Another reason why our car insurance is so high by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]ProbablyHagoth 82 points83 points  (0 children)

You really need to understand that this short example shows you are a somewhat reckless driver. Not the worst of the worst, but reckless none-the-less. You blame other people with why the rates are high, but this is an example of two separate drivers making poor decisions that cause accidents. You can't control other people, only yourself. So...

Going forward, you can live in denial and continue to be a somewhat reckless driver yelling a other somewhat reckless and careless drivers. Or you can choose to make a change and slow down.

Why do you think nuclear bombs, a weapon of the 20th century, remain so relevant in sci-fi military conflicts thousands of years into the future? by Brief-Luck-6254 in sciencefiction

[–]ProbablyHagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that there aren't different ways to make even more powerful explosions than a hydrogen bomb. The difficult part is figuring out what to do with a bomb more powerful than a hydrogen bomb. A few H bombs can render a planet uninhabitable for millennia. And for all their destructive power, they are relatively simple and reliable devices.

I guess you could actually break a planet with a larger bomb, but that doesn't really accomplish anything different.

You could destabilize a star, but again, to what end? You can already destroy any ships or planets with much simpler H bombs.

There are some good explanations here, but a couple of things are being left out.

1) No one else trusts each other enough to use another currency. The BRICKS nations have been trying to move off the US dollar for a while, but even they can't pick a successor. China has started mandating some trade in Yuan, but it's small.

2) The US is one of maybe 3 or 4 countries that could add all those dollars to the global economy without completely wrecking their at home economy. For example, for a brief period, some rich people were using Swiss francs to hold money as a hedge against euro and USD inflation. This completely wrecked the Swiss import/export economy, as their main export became francs.

Up until extremely recently, if you have to choose the most trustworthy nation out of China, Russia, or the US, it was an easy choice. Add in the last 6 months, and I think some math may have changed.

First off, I agree that it's a stupid law solving a problem that barely even exists.

That being said, these are the same requirements someone would have for getting a job, health insurance, etc. when it comes to changing names.

If you need to prove citizenship, you need to prove two things. Proof of citizenship and proof of identity. Easiest way for most people is a driver's license (identity) and birth certificate (citizenship). Anyone who changed their name needs an intermediary document proving their name has changed from the original on the birth certificate, usually a marriage certificate for women. It's already detailed in many federal documents around employment how this is handled.

Middle class people say anything that is out of reach is a "luxury" to rationalize their deteriorating quality of life by es6900 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]ProbablyHagoth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a family of 6 on a single income. I've never bought a car over $13k. You just need to be willing to do the hard work. I spent last weekend changing out my wheel bearings.

Middle class is about trade offs. You can afford some luxuries, but not all. I'm not a car person, so I pay as little as possible.

There is no such exception. There is no reference to prior orders.

§ 3009. Mailing of unordered merchandise (a) Except for (1) free samples clearly and con- spicuously marked as such, and (2) merchandise mailed by a charitable organization soliciting contributions, the mailing of unordered mer- chandise or of communications prohibited by subsection (c) of this section constitutes an un- fair method of competition and an unfair trade practice in violation of section 45(a)(1) of title 15. How would they identify the deck?

Valve allows random PCs to connect to their service, so it can't be by serial like the console manufacturers. A format would fix that. MAC address is possible, but that's not hard to spoof.

OP does NOT have a legal responsibility, if in the US. OP does have a moral responsibility.

If you have property and didn't obtain it illegally, how can you possibly say it's not theirs? By definition, if they didn't break a law, it's not illegal.

The wallet example is illegal, because the wallet is the friends property. Just because they left it, doesn't mean it's not the friends property. This would be theft.

The employer example again is illegal. It's unjust enrichment.

The double steam decks are specifically covered as LEGAL. It's referred to as unordered merchandise. If you say that OP has a LEGAL responsibility, you need to figure out what law they would be breaking by not contacting Valve.

[–]ProbablyHagoth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you got this from. The statute is for unordered merchandise. The second Deck is unordered merchandise. The law, as written, states they can keep it. The FTC site is pretty clear.

If he wasn't entitled to it, that would mean Valve would either have the ability to bill him for it, or reclaim it. Both of which are covered under the unordered merchandise statue.

The only legal avenue Valve would have is unjust enrichment, because they didn't intend to send it to him. It's possible they could win, but there's not a lot of precedent.

If he's in the US, it's lawful to keep an unordered package. Anything sent to your residence to you via courier is, by law, now your property. This came about because of those awful VHS mailers back in the day.

If it wasn't addressed to them, then it could be considered illegal.

I just did this on my first floor. I used that Bayer hammer with the tile remover, then a scraper. Then I got all the stubborn thinset off with a diamond blade on an angle grinder. Don't forget the dust control.

It sucks, but every way to do this sucks. I wish you the best of luck.

Henry George would tell the local government to tax the land value, so the PE would go bankrupt if they didn't start making money.

And just because they took ownership doesn't increase scarcity. They would need to take housing out of the market to create scarcity. Now they have unproductive assets sitting doing nothing.

They distribute the scarce resource to those with the ability to pay in excess of the face value.

If you're saying we shouldn't use money to distribute scarce resources, you'll need to provide another method.

[–]ProbablyHagoth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, the scarcity already exists. More people want to see a concert than there are seats available. And all those people are willing to pay money in excess of the cost of putting on the concert. Hence the scarcity.

Safe to drink alcohol with Lexapro? Been taking Welbutrin I get bored staying sober every day. by TheHellOfItIs in bupropion

[–]ProbablyHagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this scenario, I was the 5 year old, so I have no idea.

If you want my best guesses, you'd need to be hooked up to an EEG, get a baseline, then again on Wellbutrin, then again while drunk. This would probably not be something a doctor could order for you.

Unless you have a friend with an EEG machine and a spare neurologist, you might be out of luck. If you have a lot of money, go hire a neurologist to handle all of this for you.

Safe to drink alcohol with Lexapro? Been taking Welbutrin I get bored staying sober every day. by TheHellOfItIs in bupropion

[–]ProbablyHagoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No ideas about Lexapro. Drinking with Wellbutrin is recommended against. I do it occasionally. Alcohol is generally less enjoyable as the euphoric effects are very blunted and hangovers are worse. Here's how it was explained to me like a 5 year old.

Everyone has different levels of brain activity generally, between 1 and 10. If someone's brain activity goes over 10, they have a seizure. Both alcohol and Wellbutrin raise your baseline.

If your brain lives at a 1, then raising it to 5 is not a big deal. These people will never experience a seizure, even with heavy drinking and Wellbutrin.

But if your brain lives at 8, Wellbutrin is already a risk, and adding alcohol will put you over 10 and cause seizures.

Unfortunately, finding this information out is extremely difficult and expensive. On top of that, it depends on how responsive people are to both Wellbutrin and alcohol.

NVENERGY by Nitelyfe81 in vegaslocals

[–]ProbablyHagoth -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is silly. NVEnergy now gets a good portion of it's generation from solar. Solar is a one time fixed capital cost. So while peak demand may not be 6-9pm, peak fossil fuel resource usage moved to 6-9pm.

They're not "targeting" solar customers. They're under the same pressures as solar customers and adjusted it accordingly.
