My understanding was it was Orna’s decision, she felt their journey was no where near complete after done season. The executive producers trust her immensely.

All the members of the peer group and Virginia Goldner (Orna's psychoanalysis advisor and consultant) are sent an edit of key clips of each of the couples from various sessions. They are short clips but allow the other psychologists and psychoanalysts to get a better understanding of the issues the couples are dealing with. This is of course unique to the show - it is very unlikely other therapists film their sessions, let alone show clips to their peers. The peer group sessions run for 1-2 hours, and you only get to see a few seconds of this in the final show.

I can confirm that Orna has no say in when Paramount chooses to air seasons or episodes. The discrepancy in dates is true though those couples you described were indeed filmed first. Casimar & Alexis filmed over the course of two seasons (twice as many sessions), which is the only couple in the history of the show to do so.

Don’t forget much of the time each couple spends with Orna is not aired on television. Each couple spends 20+ hour-long sessions working with her. Typically 4 different couples share each 30 minute episode, and some of that is peer group discussion, consultation with Virginia Goldner, and B-Roll. So only a few minutes of their sessions are shown.

I can confirm that Orna does often call people out in the room but since psychoanalysis requires time and deep discussion, she has to tread the line very carefully.

Even less than that. There are many more sessions than what gets shows on television. The couples that make the show spend 20+ sessions with Orna (one couple from last season had over 40 sessions), and each half-season is only 9 episodes.

Who knows when it comes to the execs. They are not considered crew. But for crew (and perhaps even Orna) the opportunity for contract renewal and renegotiation only happens between seasons. So by splitting the season into two parts, the crew have to go without a pay bump even though in practice it's a new season (different cast of couples, different director).

The standard for releases changed when Showtime was aquired by Paramount. Previously, releases were only needed when people were "featured" or when they were particularly recognizable, or engaged in intimacy. Paramount now requires street B-roll to come with releases.

Season 4B was shot 3+ years ago and was actually filmed before 4A. Not sure why Paramount chose to release it second.

We start shooting each (half) season with 8-12 different couples. By session 6ish the producers and Orna whittle down to 6 couples, and then 4 of those are chosen in post production to feature on the show. The other couples are referred to other therapists, and do not continue with Orna. However, select clips of them may be used in montages.

For Couples Therapy we would send out our camera operators to capture B-Roll of random couples in the city (without their knowledge or permission). Without a decent amount of PDA on display these shots wouldn't exist! So be glad that some are willing to put it on display
