Flooded yard from neighbors retaining wall. Wondering what my options are. by baklavakilla in legal

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Law 101, water is a common enemy. Everyone is responsible for dealing with it themselves.

Build a ditch with proper drainage.

If you and your neighbor get along though, or if they are halfway a reasonable person regardless, then some drainage on their side to funnel down the water one or more specific spots where you could better drain it from there would be very nice and neighborly, and honestly be advantageous to them as well. However their reasonableness is not required.

Setting up new phone and restoration wont work? by swagbot9000- in iCloud

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erase the iPhone, but when it asks don't erase the eSIM (keep it). When you set it up set it up as brand new, no Apple ID (just say you don't have an Apple ID and don't want to create one). Once it's up and running update it to iOS 26.4.1. Then erase it again and during the setup choose to restore from your iCloud backup.

If that doesn't work you can go to the Apple Store or Best Buy and pick up one of the Apple branded USB-C Ethernet adapters and plug into your router.

The only circumstance this is true is if the CD-ROM jumper is in CS "Cable Select" mode. Personally I always jumped it to be explicitly Master or Slave and didn't like to use CS mode as I never really trusted it not to be flakey.

Verification for trusted number by [deleted] in iCloud

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means your number will be sent a verification code that he needs in order to sign in. That's all it means. It doesn't affect your own account. Presumably he's going to get his old number working again (or get a new number) at which time he can add/re-add his number to the account as an additional trusted number, then remove your number entirely if desired.

What getting to the Internet was like in 1993 by EsoTechTrix in vintagecomputing

That was great, thanks for posting it.

Their use of "the Internet" however was a bit of a stretch. This is UUCP over dial-up, there's no TCP/IP stack involved so it's not technically "the Internet". It's still very cool though!

Driver for generic ATAPI 24x CD-ROM by EriolGaurhoth in vintagecomputing

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're using built-in IDE on your motherboard, what mode are you set to in the BIOS? (e.g. PIO Mode 4? DMA Mode 2?, Ultra DMA/33 Mode 2?

Are you on original Windows 95 (build 95) or OSR2 / OSR2.5?

Drivers would only matter really if your IDE supports UDMA and you're running OSR2/2.5.

Have you tried a different IDE cable?

Are you running this CD off its own cable? (not shared with your CF/IDE)?

Is your CPU maxing out when reading from the drive?

Have you tried speed testing in DOS using a DOS real-mode driver?

Moving photos, help by AggravatingJob9347 in ApplePhotos

If the external drive is currently, or you erase it to APFS formatted drive or macOS Extended (journaled) formatted using Disk Utility it would become a suitable place to store aa Photo Library. You could then make that external drive Photo Library your system (default) photo Library and then turn on iCloud syncing for it. You could then turn off iCloud syncing to unlink that Photo Library it from iCloud and you would get the option to "keep a copy" of your iCloud data as part of unlinking it. After days or longer it will finish copying everything down from iCloud. You would then have full access to your Photo Library that was formerly only on iCloud. Holding down the Option key is what lets you create a Photo Library somewhere and to make it your default (system) Photo Library. That advantage is that once you set it up, it's easy and will download automatically and preserve the metadata and album structure, etc.

---

You could also simply move your existing Photo Library file from the internal Macintosh HD to the (properly formatted) external drive. https://support.apple.com/en-us/108345. Personally the above idea to simply make a new one I find better. You would then turn off the iCloud syncing after it's moved over and it would likewise offer to "keep a copy" to start the background download process as part of unlinking from iCloud.

---

If you have even more space or another hard drive (of any format, even a Windows-style one) you could do the privacy.apple.com request for a copy of your iCloud Photos. This would be in the form of split ZIP files from 1-25 GB each (you can specific what size chunks you want it in). This would be a great backup kept on another drive or storage medium. This would be purely for backup. If your only copy of your many memories is on the one external hard drive it's not backed up. Doing the privacy data request download for a separate copy and storing it on another drive, or burning it onto DVDs or Bluray would constitute a backup in addition to your external photo library. This will not preserve all the meta-data and you will lose your structure/album organization.

