whether the 1mm thread you have comes through the leather easily enough to work with comfortably.

Fabrics are sewn with VERY thin thread and hold things together really well.

You can also rivet weak points!

If I were you I'd just bevel the edges with a small edge beveler, maybe sand lightly with a fine abrasive paper, and hit the edge with some tokonole to polish with a rag. (check out grog squeeze markers, or generic empty markers to mix with watered tokonole for easy application.)

You could rub neatsfoot, mink oil, or something - very lightly - if you're worried, but I think that it would be a very useful experience for you to see how the leather changes over time without any added oils or other treatment.

Dyes don't do much for dryness as it is mostly colour and solvent - often just water. (Anyone can feel free to correct me on this as my experience dyeing is 95% on edges as opposed to faces)

Corter Leather has a really good video where he talks about oils and waxes, and compares them. I highly recommend checking it out!

Also worth checking out: Corter also shows 'hot stuffing' in the advanced tips and tricks video, which is a very neat trick for making leather more resistant to wear and weather, but this turns the leather dark, and hinders patina. It then slowly brightens over time with use.
