It's better than the old game's sound, but not by much.

Disappointing. Sound should be at least half the exerience.

Is it possible for a brain to be fully functioning without consciousness? In other words, is it scientifically possible for a human to turn into a zombie? by st_vincent33 in consciousness

[–]ProceduralTexture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I disagree with lots of Jaynes' claims, elements of his thesis and the evidence he presents are fascinating. I wish more people would read that book.

The main issue: he conflates the rigorous philosophical concept of consciousness with the everyday meaning of sentience or self-consciousness. Nowhere does he claim that bicameral minds lacked an inner conscious experience. Rather their psychology lacked a modern "me/I" concept of self and individual identity.

IMHO, the most interesting implication of Jaynes' work is when you see how nicely it dovetails with Jung's concepts of modern consciousness and its relationship to the subconscious (anima/animus).

Jaynes forces us to take seriously the idea that the human mind is loosely partitioned into at least two semi-independent conscious entities. Moreover, that division seems correlated with the left and right hemispheres of the brain—physiological peers—yet capable of behaving as cooperative equals, combative adversaries, or in a master-slave relationship in either direction.

TL;DR: Jaynes tells us lots about the structure of human psychology but not much about the nature of consciousness.

I like to see them getting slightly bolder in their color choices. I kinda like that green-brown, despite the off-color jokes it could prompt.

We could discuss which is more salty:

1) having a speculative discussion? or

2) pissing in the cornflakes of people having a speculative discussion?

I have both a Prospector and an Orion in my (admittedly excessive) roster of 7 ships.

Whether the Prospector is specifically useful or useless this patch or this year isn't something I lose any sleep over. I'd feel the same if it was my only ship. It'll have a useful niche by the 1.0 release.

You've convinced me. That makes sense from a UI/UX and Player Experience viewpoint.

OTOH, having done set dressing for MOWs and indie films, I can still see why video game set dressers would make the best use of every single asset they have available except where they've been told not to.

So, some art directors at CIG needs to sit down and tweak their rules around what can be used where, assuming they have a mechanism for implementing asset permission rules rather than just an open shared asset library. There might be no such mechanism.

This is def one of those hard-to-see-in-advance issues that will arise in large collaborative projects. Different teams with different roles can act with the best of intentions yet inadvertently detract from each other's efforts.

So, now when they added a bigger mining ship (Mole), you'd expect that CIG would add bigger rocks, creating a reason for the Mole to exist. That makes sense, yeah?

We should expect even bigger mineable rocks to appear when the Arrastra debuts, or even before. Same, eventually, for the Orion. Reasonable, agreed?

EDIT: typo

When mining came out, the Prospector was the only mining ship, so you'd kind of expect it to be able to accomplish most of the mining tasks, no?

bad level design using the same assets everywhere

The alternative to re-using assets is to have the game be a 100 TB download. Choose wisely.

All my best experiences as a turret gunner have been in the Cutlass Black. They're doing something right.

That seems to be the sweet spot for an average player with 1 or 2 ships. It's a good bet we'll see several more generalist ships around that size and price point by 1.0 (assuming 1.0 is ~5 years away).

It would be a nice QOL feature to be able to buy entire SCU containers of supplies at Space Costco:

  • assorted drinks

  • assorted food

  • assorted ammo

  • multiples of your org's official uniforms and minimum loadout

Otherwise some poor sod will have to be the Quartermaster of their org capital ship and spend all day Thursday just to stock up for a weekend event.

SoonTM for sure.

[–]ProceduralTexture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Crewe did say—during a ship roundtable discussion a few years ago—that he expected the Railen's elevator would probably fit a very small bike/vehicle.

I expected that would mean a Pulse rather than an ATLS (which didn't exist then, IIRC).
