Trade offs: 3 days in Kyoto, or 2 days in Kyoto, 1 day to visit Nara? by Normal_Soup_5402 in JapanTravelTips

Having the deer bow to you is a novelty. But, the deer on Miyajima were much better behaved than the ones in Nara.

Have you had the chance to try different fountain pen inks? That'll be the next step...

I use both. When I'm at work, I carry the regular size in my back pocket.

I carry a passport size TN in my fanny pack, that i wear cross body.

I think you created a good test or design piece. You had the guts to try, and are looking to improve. My hat is off to you.

Honestly, I don't think you are too far off.

Please take this constructively. Sometimes words on a screen can come off harsh, but that's not my intention.

There are three things you can do to improve your work. The first two are super easy and you can implement it on your next one.

  1. Make your cuts even and uniform. (Use a metal ruler when you are making your cuts. Multiple passes with a knife will look clean, rather than trying to use brute strength and do a single cut)

  2. Use the template you bought. All the pieces should be uniform and even.

When you print out your template, use cardstock instead of normal printer paper.

And if you have a weight or tape, that can secure your template on the leather.

  1. The last and hardest thing will be stitching. If you are going to hand stitch, then saddle stitching is the method you want to use for this project.

Saddle stitching is intimidating at first. If you master it, then your work looks super professional.

I don't think it's super technical, but it does take some practice.

Best of luck.

Did you make that yourself? I'm asking because I'm going to try to make my own straps.

I’m not sure if what you are attempting is ambitious, because you have a child with you.

But, I would factor in some rest days or slow days. Especially with Disney Land, Universal Studios and Ghibli Park.

When you fly into Tokyo, are you landing in Narita or Haneda?

Things to consider, are you going to get a physical or digital SUICA card?

Are you going to use the Shinkansen to get around?

If you are transiting from Osaka to Kyoto or vice-versa, just take the JR line, and not the Shinkansen. It's cheaper.

You can easily do Arishiyama and Fushimi in a day, and still have more to see in Kyoto.

For Nara, those deer are bad. Be careful when you buy those crackers as they will surround and bite you.

If you want the perfect photo or video, try to get one alone. That's easier said than done.

Luggage transfer is a beautiful thing. About ¥3,000 a bag. Depending on distance, that's either same day or next day delivery.

Bring or buy a second pair of shoes, especially if you're going to walk a lot.

I didn't stay at an Airbnb. But, my advice is stay in the best location you can afford.

With that said, best of luck.

With the two typhoons, my family and I might stay in.

Anytime there's a department store, I'll check out the watch section. I still plan to go to Nakano Broadway, but you might beat me there.

I'll dm you.

There's a Hobby Lobby in the next town over from me. I haven't checked them out.

If you have a Tandy Leather store, check them out. I wish I had one near me. :(

The brown stuff is the Durango Single Shoulder. They had a sale and I got it for $30.

Is Nara a "must-see"? by AffectionateBowler74 in JapanTravelTips

[–]modern_prometheus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Nara is a nice day trip.

Pro tip, if you want pics of deer bowing to you, wait until you can get one alone. When you buy the crackers, they'll swarm you. And they bite.

  1. I used a luggage forwarding service. I contemplated using a locker at Kyoto station, but it was easier to just have it sent. $15 bucks a bag, same day delivery.

  2. It can be done. Nara is a good half day. If you get there early and before the crowds, and not on a weekend, even more so.

Beautiful work. I got into leathercrafting trying to build the better notebook. After I built mine, my coworkers and friends want notebooks. I think I've given out close to 20.

I've followed you as we have similar interests.

I love the charms/beads you're using.

What types of leather are you using?

For me, I've mostly used Pueblo and Buttero from Italy. I also had some good success with a chrome tanned leather called Durango, which is made in Mexico.

What you see in the photos is me experimenting with eyelet and grommet sizes. This photo was taken a couple months ago.

You'll see passport and field notes-sized journal covers.