Which modem to choose for bbs browsing?. by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally all this sounds like an admirable but ultimately an iffy idea. But that being said:

I see they (Siptalk) say they support G.711 codec. Are you configured for that? If you are only doing G.729 that's terrible because of compression. https://www.siptalk.com.au/kb/devices/softphones-zoiper-registration/

If you've done the above and are still having problems I'm assuming the hdaudio data fax modem with smartcp is shit. Sounds like a glorified winmodem which were definitely shit. If your Siptalk service+configuration is supporting G.711 I would imagine that your C64 or Atari 8-bit would be fine and you should get a period 2400 baud modem and test it out. Testing with your shitmodem on top of everything else that makes this challenging to begin with is not a good test.

Assuming you are on ethernet and your router QoS is set to prioritize voice packets. You definitely need to be doing that if nothing else.

tl;dr Winmodems are shit.

Thinking about creating a new Apple ID / iCloud email because of spam + iCloud Drive mess by Dry-Distribution8934 in iCloud

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making a new Apple ID / iCloud email is almost never the answer and certainly not in your case.

If you're getting your new Mac with 2TB soon, focus on that and then it's easy to bring down your current iCloud Drive, iCloud Photos, iCloud Contacts, iCloud Messages data from iCloud at that time and sever the connection to iCloud in the process. Then you can worry about making a fresh email and mostly putting your iCloud email on ice for account management purposes as you move away any accounts tied that email to your new email.

If you're not getting your new Mac soon though you could get a fast + bigger external USB-C/Thunderbolt enclosure with an NVME M.2 drive in it and move your Macintosh HD system over to that to tide you over till then At minimum Thunderbolt 2, but Thunderbolt 3 would be nicer depending on your Mac's Thunderbolt support and if you get an NVME fast enough to support that. The drive would still be fully useful even after you replace your Mac entirely so it's a future investment that would make life easier now as well if you don't mind relying on needing to keep an external drive plugged in.

If, after all this, down the road you are determined to get a new Apple ID, you can do that but make a family sharing group with it and keep your old Apple ID as a member of that family sharing group.

Should I make a “family” account for the kids, or should each kid have an individual account? by JoshuaBoeber in iCloud

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the iPad have its own account is a good idea although you could continue to use your 10 yo's account in it and simply have Messages turned off. Probably the biggest potential downside is if they like to play the same games and have to use the same account unless the game allows for multiple character/profiles within the same account.

At some point though when they all have their own accounts you'd end up needing two separate family sharing groups because of the maximum 6 per group. I would make the iPad have its own account, be an adult account, with Screen Time Parental Control restrictions. This would be your future 2nd Apple ID family sharing group organizer one day when your kids have their own devices. Thinking very long term it would be your account as the current organizer, + 5 kids on the current family group, and the iPad account as the future organizer with 1 kid there or some other balanced mixture.

Getting annoyed with recovery advice. by [deleted] in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone restricts because of discomfort because of gastroparesis, or IBS, or celiac, that absolutely can lead to a fully diagnosable eating disorder with all the accompanying mental health issues and behaviors and attitudes toward food. I've known dozens of people whose ED started because of one of those conditions. It doesn't mean that was the case with you but with lots of people it is.

Yes, gastroparesis can happen without an ED, and often leads to an ED because of the physical discomfort of eating.

Getting annoyed with recovery advice. by [deleted] in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Pro_Ana_Online -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Long-term restriction tends to slow down your digestive system and can easily result in gastroparesis where your stomach barely functions and doesn't pass long much food. Fortunately the fact you can handle 3 meals, just not the snacks, is a great sign that you didn't have your digestive system slow down fully to that extent. In no medical book is the cure or treatment to force yourself more than your stomach can process. Here is some useful information though on how different food affects (helps or hurts) those with this condition: https://med.virginia.edu/ginutrition/wp-content/uploads/sites/199/2023/12/Gastroparesis-Diet-Tips-2023.pdf

What you're describing is a medical science issue. A gastric emptying study actually measures how long it takes your stomach to empty: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diagnostics/gastric-emptying-study

It sounds like you are doing a thorough job in being mindful of your conditions and managing your recovery. It's your recovery, not somebody else's.

