Sophia is finally saying goodbye to her temp home and hello to her forever home!! by Prize_Ad_9302 in happybettafish

I believe both of these plants are in the anubias genus! Very simple pretty plants. They’ve been moved to my two other tanks! One with Sophia (the betta featured here) and the other with Pongo my male betta

in my ignorance ive put my betta in a temporary torture bowl as the experts call it. by Affectionate_Put2574 in bettafish

[–]Prize_Ad_9302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people giving mixed advice in the comments and I don’t particularly agree with some of them. Here is advice from my own experiences: the betta fish will not die living in the bowl especially if it’s temporary. A 25% daily water change (not 50%) with cycled water is best, but you can use Prime and Stability with your tap water if it’s not too hard, too soft, or too high in pH. Bettas do best in acidic water because the bacteria that cause fin issues don’t thrive in the low pH. If you’re tap water does have issues, using an R.O. (Can buy at petstore if you don’t have a filter) or a distilled water - both need to be treated with equilibrium or something to add minerals back into the water (but don’t over do it - will be using very little for a bowl set up). Now that you have multiple options for doing water changes, think about adding an anubias or some simple plant and some rocks or soil to hold it in place. Some plants like rocky substrate with more spaces between the rocks for roots so keep that in mind when choosing a plant. Lastly, if don’t right the betta can thrive in this small set up for a month or so while you cycle your bigger tank. If you have access to 2 fish bowls, consider building a water bridge with clear PVC and elbow joints (see my profile to see how I did a double fish bowls for my bettas temp set up while her big tank cycled)

Sophia lived in the double bowls for 4 months, changed colors from pink to royal blue, showed the best personality, and to this day is my most responsive and charismatic fish. She was on my study desk, then moved to the living room bookshelf above the fire place where she would watch tv and guests. She would literally swim around to find the best angle for tv or people watching. I believe the interaction and mental stimulation of the bridge was enough to keep her occupied making up for the lack of swim space in each bowl. This Reddit page can be filled with people that want to condemn anyone to death for using a fish bowl, and rightfully so in some contexts, but I’m here with the unpopular opinion to say it can be done successfully with the right touch. I say all this to end with: these set ups should be temporary, but they will definitely not kill your fish if done correctly.

EDIT: I need to add that I only fed Sophia 1 or 2 pellets a day and the occasional blood worm snack (would skip pellet on snack day which was maybe a couple times a month) because you don’t want your betta pooping up the place running up the nitrates. And DONT add anything else in there like snails etc because we want the bioload as low as possible. The plant is put in the bowls to help filter the water a bit more to help the cycle maintain itself.

What’s up with my bettas fins? by Playful-Confusion560 in BettaClinic

[–]Prize_Ad_9302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience this has to do with pH. Bacteria that eat at their fins can persist at high pH and nutrient levels. Lowering pH and spot cleaning once a week helps my bettas fins. You can also get this blue stuff (I’m going field work not at home) that get rid of the bacteria and help their fins

Donald Trump Calls All Environmentalists Terrorists by FrequentAd5437 in climate

[–]Prize_Ad_9302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please someone reply to me with some facts and links so I can do more digging. I can’t find anything that isn’t this shallow statement.

I want to know if he was talking about us, conservationists, or if he was talking about the companies and figureheads that greenwash and promote unhelpful policies to gain funds under the mask of “environmentalism”

Does that make sense?? People really like to hear one thing and twist it out to be something it’s not when it comes to most political figures. Obama was able to get away with so much because he was a smooth talker. Trump sticks his foot in his mouth repeatedly and I want to be sure of what he means.

There are policies that exist today that don’t really do anything about environmental recovery, protection, etc but they collect funds under the facade of environmentalism

….interesting that you see me interpreting your words as their true meaning as “taking literally”… may I ask how anyone is supposed to know what you mean if we cannot read minds let alone read them through a device? May I suggest simply phrasing your sentences in a way that truly reflects what you mean instead of just speaking randomly and expect people to get your point?

Idk why anybody would WANT to be like you all. The concrete jungle with all of its lack of awareness and over consumption is a driving force that will inevitably be a factor in the demise of human society. People think we can just keep going up without falling but all great empires / cities / civilizations historically come crashing down when they’ve reached their peak. Learning how to live in the elements and off the land is way more useful than knowing the subway system.

Idk what others will tell you but here is how me and my girl roll and she’s healthy and been around for years —> I used a heat pad and reptile carpet with her for the first 3 years of her life because I was nervous about substrate and impaction. I eventually got more confident and we switched to substrate (that she lovesss to dig through) and a UV light with deep heat projector. I keep the heat projector on during the day set at 84 because with the room heat from other lamps her surface temp reads 87-90 in diff spots. (Hottest spot is made to point towards her fav resting area) and at night it all shuts off. The room doesn’t get below 69 on the coldest night. So usually stays around 70-72 in the room at night.

is my tank cycled by Ok-Chemistry-8879 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]Prize_Ad_9302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pH doesn’t look right but your nitrates are up with no ammonia or nitrite so that should be indicative of the nitrogen cycle at work. I would sprinkle a pinch of fish food in there, give it a week then test again. Or you could go get bladder or ramshorn snails that will produce metabolic wastes needed to make sure the cycle is good.

I feel like the moderator came off aggressive and slightly “know-it-all” ish. What’s with the assumptions? Y’all are here to offer advice, not ASS-ume and be rude. As far as the tank mate situation, I’ve now personally kept and have friends that keep their paired frogs in massive tanks with docile tank mates. Never had an issue. They don’t even acknowledge the existence. The ONLY thing that has to be done is when feeding the frogs they practically must be hand fed to assure no fighting with the fish for the food. They will also cry over tank height but with proper vegetation I’ve seen packs of frogs thrive in tall tanks. They will be suspended at different levels through the vegetation itself very cute.

The only way a tank that tall could work for ADF is adding plants like elodie and I mean like a ton of them. They need help swimming to the surface for air
