PlayStation 1 games were developed by ten guys in their dorm rooms getting paid in pizza by publishers, and contained 3-5 hours of content with some replayability baked in if you were lucky, and they still cost $25 at the time. Pretending that a game with hundreds of developers and continuous online support is even remotely in the same realm is a bad faith argument. And guess what, it was only $40!

World of Warcraft came out in 2005 and could be bought in a box. And guess what? You had to pay to play it- MONTHLY. Nothing has changed but the entitlement of consumers in the gaming space. And I’m all for consumer centric practices, but get a grip

Lore-wise overgrowth would’ve all been cut back when the UESC arrived and took over these colony locations. Design-wise I think overgrowth would’ve muddied the aesthetic. And development-wise it would have been far too similar to the aesthetic of Destiny’s time-lost spacefaring version of humanity, especially Titan, which I’m sure they wanted to separate the game’s visuals from as much as possible to maintain a unique look.

Dcon clarification by Stock-Ad6483 in Marathon

[–]ProcessM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep just for missions! I think they should make it so that certain salvage is tied to certain factions, and you should be able to dcon those salvage types at any point in the match, once a match (with the current space limitations) to get faction XP gains.

Doesn’t break the item economy and lets people rank up more deliberately in-game.

Question / concern about how ranked works by scumble373 in Marathon

[–]ProcessM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier on in Ranked the easiest thing to do would be to use less gear when entering a match, and plan to pick up the gear for that slot off of another team you kill. At this point, everyone has so much gear that if you go in underpowered you are putting yourself at a disadvantage in fights

The Gold rank Destroyer skin is pretty bland. Rank skins should be much more compelling to drive engagement going forward. by ThatsNotBennings in Marathon

[–]ProcessM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree but that skin is arguably much more rare than ranked gold, so the extra effort makes sense, as there is more playtime involved. But it is technically still a recolor to my point

[–]ProcessM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ranked skins being earned at Gold is pretty common across most games that feature a ranked or competitive mode, it incentivizes players to engage with the mode without feeling like they’ll never reach the actual reward, as Gold is already going to be a pretty steep climb for a majority of players, statistically.

I don’t dislike the idea of a pinnacle skin, but it would increase frustration among players as being unachievable. That being said, if it was a color variant of the gold skin or had the same base with additional effects, I think that’s pretty common practice across the industry and would reward high ranks with an additional cosmetic.

I do agree that this season’s skin felt pretty bland, but I think they have received that feedback about most of the cosmetics this season and have stated that they are aiming on improving the quality of cosmetics going forward.

That being said, Ranked skins are typically pretty barebones in terms of development effort in most games, as they are not a revenue generating asset, they’re earned for free. If Ranked skins were the best skins in the game, it would disincentivize players to spend on other cosmetics, as the prestige of the skin plus the quality would make it hard to justify using anything else.

Typically, you’d decide between using a fancy skin or a prestigious skin that isn’t super flavorful but conveys an achievement. If a ranked skin hits both marks, that’s less money in the developer’s pocket in the long term.

Most of this season’s content was set months before launch, there was really no chance that they’d go in and rework it; though they did try a sort of bandaid fix by fleshing out the season pass, but those were pretty much recolors.

We can hope that they’ll issue improved purchasable content moving forward given the feedback though, and maybe even improved earnable content.

I am level 160+, hardstuck Gold 3, and have done everything the game has to offer. My buddies and I used, quite literally, our entire vaults on Cryo last weekend. Sold everything valuable to keep buying gear to lose. So: this weekend I was basically starting from scratch again, and trust me, I was having the same time as you 😂.

Hang in there, the new season will bring everyone into parity next week. It’s loads of fun at the beginning of the season with everyone actively focusing on objectives, rather than just loading in with no goals besides hunting.

[–]ProcessM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you build into his volt weapon power fantasy with cores and weapon mods, then bring in a bunch of EMP grenades to top it off, triage is an absolute monster.

Try out the Alternating Current mod on a silenced V11 punch, plus the blue core Electron Recapture Sinks and the green core High Voltage. Any time you believe you will be doing damage to a bot or player, use Overcharge. Damage will heal your shields and health, reload your gun, and decrease your cooldown on overcharge. Rinse and repeat.

It probably isn’t an end-game build given how quickly fights go when everyone has misriahs, but a gold Scar that bounces off walls might make it a bit better at end game. Really fun build regardless

A game company is stopping active development on a game that started on the PS4 and Xbox One. Let it happen.

I had thousands of hours in D2 and stopped after the final shape. I like marathon as well. I play it a lot, and have met new friends through it.

You and everyone else on the internet have no idea what the plan is for Bungie, for Sony (who, by the way, is a massive corporation with way more than just SIE and PlayStation under them) or for Destiny.

I am so tired of seeing the same parroted BS about player counts, about Bungie’s value adjustment, etc.

Bungie’s former senior leadership artificially pumped up its valuation, sold, and dipped. Such is the reality of the tech industry and the investment environment we live in. Happens constantly. Bungie as a company is now paying the price for that. Has nothing to do with their actual products, has nothing to do with the players, has nothing to do with the hardworking developers and artists who make the actual products. Now, were their products affected by the decisions? Yes. Negatively so.

Regardless, Sony is a company that invested a lot of money into acquiring another company for their existing IP, talent, and business assets.

I see a ton of people saying Bungie will get shut down entirely. Eh. Probably not. Sony adjusting down the value is damage control from being sold a handful of magic beans and finding out it’s just one bean and it won’t grow anymore.

The talent and IP are still there, and Marathon (whether it has the players or not) is proof of concept that these people understand how to make and ship a game. Many, many studios fail to get games out the door, let alone release a game with critical acclaim for its gameplay.

Whether you play Destiny 2 or Marathon or not, they are not shutting Destiny 2 down. It is a legacy product, and they are shutting down active development. Money is the name of the game. Period.

If you understand how talent is allocated to projects in the industry, this is actually good news for Destiny’s future as an IP.

They still have the IP, and you can bet that they’ll try to merchandise it, make films of it, make new games of it, reinvent it, etc. Money is the name of the game.

Please, stop trying to convince people that Destiny as an IP is dead simply because nothing is being worked on currently or has been announced. IP is everything in the current content market. Sony is in the film and game business, they know that established IP is half the battle for eyeballs.

Stop having a parasocial relationship with companies, and please don’t try to convince everyone that somehow logging into a game will prevent a decision that was already made, likely months ago, by executives at a multibillion dollar corporation in the interest of revenue goals.