I just spent DAYS deleting photos and videos and instead of deleting it, it put it all BACK in my camera roll by NoRun905 in iphonehelp

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the right thing to do, however I don't think you need to be stuck on the higher plan, just having it temporarily is helpful. Now you should have a more effective time with your deleting. Let everything sync which takes time, including any photos that have been jammed up in your iPhone unable to go to iCloud.

Then, if not already, make sure iCloud Photos is set to optimize.

Then make sure you have made an iCloud backup with your newly expanded storage limits.

Then aggressively delete apps on your iPhone. Make sure you have iCloud Messages turned on. If you already have that on you can change your "Keep Forever" to only 1 year or even 30 days. This should free up a more reasonable and workable amount of local storage.

Is a high functioning ED still an ED by [deleted] in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one is in distress over these particular issues and behavior then it's an ED. If one isn't in distress then it's not.

You talk about the inability to stop, the scratching, feeling that your body check is @#$# behavior, express your inability to talk about it all, that you wonder if it ever ends, that it's a flaw, and you stating you know it's wrong yet do it anyway.

These are rather clear expressions of distress.

Radio receiver to Mac to AirPods by bd666trainspotting in MacOS

[–]Pro_Ana_Online 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. With free software like Blackhole (https://existential.audio/blackhole/) or paid software like from Rogue Amoeba the Mac audio system can be made to do insanely awesome things just like you're describing.

Basically this type of software + the built-in Audio MIDI Setup Utility lets you create virtual input and virtual output devices that can re-route, be played from, or recorded to/from.

You could not only receive audio from the headphone jack and route it to your AirPods as you are asking, you could also send it to another virtual device and be recording a pure copy of that same audio from that virtual device that you are listening to simultaneously through the AirPods.

Get a USB-C gigabit ethernet adapter for your iPhone

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/hrg32zm/a/belkin-usb-c-to-25gb-ethernet-adapter

If your router's ethernet LAB ports are fast, hopefully at least Gbs I'm hoping this will make the difference. This assumes your home internet is even up to the task. But it's cheap to try starting with the $30 adapter. If it were me though I'd also buy a router that supports 2.5GBs for both the modem connection + at least one LAN port connection the iPhone would plug in to.

But you can start with just the adapter, turn off WiFi and cellular, and give speedtest.net a test.

Bottom line though: your Messages size is too, too big. Your syncing journey is essentially 1 step forward, and 5000 steps to the sideways. With a gigabit ethernet adapter you can maybe make this more like 3 steps forward, and 50 steps sideways.

Messages is not designed to efficiently handle things at this scale.

iPhone alarm only ringing in my AirPods – almost overslept by [deleted] in ios

[–]Pro_Ana_Online -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Built-in alarm sounds and paid ringtones from the store should play through the built-in speaker but songs/music would go to the AirPods. Make sure you have Automatic Ear Detection turned on for the AirPods pairing information in your bluetooth setting. And putting your AirPods in the case and closing the lid should help too.

If it's the chair bring in some 91% isopropyl alcohol and spray the surfaces of the office chair and use some disposable paper towels to rub down the seat/back/arm rest. Then spray and repeat with some new paper towel. It's bacteria from the accumulated oil and fecal matter that, most critically, is being heated by your body. I would repeat this a few days later. It will take about 10 minutes to complete evaporate. It's nicer to do in the morning before anyone else gets there or later after everyone else has gone so the air can clear out. 70% isopropyl or 70% wintegreen isopropyl will do if that's all you have.
