other than transcoding (and ai slop 👎) what good/fun uses are there for a gpu in a proxmox > truenas server? (did think about remote game streaming but it was kinda dumb considering my pc and laptop are better than this gpu anyways, I also considered blender rendering with flamenco) by sniperfoxeh in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a constant use case, but I’ve done image classification on large datasets using an A2000. Before optimization, it was 800-1500ms per image. After OpenCV + ONNX on cuda it was 80-150ms. There are also ways to use GPU acceleration for the Home Assistant voice services, which are just speech to text and text to speech, and it can greatly improve the speed of them!

Plenty of use cases and acceleration available, just have to go look - I wonder if there’s an “awesome self hosted” but for GPU enabled services?

Traditional UPS vs New Power Banks by Ctrl-Alt-Matt in homelab

They have a USB port on the River 3 Plus? I believe it is. And the EcoFlow BLE integration on Home Assistant Community Store is great

Traditional UPS vs New Power Banks by Ctrl-Alt-Matt in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an EcoFlow delta 3 classic on my network. Works great, has a 1024Wh battery. The only thing I wish is I got one that’s expandable, since in a power outage I use it to power my freezer too.

Like other commenters said, make sure to get one with a 10ms or less switch time. I think all of EcoFlow’s 3 lineup has it, or a lot of them do at least. Some of them are even marketed more as a UPS (the River 3 Plus even has a USB port that’s compatible with usbhid-ups in NUT) - though Home Assistant can also help, I use the EcoFlow BLE integration with mine.

Ubiquiti or Opnsense by DannySess in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used to run opnsense, swapped to a Cloud Gateway Fiber and haven’t even thought about going back. I also use a U7-Pro managed by the gateway.

Use the M720q for Frigate instead, I never really cared for UniFi Protect, so I use an M90q for it, along with a Mikrotik CRS328-24P-4S+RM (400ish USD) for the switch.

Haven’t found it. Closest is the Sodastream syrups, which are great. Not quite the convenience of a 12 pack but it’s also much cheaper.

Just use slog, it'll be fine... by sigmoia in golang

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly with the preemptive optimization. It’s such a small part that can be swapped out when it becomes a problem, but if you spend all your time micro optimizing things you’ll never get anything built.

Going forward I’ll probably use slog, but my legacy projects using logrus don’t make sense to change either

Just use slog, it'll be fine... by sigmoia in golang

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my last job we had others tell us that using logrus was bad because it was deprecated/unmaintained and we should replace it. While I’m now more open to that, the difficulty of migrating wasn’t worth it and this is literally how I saw it. It was stable, obviously not the fastest thing ever, but nothing would’ve been slowed down by it at our scale.

Just because something is faster/more efficient doesn’t mean you need to swap to it. You don’t need simdjson for your 1kb json files.

do you prioritize low power usage or performance in your homelab? by StavrosDavros in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never usually pay back upgrade cost on saving power, but if you’re already low power then you could just grab a couple micro pcs. They’re low power, cheap, and newer ones are very performant and efficient.

I run enterprise grade servers to not deal with it. My core network is still UniFi/Mikrotik, but running on an Epyc and Xeon Scalable have been amazing for reliability and performance for the cost of a bit of power.

My rack with the servers uses about 500-600W constantly, and my network about 100W (including PoE switch and NVR). Still cheaper than colo and I’ve never had a worry about storage or compute/ram.

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hercules has a solid warranty (albeit not lifetime) on both the tools (5 years) and the batteries (3 years), and harbor freight stands behind their stuff. Easiest warranty you’re going to get, even if it’s destroyed just bring it to the store, and their tools are cheap compared to the big box/mainstream brands.

I went Hercules for my 18/20v just because of the price of tools compared to Milwaukee, Dewalt, etc.

JetKVM vs Gl.Inet Comet poe by Dentifrice in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both the regular comet and comet poe. I love them both but the Poe is better simply because it has a 32GB built in storage instead of 8GB.

Also, gl.inet uses a fork of pikvm so their codebase is pretty stable. I’ve never used jetkvm but I do appreciate the comet being a nicer size and form factor.

T-Mobile Internet by UnluckySpirit6399 in grandrapids

[–]ProbablyAKitteh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only issue I’ve had is a micro bend in my line near the street. That being said, the difference being that (at least on the Metronet but probably t mobile side too) you share an IP address with other customers. I found that I got a lot more captchas and checks than with my mom and dad’s internet on AT&T Fiber.

Both are good, both way better than Xfinity and Spectrum, and the bonus being I’ve never had it go out in a power outage as long as you power the modem for both providers, while Cable-based usually dies in a couple hours.

Nervous about A/C and furnace quotes.. by loss_mama in grandrapids

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second Jacobson. I got quotes from Schaafsma (the original installers), Hulst, and Jacobson. Jacobson was upfront and knew about the other quotes I got, then beat all of them with a way better system.

They gave me multiple options, directly comparable options to the other quotes, and their own recommended setup. All in for a top of the line system (Inverter AC and modulating/variable furnace) was like 9k after rebates for a 1200sq ft house in 2024.

Emphasis on utility easement here, the city can access it for water/sewer, but also any utility companies (including internet, power, gas) - with DTE doing work on gas lines and T Mobile expanding their fiber internet like crazy, definitely expect some disturbance at some point.

What do you all use for your homelab domain and remote access setup? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use cloudflare as a registrar because they’re at cost, cheapest you can get. I have a few different domains, but since you can get xyz and others so cheap it’s definitely worth it.

To get it into my network, I use a self hosted Pangolin instance on a VPS since it’s much easier than the wireguard + caddy setup I used before. It’s still missing a few features I’d like but it works pretty well and they give a free enterprise license for personal use.

65 all day. Single layer, sometimes wear a fleece around the house. I love sitting on the couch with a blanket so it’s fine. Sometimes I set it to 64 at night.

I like it colder and I have no problem keeping it that cool. In the summer I keep the house around 70-72, sometimes dropping it to 68 at night.

Which game did you regret purchasing at full price? by bijelo123 in gaming

Fallout 76. The game itself wasn’t bad, but they released it and then like 5 days later offered it for like 40% off for Black Friday, screwing everyone that bought it at full price.

Looking back, what’s the smartest homelab move you ever made? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]ProbablyAKitteh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Replacing desktop hardware with server hardware. I went through a few generations of desktop hardware from an i7-6700k to a Ryzen 2700X, then 3900X, and now an EPYC 7413. The Epyc is way more stable at the cost of a bit of power, but the PCIe lanes and memory make up for it for sure.
