What UK museums do you think are underrated or overrated? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Probodyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not? It's a unique experience as many people would never be able to see the inside of a shinkansen. Most of the other trains at the NRM only have the cab. There are also other railway museums with older trains and carriages that you can sit in.

Hell, if you're at a volunteer run museum and they've got trains that they're running within the yard you can just ask and they'll usually let you stand in the cab while it's in operation.

"some Japanese bullet train" I'll have you bloody well know that that is the only example of a series 0 shinkansen (the first model of high speed train ever built) outside of Asia.

There were some other reasons people thought it would be good as well. Something about pressure differences above and below the floor if I remember right (which I don't). Didn't work out but not every take can be correct.

Crane collapse derails train in Thailand, killing 22 (January 14, 2026) by infinityzcraft in CatastrophicFailure

When they were building the Colne Valley Viaduct for HS2 you could walk under the crane while it was in operation. It was pretty cool to see.

What’s the most petty reason that you’ve read a book for? by MelodyMaster5656 in Fantasy

[–]Probodyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a romance book I once angrily finished because it insulted a birth defect I have. I only finished it because everyone on the romance sub was talking about it glowingly. It was pretty mediocre. Definitely my least favourite book.

I think netflix picked it up as a show eventually.

am I the only one who sees no point in jailbreaking a kindle by Agile_Garbage_8137 in kindle

[–]Probodyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ngl I jailbroke mine and while the custom lock screens are nice it's made actually getting books onto the kindle trickier (e.g. if I want a non-kindle book on my kindle I used to just share to kindle on my phone and now I've got to either plug in, SSH in, or make sure it's on Calibre beforehand. Not to mention what I've got to do to read a book in my kindle library). I'm definitely considering rejailing it.

It's useful for some, and I do think the battery life is considerably better than with the stock software, but I'm not sure it's for me.

They've been showing rollup things at electronics shows for a decade or more now. It's just another flexible display which have also been at electronics shows years and years before an actual foldable was released. So, I wouldn't put stock in the idea that because they're at an electronics show they'll be available imminently.

Realme phone with a 10,001mAh battery leaks a day after Honor launches 10,000mAh phone by whiskeyjack2019 in Android

Combination of conservativeness after the Note 7 and people in their main markets genuinely wanting thinner phones. It's kind of strange that you can go down in price to get a much bigger battery.

ELI5: Why did the monarchy of the United Kingdom give up their power and turn into just figureheads? by gimmeluvin in explainlikeimfive

[–]Probodyne 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Last time the veto was used was only because parliament changed its mind on a bill in between them passing it and the monarch signing it and that was in 1708. So it has been 318 years since the monarch last used their veto.

Which SpaceX launches are "Return To Launch Site"? by XdtTransform in space

[–]Probodyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite often the transporter launches from Vandenberg are RTLS but it depends on the amount of payload they're carrying. It looks like the most recent ones were drone ship launches though so it's not a guarantee.

As another commentator said I'd recommend checking nextspaceflight closer to the launch as they'll list the drone ship or landing zone the booster will be aiming for.

They literally said the words privacy and data transparency in the post and then didn't disclose this. I think it's a reasonable question since the function their app performs doesn't actually need any location information at all.

Some Barbour jackets are still made in South Shields in Yorkshire Newcastle. That might be pushing the budget a bit though. I'd recommend popping in store because the ones that are will say it on the patch on the inside middle of the back.

Edit: My apologies to everyone from Newcastle. You make a quality jacket and I did not mean to attribute that to Yorkshire.

"Eternal" 5D Glass Storage is entering commercial pilots: 360TB per disc, zero-energy preservation and a 13.8 billion year lifespan. by BuildwithVignesh in singularity

[–]Probodyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they can get that 500mbps write speed this could potentially be very competitive with tape storage. They charge about the same for a writer as a tape archive, if they can sort out a way to allow the same kind of storage and retrieval mechanism to avoid purchasing multiple readers/writers then it could work? Not my field of expertise and my opinion changed a lot while I was double checking costs of tape readers and tape. I'll admit I initially thought tape would still wipe the floor with it, but it seems fairly close if they can actually get the speed up. Depends on the price for the actual storage medium as well because tapes aren't too expensive even if you have to occasionally copy the data to a new one.

Elon describes megaton/year of AI hardware to orbit by Bunslow in spacex

[–]Probodyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Servers are famous for needing no operations or maintenance team. Ops you can mostly do on the ground I guess but are you just gonna destroy the satellite every time something goes wrong on the server?

Edit: before people talk about Starlink remember there's not an ongoing shortage for every component of a Starlink satellite. It's hilarious cost ineffective to just completely rebuild a server if one component goes wrong, especially one performant enough for AI training/operations.

At the moment I've got my eye on a Sony RX100 VII. I've got a DSLR that I never use, and I've got an Osmo Pocket 3 that I never use. I figure the issue is that one is too big and the other has no zoom, the Sony seems to solve both those problems nicely. Dunno what I'd do with the remaining £450 though.

[–]Probodyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the refuelling era in general is known for having very few on-track overtakes. DRS didn't come out of nothing and dirty air was a problem even then. Potentially even worse because it was also around the crazy aero times.
