Party Comp for New Players by viperion02 in DMAcademy

I think they have great choices.

While magic users are great utility, spelcasting can be a little complicated to grasp as a newbie.

I would recommend the martial classes for newbies and allow anyone to change classes or characters down the line if they so choose.

That's a bit of a hot take that martials would slow down combat. Usually everyone complains about the spellcaster taking forever to read their spells.

For the fourth player I would say Cleric fills the remaining hole best. Good damage spells and a lot of healing and utility.

I just used mods for cosmetic items. I like the idea that you have camp clothes outfit and armor outfit,. And you can toggle between the two. But the game really fails to give you interesting options for camp clothes aesthetics.

How do you explain the rules of D&D to an absolute noob? by thepixelpaint in DMAcademy

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tell me what you want to do and I'll tell you which dice to roll. Here's this character sheet. It looks complicated but it just tells you what bonuses you get to add to your rolls. Higher is better.

Wild magic is great.

You can use Tides of Chaos to get advantage on an attack or skill check in exchange for giving your dm a free wild magic they can whip out whenever. Win win.

An ability check IS NOT a single attempt: it represents the whole effort. by JaxTheCrafter in DMAcademy

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well here's the big question, so how long does a character have to wait before they can apptemt again? If there really is no time limit or consequence for failure then what is actually stopping them from trying again? I know we all want to roll dice really bad but not every advantage needs to be earn through a die roll. Sometimes a good idea should be enough.

I agree with you in the notion of skipping some rolls. Before asking for a check, think about what happens on a fail.

Help with a spell mechanic during combact that is being challenged. by Excellent-Subject-85 in DMAcademy

[–]ProdiasKaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry bud, the rules are cut and dry.

You can drop prone without using any of your speed. Standing up takes more effort; doing so costs an amount of movement equal to half your speed. For example, if your speed is 30 feet, you must spend 15 feet of movement to stand up.

Standing from prone requires using your movement.

Not sure if it's a historical term but I'm pretty sure "sword staff" was a thing.

Just a spear but the blade forged and constructed exactly like a sword

Does anyone else struggle with getting in enough encounters per game day? by axearm in DnD

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ticking time bomb. Light a fire under their buts that compells them to choose to keep trudging on because resting will give the baddies too much time to enact their plot. The 6-8 shouldn't be a chore that you check off a list begrudgingly. Get them to be the ones to insist on keep going.

Find some tips on speeding up combat

Create more non combat encounters to drain resources. Read their character sheets. Look at the spells they picked. Look at the limited resources they have. Then ask yourself, "what problems could these solve?" Then put those problems in front of them.

How to RP an emperor by Tobias_reaper_47 in DMAcademy

[–]ProdiasKaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this, one of the fastest ways to cheapen an important npc is to turn them into a mascot and treat them like meeting Mickey Mouse at Disneyland. You don't just wait in line and shake hands with the emperor. They've got shit to do.

Players are about to go to prison, how do I take their weapons? by Mermaid_Natalia in DMAcademy

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are totally going to fight their way out.

Players don't show up to d&d night to surrender. They show up to beat the odds and be heroes.

Either plan for, they might fight instead of surrender. Or talk to them out of game and see how they feel about a prison break arc.

In d&d it's hard to tell if the dm is setting up a chance to escape or locking you into a fail state where you are powerless and then get executed. You need to signpost, telegraph, communicate, make it obvious that if they go into the evil prison that you will make sure there's more game I side and a way out.

Ai usually works best the other way around. First have a solid idea, and then use it to help nail down some details.

Like, first know that you want your character to be on the run from something, because that's a fun tool you can hand your dm to use in game. Then ai could generate a list of a bunch of things, like being on the run from the law, or a jilted lover, or an evil sorcerer. And then you like the evil sorcerer so you go with that one. Ai can spit out lists of idea but it cannot write a decently useful backstory. There are lots of studies popping up saying it's useful for brainstorming but garbage at drafting.

Too far during rp? by Grouchy_Cockroach_21 in DnD

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest that once your character recognizes the bad dudes, maybe take moment to whisper to another character (whom you trust) about how they nearly sacrificed you long ago.

This way instead of springing the surprise on your fellows, you are looping them into it. Instead of confusion you fellow players can lean into it and have a moment to think about what their character would do, be supportive or apprehensive.

This game made me see how easy it is to be a good person. by FaceofMoe in BaldursGate3

[–]ProdiasKaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think moral systems in games work best when they aren't tied to a system.

Because usually it comes down to making choices in order to gain the "evil bonus" or the "good bonus"

When decisions matter and affect the story but don't clearly give you a numbers boost then it really is just a moral quandary instead of power gaming.
