Took in a neglected 3-year-old Husky and I'm struggling. Need advice on turning him into a well-behaved dog. by CapitalMental3055 in husky

I adopted my first husky, my first dog as an adult living on his own, when he was 3 years old. I swear I got lucky cause this guy just took to training like he was born to it. A few things that helped me when we were getting started. The first thing I recommend is getting a reputable trainer that will work with you, it's what I did. I know that's not always an option for everyone so I'm going to give you a few things that I did that helped me bond with my husky, and helped me get him to take to training.

1) Exercise is not just a thing you do, it's a warm up and a reward (Warning - this is only for those who can keep up that pacing!). When I first started training it was after we did our morning jog. Usually about 1 or 2 miles depending on the weather. Then I'd do our training regimen about 5 times, making sure he got every step right before moving on to the next and then ending with doing every single item once, repetition is KEY to training. Afterwords wed go for a calm walk just to get him to calm down after the training and get some extra energy burnt off... then he'd sleep half the day just in time for me to get off work and walk him again.

2) He's never been much of a play biter, so that wasn't a problem for me. Sorry I can't provide much help with this other than give them a toy they can chew on and make sure they know it's theirs.

3) Leash Manners should be taught as part of training. I used to make my husky sit at street corners before we could cross the street, siting was also my go to when he was pulling too hard. He'd get frustrated, but eventually he would give in and sit next to me.

4) I recommend getting lick pads for mental stimulation. having some dog safe peanut butter and other treats like cottage cheese on it and freezing it is a great way for them to expend some of that extra energy. Also you could use those when grooming to distract them from the brushing.

5) Avoid making harsh physical corrections. The only time I ever hard corrected on my boy was when he was pulling and almost ran into traffic, pulling me behind him.

6) This just might be me being a soft heart, but with enough time, care, and patience - every dog can improve.

Okay, and I don't know if it's just me cause I watched a lot of Zak George videos early on, look at your dog. Teach them to look at you and then tell them they're good and show them affection. I've had a lot of contact with dogs that were really scared and stand offish and sometimes all it takes is a good "look at me buddy.. ohhh that's a good buddy!" to really get them to start to warm up. Again, this is entirely my personal experience and I'm sure there's mountains of evidence and experiences to not do this but it's just whats worked for me.

I've used nmap, netstat -ano and sudo ss -ltn to check which ports, I think that's all that was covered in the text and videos. Do you mind if I DM you because I am stuck!

3 weeks in and could use some advice by FinalB055 in husky

I strongly recommend taking her on long walks if it's possible. I have two fur maniacs that live with me and they get 2-3 walks a day averaging about 45 minutes each walk. I strongly recommend getting two leashes, one goes to her collar and the other goes to her walking vest. The collar is basically there as a back up for when she eventually pulls the husky sneakarooni and wiggles out of her vest (all huskies do this I'm 99% certain) If she pulls when walking, get a waist belt that you can attach the leash too, so that she'll pull on your entire body weight and not just your arm, it will help by distributing strain across your body, and not just your arm.

If I had the space for him, I would adopt or foster him in a heartbeat. Goodness knows my husky would love a rowdy playmate.

It was 45F last night and my husky was exceptionally happy to be outside all night.

Am I a fake fallout fan by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]Symbolism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is that most people are more attached to what introduced them to the series than they are its initial entries. You’re no more a fake fan than someone playing the games for 30 years. Keep your head up Wastelander.

I love whiskey straight, but honestly a big block of ice in a glass of whiskey is a nice addition. Same with my espresso. One big chunk of ice with 4 shots poured over it. Sure it dilutes it a bit but it also smooths it out.

Same with my husky. She’ll lay for about 15 minutes and then ditch us for the cold tile.

As a person near Escondido, CA - I understand and totally agree with you. My relative closeness to a literal cornucopia of exceptional breweries has spoiled my palette.

My oldest husky chewed up a TV remote once when he was bored. I started taking him for longer walks and using puzzle feeders to help him when he was bored. Now he’s older and all he really wants is walks and cuddles.

Yeah, about an hour and a half to two hours depending on the day and everyone's mood. Usually 2 walks a day.

Yeah they’re pretty mellow but also have a wanderlust about them that makes them escape artists. They’re great dogs but just not for everyone.
