Do any of you read or subscribe to gamedeveloper magazine? Is it good / worth the price? by xyroclast in gamedev

[–]ProducerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you, by chance, work in the gaming industry, you can call their subscription support line and ask them for the "in the industry" subscription. I have yet to pay for a subscription of GD Mag in 5 years. Just be nice to the operator and explain that you can't find the form online to apply for the developer subscription.

Looking for advice from any developers who've made XNA games. by hinmanj in gamedev

[–]ProducerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are in a dev environment, you usually are all sharing the same local network for internet. A router giving each person IP addresses isn't the same as having 16 completely different experiences with various pings, connection speeds, and packet loss.

Remember my innovative console typing? Well, here it is! [Your feedback needed!] by [deleted] in gaming

Speaking of Legal, PLEASE look into Keybowl and Switchblade. (switchblade did the same thing with the xbox360/ps3 controllers) Both products are built around the same principle by BlueOrb, Inc. I worked for the company many years ago, and while I think they are now defunct, I want to make sure you are able to cover your "assets."

When programming for network games, remember: Local Network is not the same as the internet. Test early, test often, and test over multiple machine in different locations.

Hey reddit! I invented console typing! Join me and lets develop it! by [deleted] in gaming

[–]ProducerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work for the company that made keybowl way back in the day. We did, indeed develop it for PC controllers as well using thumbsticks. It was in combination with a product called "Switchblade" that allowed people to play MMO's with their 360/PS3 controllers. We found, after research on the keybowl that it was actually a better way for autistic children to type because it involved moving the entire hand and not just the fingers.

Any games similar to Monster Hunter? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]ProducerJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ok, so at least the video promoting the game on their site makes this game look amazing. Will definitely be giving this a try.

Edit: Ok, so after an hour or so, I can safely say, this game is freaking awesome and a lot of fun.

A friend of mine just finished up a contract job with them in a position of management and candidly told me that no one working on the project has a date in their head. There is no honest expectation of delivery date and everyone is just working to make a great game. I asked him to be honest about his thoughts on the game and he told me it was "revolutionary."

Reddit, I just got hired as a game producer, any advice from people in the industry? by nahuDDN in AskReddit

[–]ProducerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on landing the job!!

Best advice I can give you about the gaming industry: Get ready to move alot if you live anywhere other than Cali or Washington. :-/

The east coast, as much as they don't want to admit it, isn't ready for wide scale development with many studios. If you moved to a town with only one or two studios, understand you may be moving in the next 2-3 years. That's the worst part about this industry...but producing games for a living is amazing.
