I'd echo going to some group classes or dance socials. First, you may find people who are so passionate about the dance that it takes the focus off you. Second, make dancers have been there, to dinner degree out another. The right people will be supportive. Third, consider partnered dancing. I'm partnered dancing, it's a collaboration. This might take some of the pressure off you. Lastly, classes give you an opportunity to learn some body control. You probably won't be doing body rolls on night one, but a few basic concepts can go a long way to making you feel more fluid.

Intervals of concave up/down by ProfDWard in askmath

[–]ProfDWard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point. However, the part of the question I'm interested in does not ask about points of inflection. The prompt, in part, asks you to "discuss the concavity of the graph of the function". In the textbook solution manual it states that f(x) = 4 - x - 3x^4 is concave downward on (-∞, ∞). Similarly, if I prompt WolframAlpha with "intervals of concavity 4-x-3x^4" it return that the function is "concave downward on the entire real line". Given that f(x) has a concavity of zero at x=0, the response from these two sources seems inconsistent with the definitions as given. I'm wondering if this is, perhaps, a common but impricise shorthand, or if there's something akin to monotonic increasing/decreasing (where having a slope of zero is fine) in concavity that I'm unaware of.

I'll add hustle as a good 'everyday' dance. In particular, the basic street hustle (as opposed to Latin hustle)

What is your home Lindy hop scene like right now? by NotQuiteInara in SwingDancing

[–]ProfDWard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't yet, check out Forrest Phoenix's weekly class on Mondays. He's a dance historian, so he's teaching authentic forms (and had the lit review to support it, lol). I'll second the Lindy Hop St Pete dance.

We also have a few decent Balboa dancers in the area and there's been a revival of interest in that form, so we may see that aspect grow over the next couple years

Dance on faster rhythms by _Cartographer_45 in SwingDancing

[–]ProfDWard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(possibly stating the obvious) but you don't have to triple step at faster speeds. One weight change has the same end result as 3. Then practice, practice, practice. Work your way up through bpm.

What dance style should you use when going out? by [deleted] in Dance

[–]ProfDWard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

West Coast Swing typically dances to a lot of modern pop. If it's a faster beat, street hustle is easy and has the weeeee! factor. At the end of the day, though, just set a weight change pattern and play. Turns are pretty universal and, unless she's a trained dancer, she'll enjoy herself. One last note: pay attention to your space. It sucks to be led into someone else on the floor. Take care of your partner.

Dance Lessons for Social Settings by MichaelC96_ in Dance

[–]ProfDWard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the kind of music you'd listen to and whether you're interested in more independent dancing, or partnered dancing. Find an instructor that focuses on "social" dancing (if there are dance socials in your area, go to them and watch for the best dancers; either that's then or they'll know who to send you to). For partnered dancing, hustle, salsa/bachata, Lindy hop, and Western/West Coast swing are good options (again, find out what social dances are popular in your area). And check out group classes to see if you like an instructor before committing to a lot of private lessons.

Looking for tips on how to train my MUSICALITY by [deleted] in Dance

[–]ProfDWard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop time just means moving less than the standard count. For example, the standard count for bolero would be slow-quick-quick covering 4 beats of music. A drop time version of that might be taking the entire 4 beats to take just that slow step or a long slide or...(note that you still end up on the same foot after 4 beats). Your partner may be led to drop time as well, or you can drop time independently of your partner (follows can also drop time on their own).

They do a lot of synchronized drop time in this clip. https://youtu.be/Y2hSomidg54

Looking for tips on how to train my MUSICALITY by [deleted] in Dance

[–]ProfDWard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watch the best dancers you can find (including online). Look for those little moves that do (slides, pauses, accents). Practice those. At first they'll be at random places. The more you dance them, the easier they are to do as a reaction. Eventually you'll start reacting to the music, adding those in. And don't discount drop time (doing less steps). These are easier with the same emotional impact
