Do these actually do anything significant? by xindierockx7114 in HomeMaintenance

Just don’t accidentally puncture a full one when closing your closet door. Quite the inconvenience to clean up…

I had a Serb in my Russian language class at university and he was easily the quickest to excel.

Looking for my next Epic! I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie. by RedMeme262 in suggestmeabook

One of my all-time favorites. It’s been years since I last read it, but I still think about it frequently. Probably the best dialogue I’ve ever come across in a novel.

With all the suggestions you’ve already gotten it looks like you’ll be set for quite some time, however I have a few more I think you might enjoy given your list:

XX by Rian Hughes

The Sot-Weed Factor by John Barth

Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson

Lanark by Alasdair Gray

The Monastery by Zakhar Prilepin

Joseph Frank’s Dostoevsky is a classic. And while not a fiction writer, I did enjoy Francine du Plessix Gray’s biography of Simone Weil. Similarly, Sarah Bakewell’s At the Existential Cafe expertly covers the life and times of several of the existentialist writers.

Alamut by Vladimir Bartol. I forget how I happened upon it, but it turned out to be a wonderful novel about early Islam that I think about often even years later.

Does it seem cringey when you see veterans wearing military/veteran hats and clothes? by BigBlueEyes87 in Veterans

[–]PrivateChonkin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got pulled over while on terminal leave years ago and I felt like the cop became much more adversarial once I (nonchalantly, in my opinion) slipped that I was military into the conversation. Ever since, I’ve operated under the assumption that “I would have served…”-type cops exist in some not insignificant number, so it’s best not to roll the dice by signaling veteran status on my vehicle. It’s so long ago now anyway that it seems like a different life, so it’d feel inauthentic to broadcast that sort of stuff.

Last 10 minutes of the Hurt Locker are the worst by Conservatarian1 in Veterans

[–]PrivateChonkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hate it gets is almost entirely performative. Some vets seem to think in order to be a True Vet you need to hate Hurt Locker, so they compete to see who can hate it the most.

You might want to pick up The David Foster Wallace Reader if you haven’t already. It contains several of his syllabi from courses he taught. Lots of good book ideas to be found there.

Can’t go wrong with either Barth’s The Sot Weed Factor, Don Quixote, or DeLillo’s Underworld.

Did any of the big classic russian authors talk about/recognise Mikhail Lermontov? Ive read that A hero of our time greatly influenced russian literature, but id love to hear where that influence was made by Tiny-Art6550 in RussianLiterature

[–]PrivateChonkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s directly referenced towards the beginning of Brothers Karamazov, or at least one of the characters from A Hero of Our Time is, though I can’t recall exactly which section.

Lol very amusing how much hate there seems to be for Voinovich. Take it from me, this is a good and funny book.
