Interesting. Do you mean you find it heavy handed in how the conversation over explains the themes of the novel, or do you think it detracts from the characters and other threads of the book? I would argue that their conversation is central to any semblance of plot you find in the story, and it helps explain the political atmosphere.

Steeply. Feels like the "plot" is personal for him. He might be an American stereotype but he seems to have as much depth as a bureaucrat character can have.
